What a funny way to say “cops blew up neighborhood”
It’s been really hilarious to watch the LAPD try to dodge any responsibility for this while the media tries desperately to help them by publishing the most confusing fucking headlines but what really happened is that the cops found and confiscated thousands of pounds of “illegal” fireworks in LA and then decided to take 10 pounds of that, call the press, and make a show of using their new expensive toy, the “total containment” truck that is supposed to be able to take explosions of up to 15 pounds.
So they took the 10 pounds of explosives and their toy truck to a poor Black neighborhood, got reporters there, stuck the explosives inside, and set them off intentionally instead of just defusing them like they did with the other 4,990 pounds of fireworks.
For some reason, likely because something went wrong with their truck which I bet cost the city a shit ton of money, the containment completely failed and the explosion destroyed cars, homes, and injured 17-19 people (I’ve seen different reports with different numbers), a couple of whom were in critical condition but it sounds like everyone survived.
The LAPD then had the audacity to tweet that they didn’t know what caused the explosion when it was them who caused the explosion, intentionally, and we know because they called the media so that everybody could see them do it.
In summary, the LAPD wanted to show off/justify their ridiculous budget but their expensive toy was a dud and so they ended up bombing a poor Black neighborhood (because they would never risk this in a white neighborhood) and don’t want to admit it.
This is an absolute religious experience that I was not prepared for
Whoever did the caps for this deserves an award
Can never not reblog this, a Scottish national treasure 😂
Alison was such a popular name in medieval England that authors would name women characters Alison to indicate that she was supposed to be a very normal kind of person
People in northern England in medieval times used to refer to themselves as I while people from the south referred to themselves as ich so you can tell when a northern character is imitating a southern accent when they start saying “ich will” instead of “I will” or vice versa
Friars/traveling priests these days are remembered as very holy figures. Not necessarily so in medieval times! They had a reputation for going from town to town and boinking random unmarried women.
Yes beer was given to children but the beer that was given to children or consumed at most meals was really low in alcohol content. Think modern day kombucha. High alcohol stuff was for adults.
Medieval peasants grew a lot of stuff in personal gardens like onions, garlic, and rosemary so even though they were limited in what they were allowed to hunt or grow legally they probably had some very tasty meals.
In the very early middle ages even the nobility were illiterate. Pretty much only monks knew how to read and write. William the conqueror? Was most likely illiterate.
I’m losing my mind, please tell us more
After the Normans conquered England and nobility started to learn how to read, there’s a period between about 1066 and 1200-ish where all “English” literature in the sense that it was from England, was written in French. When things were written in English again it had already merged with French somewhat so what happened in between Old English and Middle English? idk.
These days the stereotype is that men are very horny and women are reserved and aren’t as concerned with sex. For most of European history that stereotype was actually reversed! It was still the same amount of sexist though.
People in the British isles have been continuously making some version of oat cakes since at least the time of the Roman conquest. The definition of an oat cake though, varies from region to region even today. In some regions they are similar to oatmeal cookies while in other regions they are more like pancakes.
Medieval historians weren’t terribly concerned with accuracy. More likely they were concerned with entertainment. So in order to rid themselves of criticism when they were found out for making stuff up they often cite other people or books that may or may not exist or say that they heard it from this other guy so it’s not them making stuff up oh no it was that other guy. So that’s why we often have to depend on archeology to understand what actually happened and medieval “historical” texts are more often the study of literary experts rather than historians.
More facts please
Bloodletting was so popular as a medical treatment in medieval times that they sometimes treated wounds with bloodletting. Also, bloodletting and most cutting of humans for medical purposes in general including surgery was not performed by doctors. It was performed by barbers.
Medieval English literature from about Beowulf onward often includes a lot of long passages about putting on armor. This was actually quite fun and entertaining for the intended audience of these stories, who were usually warriors and knights who wanted to know what kind of cool armor their favorite legendary hero was wearing.
i love these can we have more?
