after watching with @renmorris a playthrough of Directive 8020 and just being astonished about how it failed so spectacularly at presenting a sci-fi story—let alone a cohesive narrative in the first place—i’m also thinking back to some of the other games in the anthology and wondering like… why in the world would they bring on Lashana Lynch, an internationally renowned and very skilled actor, and give her character virtually nothing to do?? and like no shade to Ashley Tisdale, also a very skilled and renowned actor, i loved her in House of Ashes, but the writers for that game actually gave her character something to do in that game. she was this badass take-no-shit figure, she’s cheating on her husband, she’s shooting things, she demonstrates character depth whether you choose to change her character traits through making all those dialogue choices in the game, and there’s a way to play that game where she falls off a cliff, seemingly to her death, but survives and manages to fight her way out, and she can SURVIVE after all of that.

I really like sci-fi stories where people have to go off and terraform a planet, or figure out how to rebuild civilization after some disaster, or ideally both. "The last ark-ship leaving Earth right before it becomes uninhabitable" sort of deal. But lately I've been coming around to this same idea, that it will always be more practical to try to save Earth than to try to start over elsewhere.
