I really really hate that we keep having to explain why stealing from the homeless is bad. I especially hate that I have to point out the very obvious difference between beating a man who accosted you while intoxicated vs stealing from the homeless.
Because the way fandom discussions go people will say I’m defending the former. And I’m not. I’m not defending police brutality. These are fundamentally different actions coming from different mindsets and that’s why we talk about it.
Jean, fully sober, stealing mustard from a homeless man is crucial characterization too is the thing. It’s cruel, it’s unusual, it’s a petty display of dominance that is perfectly in line with how he treats Harry for the entire game. Jean is someone who punches down on people.
And what we learn from Harry’s police brutality is that the RCM knows Harry is unfit for duty and lets him run around armed anyway. Also Burke's life as a disabled man is also not valued. Harry would’ve been in way more trouble if he beat on someone who wasn’t a crazy alcoholic. Do you see the themes, the parallels?
what’s the rush?
Parallels between Raul and Jean...both being a second-in-command of their "units", but Raul, despite being an irredeemable monster, organises tribunal to avenge the murder of his comrade and brother, ready to kill everyone for humalitaing his commander, while Jean puts a "tribunal" for his "brother in arms" in order to humaliate him or leave them to die
the post isn’t showing my responses anymore so here we go:
Jean is the one who left Harry armed and in a dangerous state in Martinaise to begin with. Inexcusable. He knows Harry is capable of violence. Jean spends the whole game in the canteen where the tribunal is being discussed. Harry actively tries to talk about the case and is ignored. It’s Jean’s own fault if he doesn’t know about the tribunal. And speaking of tribunal? The game lampshades his inexcusable inactivity after! He left Harry and Kim injured while an active shooter was on the loose.
+
None of this is 'woobification' Jean tells Harry plainly that he hates him for being disabled. He says a load of repulsive shit to him. This isn’t about him having hurt feelings because contrary to fandom belief Harry has not spent the last 6 years abusing Jean.
+
Harry IS remorseful for his actions. The literal IMPETUS for the game is that he wants to unbecome a cop and kill himself! We see his remorse and grief intimately! Something Jean doesn’t show.
+
And yeah. Jean's not our main character. He’s barely a side character. He's here to be an inflammatory bigot. The cold hand of the system who gets to arbitrarily decide if Harry lives or dies. So WHY do people spend their time defending this guy at the cost of the main character who we know very intimately? Almost like there’s a fandom wide bias against disabled addicts. To the point that they manufacture reasons for Harry to deserve being left to die!
I think if we all try really hard we can make Patricia Widow’s Bay the next top shelf blorbo
FINALLY sopping wet tragedy of a woman

THREE MONTHS. That's how long Harry’s spiral has been, after 18 years of service. and his job is ready to leave him in a ditch to die. but the worst part is how players manufacture reasons that Harry simply must deserve this treatment! no one deserves this! no one deserves social murder!
Actually, you know what I think I’ve been too nice to Jean. He doesn’t just sit on his ass doing nothing while a pack of first world mercenaries prepare to descend on the most vulnerable district in the city. He’s also surveilling Harry and arguing with the precinct's captain's to have his coworker fired. He’s using the volatile situation in Martinaise for petty workplace maneuvering. And that’s worse than just being a lazy freak.
It takes an opportunistic monster to do that. I should give credit where credit is due.
@pentimint
it makes him so much more of an interesting character like in defanging him people reduce him to Ashes they reduce him to Nothing
exactly like, the character that is fanon Jean is so…it’s a character from an average boring copaganda procedural, he has no place in Elysium, no cohesion with the narrative and themes, he’s just a woobie who exists to be abused for the most boring yaoi dreck imaginable
If Jean ever actually weally weally cawed about Harry that’s worse, the way he treats him is much worse.
in what fucking universe does loving someone excuse murdering them for having the audacity to be a disabled addict
Once you set out to excuse the actions of someone who is doing something fundamentally inexcusable you just show your ass you slip on the ground and your pants fall down, and your entire ass is out. And no one wants to see this.
In what world does the man screaming degradations at a disabled person need defending? In what world is this not the dominant way of life for every disabled person? He doesn’t need you batting for his honor. He steals mustard from the homeless.

you can kind of tell when a story didn’t originally have Hastings in it because he’ll just kind of disappear for a bit but his presence is natural and easygoing it doesn’t really feel immersion breaking
trying to describe poirot to my friend at trivia night: "if youve seen a detective who looks like this, thats him"
Why is it kind of cute that Hastings offers to get it for Poirot even though Poirot is at least wearing some kind of gloves that would protect his hands better from the thorns.