In medieval literature, a person having a gap in their teeth is shorthand for “this person has a lot of sex”
I love these lil factoids. Idk how you know this but I feel educated and I’ve lived in the U.K. my entire life. History would’ve been way more interesting if we learnt this.
I took an English Medieval Literature class to cap off my English degree and the class itself was full of weird facts because literary history is odd but that also sent me down a massive medieval Britain related rabbithole in my freetime because uh it was weird, y'all.

This is humanity put to good use. Screw all the stuff that’s happening these days, this is basically the only reason I like us stupid ape people. Little things like this, designed to keep us all happy and busy
i love this!!!
Now this is good design. Pay attention, tech companies - it’s not about looking shiny, it’s about understanding the end user’s needs and working with them.
So many wonderful ideas ❤️⭐️
Always a reblog for me. I don’t care how many times I see it.
Holy shit dude
This sounds like... really important? What the FUCK Disney??
They are just straight up not paying loyalties! "Disney’s argument is that they have purchased the rights but not the obligations of the contract."
This is seriously dangerous to creators
Read the letter from Alan Dean Foster:
Dear Mickey,
We have a lot in common, you and I. We share a birthday: November 18. My dad’s nickname was Mickey. There’s more.
When you purchased Lucasfilm you acquired the rights to some books I wrote. STAR WARS, the novelization of the very first film. SPLINTER OF THE MIND’S EYE, the first sequel novel. You owe me royalties on these books. You stopped paying them.
When you purchased 20th Century Fox, you eventually acquired the rights to other books I had written. The novelizations of ALIEN, ALIENS, and ALIEN 3. You’ve never paid royalties on any of these, or even issued royalty statements for them.
All these books are all still very much in print. They still earn money. For you. When one company buys another, they acquire its liabilities as well as its assets. You’re certainly reaping the benefits of the assets. I’d very much like my miniscule (though it’s not small to me) share.
You want me to sign an NDA (Non-disclosure agreement) before even talking. I’ve signed a lot of NDAs in my 50-year career. Never once did anyone ever ask me to sign one prior to negotiations. For the obvious reason that once you sign, you can no longer talk about the matter at hand. Every one of my representatives in this matter, with many, many decades of experience in such business, echo my bewilderment.
You continue to ignore requests from my agents. You continue to ignore queries from SFWA, the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America. You continue to ignore my legal representatives. I know this is what gargantuan corporations often do. Ignore requests and inquiries hoping the petitioner will simply go away. Or possibly die. But I’m still here, and I am still entitled to what you owe me. Including not to be ignored, just because I’m only one lone writer. How many other writers and artists out there are you similarly ignoring?
My wife has serious medical issues and in 2016 I was diagnosed with an advanced form of cancer. We could use the money. Not charity: just what I’m owed. I’ve always loved Disney. The films, the parks, growing up with the Disneyland TV show. I don’t think Unca Walt would approve of how you are currently treating me. Maybe someone in the right position just hasn’t received the word, though after all these months of ignored requests and queries, that’s hard to countenance. Or as a guy named Bob Iger said….
“The way you do anything is the way you do everything.”
I’m not feeling it.
Alan Dean Foster
SIGNAL.
BOOST.
Because you know if Disney gets away with not paying creators, everyone else will want to see if they can get away with it.
First of all, yes to all of this.
But something I think should be highlighted is the difference between the Disney franchise model, and a lot of previous franchise models, and why the Disney model sucks.
If you, say, write an original novel, and it gets published in a traditional publishing house, they will give you a check up front and also pay you royalties, that is, a percentage of the profits the book makes. (If you’re asking “why don’t you get ALL the profit, if you’re the sole author?” the answer is that the editors, typesetters, printers, cover artist, advertisers, and bookstores need to get paid, too; they aren’t producing and selling your book out of the goodness of their heart.) If the book is a flop, you’ll get nothing but the up-front check; if it’s a smash hit that sells a lot really quickly and then gets forgotten about, you’ll get a lot of money in the first year and not much thereafter; if it becomes a classic or perennial favorite you will have a small but steady stream of revenue trickling in for years.
