my favorite thing i’ve learned in college is that way back in ancient china there was this poet/philosopher guy who wrote this whole pretentious poem about how enlightened he was that was like “the eight winds cannot move me” blahblahblah and he was really proud of it so he sent it to his friend who lived across the lake and then his friend sends it back and just writes “FART” (or the ancient Chinese equivalent) on it and he was SO MAD he travels across the lake to chew his friend out and when he gets there his friend says “wow. the eight winds cannot move you, but one fart sends you across the lake”
i googled this bc i desperately wanted this to be real, and guess what…it is.
the dude’s name was su dongpo (also known as su shi). his original poem went like this:
稽首天中天，
毫光照大千，
八風吹不動，
端坐紫金蓮
(Humbly bowed my head below all skies Minutest lights shine through my deepest bounds Immovable by strong winds from eight sides Upon purplish gold lotus I seated straightly by the low mound) (x)
on which his friend wrote “放屁” (fart, literally), and you know the rest.

something in parasite that really stuck with me was that scene when ke jeong was taking a bath while the family was away and ki woo popped in for a second to give her a water bottle and then later was like to his parents “she really fits in here..she doesnt look out of place at all” or something along those lines
because it was One of my first thoughts when she died at the end. she was the best at presenting herself as “classy” and “sophisticated”. she was the best at making herself palatable to the rich (something her father couldnt do). and YET she still died. because in the end it does not matter how well you can present yourself or how “classy” or “sophisticated” you can be…if you do not have money, you are still nothing
and thats why even though initially i thought it was wild that she died (and i still really wish she hadnt) when her brother got fucking BLUDGEONED in the head TWICE and still LIVED???…i interpreted it as: it was because the teenage daughter helped him. she literally picked him up and got him medical attention almost immediately, so he survived. ke jeong didnt get that. she didnt have anyone with privilege and wealth immediately looking out for her…so she died.
and thats also why even though i HATED the relationship between ki woo and the teenage daughter i get why it was included to execute that aspect of the story. he saved his own life essentially by taking advantage of her (still. jessica only child illinois chicago rights 😔)

quarantine feels kinda like that area between christmas and new years where i have no idea what day of the week it is, or if i’m supposed to be going to work.
