taking it in good faith the choice to have widow’s bay be completely uninhabited before the original european townsfolk arrived feels like an attempt by the writers to sidestep the historically thorny relationship between indigenous cultures and western horror, which isn’t an entirely unproblematic approach but arguably better than the alternative. my prediction is that if they do acknowledge indigenous history in the area it’ll probably be something along the lines of someone from the nearest band showing up to be like “yeah we told those dumbasses not to go there because that place was evil but they went anyways and look what happened. no we can’t help you, we were smart enough not to go there in the first place”. or there’ll be the imo more interesting reveal that the island straight up didn’t exist prior to the arrival of the settlers, that their desire for a pristine terra nullius led them straight into a trap. now that’s some good colonial horror

I'm gonna hold your hand when I say this, but Keiko is NOT going to be the emotionally intelligent/mature one in the ds9 polycule. this is a woman who called of her own wedding because she panicked. not only that she made DATA tell her fiance that she was calling off the wedding. on the day of the wedding. the fun thing about the ds9 polycule is that none of them have the emotional intelligence and maturity to be in a polycule like that. embrace the chaos.

It couldn't be Nerys either because she is too scared of imposing on them. In an ideal world, Jadzia overheard all of them talking about the situation or talked with Julian about it or something and Jadzia kinda forced them together. Worf was there too but I kinda feel like he disapproves of Polygamy somehow.

how did they successfully make Ruth the most charming character in the show in the span of half an episode. “this one takes 27 minutes to steep” she has a picture of evan on her fridge. she does story club. every boss she ever had made a pass including a nun. “I loved him… but he got bit by an animal and turned into that animal” She drops the most beautiful true to life philosophy in the show so far. She has to be Unkillable (spoken with the gritted teeth of someone with 28 minutes left in the episode)

the thing widow's bay does with the final girl is super interesting to me. i don't have fully formed thoughts and i feel like i should know more about the horror genre to truly convey them, but it's just this thing where the final girl is any age and she's everywhere. the story doesn't end with her overcoming the obstacle, her life continues, and how do you continue after the impossible has happened to you? patricia is the clearest archetype, she survived as a teen only to still be the final girl in her 40s after a lifetime of dragging rumors and shame after her for having survived in the first place. she never stopped being that final girl! ruth is another one. she is elderly and survived a life of pain and loss, only to be the moral compass of the story as the final girl in the warren bloodline. everyone wanted to dismiss her because old birdies like her seem so unimportant, only to be the most important piece of all. sarah westcott was also a final girl of sorts, tasked to be warren's last wife and his downfall. she had to crawl through mud and take charge of children she didn't even know to try and save herself and a town (she didn't even belong to!) plagued by her husband's arrogance. warren's daughter frances was also a final girl. she endured the literal extermination of all her family and survived the drowning and lived long enough to have children even though the man who took care of her never treated her as a person. over and over again, women survive and endure in widow's bay. like even after her attack, lauren survived, even if not of sound mind, and became the wife in the attic asylum amidst pain and loss. but she endured, she thought of her son every second, she was trying constantly to reach out to him. there's just a lot of resilience from specifically the women in widow's bay. even the name of the island, it points at a woman who outlasted her husband. it's all final girls. we're all final girls. and we never stop being final girls.

b’elanna is actually such a great female character because so much of her character is about how she’s “short tempered” and “angry a lot” when in reality she’s not actually any notably angrier than an average mildly irritable person, especially including her future husband

man there is so much to say about how episode 3 of widows bay ramps up the horror while examining men's fear of sexual assault. first of all yes the monster of this episode is a rape monster, and it’s handled exceedingly tastefully. it’s horrifying, but never really passed a line into triggering. it’s REALLY interesting in execution.