When Disney hires someone to create something for a franchise they own, they do not pay royalties. They never have, to the best of my knowledge. The contract is a strict one off, work-for-hire. You create something to their specifications, they give you a check, and off you go. If the thing you created is the greatest of its kind ever, you don’t get royalties. Disney can profit for the next century, but you don’t get anything. This is legal, because when you signed the contract you agreed to it--you got all your money up front, not tied to the success or failure of your creation. If your creation is a failure, this is a really good deal, because you’ll make more money. If your creation does medium-well, it’s a toss-up, because you might have made more money with royalties, but you might not; and the accounting and business angle is simpler if you get a lump sum vs. dribs and drabs trickling in for the next couple of years. But if your work is a great success ... then not getting royalties for it means the contract was a really terrible deal for you and a great deal for Disney.
But the thing is, Disney has spent the last several years buying up franchises from other people and corporations. And some of those franchises did pay royalties, at least for some authors. See, especially back in the 70s through the 90s, if you wanted a big-name author to write a novelization or tie-in (and thus have a better chance of that book selling well), offering royalties was how you did it. Because sure, there were a lot of mid-list or bottom-list or newbie authors who would write work-for-hire (i.e. payment up front but no royalties) just because they needed the cash. For a newbie or bottom-list or mid-list author, they might actually make more money doing work-for-hire for a major franchise than they would writing their own original stuff. You churn out a novel to their specifications, you take your check, pay your bills, and then go back to writing the stuff you actually want to write. Which is why so many novelizations and tie-ins are mediocre at best. But a major author (who might do a better job, and who would attract readers who otherwise don’t bother with tie-ins and novelizations) wouldn’t take a contract like that because they’d make more money on their own stuff where they would get royalties.
Alan Dean Foster was one of the leading SF/F authors of the late 20th Century. And he had a positive talent for writing tie-ins and novelizations and making them really good. Which is why he got good contracts with royalties to write those books instead of them being work-for-hire, and also why many of those books are still in print and still selling steadily, today, literally 40 years later, decades after most of the other tie-ins and novelizations of that era are out of print.
So even after snaffling up all these other franchises, there probably aren’t too many authors who wrote books that Disney now owns the rights to who are due royalties. And most of the books Disney now owns where the authors are due royalties ... it probably doesn’t matter much because the books are old enough that they haven’t sold many copies in the last decade or so, so it’s a moot point.
I bet that what happened was that Disney doesn’t have anyone on staff who actually handles figuring out who is owed royalties and how much, because ... they’ve never had to deal with royalties because they do everything work-for-hire. So then Alan Dean Foster, one of the few people who a) wrote novels that Disney now owns the rights to, b) is entitled to royalties on them, and c) those novels actually sell enough on a regular basis to generate royalties, starts asking why he’s not getting his quarterly check. And Disney is like, who does this dude think he is, why should we pay him for books that he wrote forty years ago, he’s already been paid, we own the books now fair and square.
Except that’s not what the contract says. And now they’re trying to wiggle out of it.
I hope they get laughed out of court and have to pay not only the royalties but any legal bills Foster may have.
it would take 2.3 million years for Jeff Bezos to earn his $183.3b net worth working 24 hours a day at New Mexico’s $9/hr minimum wage.
That’s 11.5 times longer than the human race has existed.
Not long enough.
What if we gave it a twist? Rather than earning that amount of money, what if it was to save that amount while still paying bills and feeding himself?
And since it IS hell, his car starts making a Noise about once a month.
