I tried to weigh the chinchillas on the scale today...Mei, my big girl, is HUGE at 940 grams! almost exactly two pounds. what the fuck. Suki was much more skittish about the scale, so we practiced having her put her front paws up on it to get a treat a couple of times, and I'll see if I can get her weight next week. I'm guessing she'll be between 700-800 grams, which is more typical for captive-bred females. to be clear, I am not fatshaming the rodent. no one has been able to provide me with a useful body condition scale for a ball of fluff I can barely handle. this is just to have a point of reference for the future.

weighing chinchillas is still a hilarious exercise that tests my patience. the baby scale is a bad tool for this- it turns itself off if it isn't used within one minute, so I have to sit on the floor next to it to turn it back on again. also they can both hop across it fast enough that it doesn't register their full weight, so I have to convince them to sit still on the scale for it to work. this requires treats, but any treat I can use to lure Suki will also lure Mei, and two rodents bouncing across a scale is not conducive to accuracy. My estimate for Suki from today's attempt is between 680 and 770 grams, which is perfectly useless. I think I will try again later using the smaller kitchen scale and the glass bowl they like to dust bathe in.
