I maintain a doc for all my favorite short stories (and will be combing this thread for more to add, trust) but some that are pertinent here:

for sheer economy you can do no better than "Born of Man and Woman" by Richard Matheson, which is literally less than two goddamn pages

"It's a Good Life" by Jerome Bixby (famously adapted into the Twilight Zone episode of the same name)

"The Screwfly Solution" by Alice Sheldon (better known under the penname James Tiptree Jr)

"-- All You Zombies--" by Robert Heinlein (just go into this one blind, I promise you)

"Go Starless in the Night" by my personal GOAT, Roger Zelazny

And of course you can take your pick of anything written by Ray Bradbury

#Reblogging again because these are some great choices prev #Born of Man and Woman is so good and I love everything I've read by Tiptree/Sheldon so far #Recently read the Bixby having first watched the TZ episode more than a decade ago #Haven't read the Heinlein or the Zelazny yet #I need to read more of the latter; I love A Night in the Lonesome October (reading it during that month has become a yearly tradition)#And Auto-de-Fe in Dangerous Visions rocked imo. It's such a fun concept #Also looking through that doc and taking notes. Already seeing a number of incredible stories in there and more I have to check out