LMFAO
She is Marzieh, one of the strongest women I have ever met. I took this photo a while ago, in Iran and today, after having her consent, I decided to post it. Marzieh was driving in Isfahan, Iran, six years ago, when two men on a motorcycle came close to her car. One of them threw acid on her face and then they ran away. Police never caught them, although the street was surveyed by video cameras. There were a few other similar cases in Isfahan, in the same year, and the perpetrators have never been caught. All these horrible acts were directed towards women who were not wearing conservative outfits. Many Iranians believe that these attacks were made in complicity with different authorities to discourage women from adopting a more liberal way of dressing. But both national and local authorities denied any involvement. Today Marzieh is trying to raise awareness about these terrible attacks and advocates for the ban of acid sales. Although she started to cry when she remembered that horrible day, she wanted to tell me the whole story. Then she smiled again. It was the smile of a powerful woman, who found the strength and courage to overcome the suffering and to fight for her cause every single day, so this would not happen again to other women. Dear Marzieh, incredible women like you are the reason I’m doing this project. Thank you so much for showing me the purest form of beauty.
Consent is all the above!

“I heard the rumor from a random girl in school. She told me that my boyfriend had gotten another girl pregnant. He’d cheated on me before, so I assumed it was true. But for awhile he denied everything. Then he shifted to blaming the girl. Her name was Stacie. And as the story often goes, I turned all my hatred and hurt toward her. We literally never spoke. And my boyfriend would talk her down every chance he got. I’d occasionally see her when she dropped the baby off at the house. I’d feel such hatred every time the doorbell would ring. She was always so well put-together. There was this unapproachable air about her. Like she was better than everyone else. Worst of all, she had this connection with my boyfriend that I didn’t have. The connection of a child. And that was thrown in my face every time she came to the door. My jealousy created a monster inside of me. I withdrew from everyone. Then one year later I got pregnant myself. I didn’t feel any excitement. Instead there was a moment of clarity. I couldn’t raise a child with this man. He was a pathological liar. For weeks I went back-and-forth. Do I get an abortion? Do I give the child up for adoption? Then one day I made the decision to become a single mother. I remember being so scared. And the first person I thought of was Stacie. It was like: ‘My God, I’ve vilified this woman for so long. And now I’m her. And she is me.’ I picked up my phone and sent her a text. I apologized for everything. And I asked for her support. That was eleven years ago. But we still love to joke about how our horrible taste in men when we were young brought us together. Stacie is my best friend in the world. She’s my person. Our daughters know each other as sisters. At times she’s been my roommate, my biggest confidant, and my maid of honor. Sometimes I think back to those early days, watching her walk up the driveway. I think about all the hatred I would feel. And now it’s her hugs that I need when I’m feeling upset. There have been some bad episodes in my life. But every time I’m down, she shows up. The doorbell will ring on a random Tuesday. At 4 PM. And when I open up the door, there she is. And she’ll give me the biggest hug.”

He was an activist who inspired millions to fight for their rights. He knew what was wrong with our country and risked his life to help his people achieve equality. In the society where black were treated like animal he did everything possible to change this. His brave soul, his will and courage changed the history of America , changed the people. He made us believe we can win this war. He payed for it with his life. He will always be remembered.
Respecting his memory also means acknowledging that his fight is far from over, black people are facing the same issues that ha birth to the Black Panthers, and that the FBI is basically trying to launch COINTELPRO 2.0 against BLM and other black activists. Hampton should be more than a history lesson, he should be a rallying point.
For now, tell the world

Angry post.
“All Lives Matter” is a purely reactionary statement that stands for nothing, does nothing, sacrifices nothing, and is only born out of spite. If “All Lives Mattered,” they would’ve marched for two white men Tony Timpa and Daniel Shaver who were brutally slain by officers. Black Lives Matter protested for them instead.
“All Lives Matter” continues to lift images of rioting, a fraction of protesters, to further an agenda but literally don’t care about the affected small business owners or know their names. Black Lives Matter movement has *constantly* donated or posted links for small businesses.
I would have even half an ounce of respect for “All Lives Matter” if they were a movement that did a single thing. The only thing they’ve ever lifted is a finger over the keyboard for absolute nonsense and vitriol against grieving people. As a chaplain and human being, no thanks.
