one of my fav things ab nightvale that i completely forgot ab until my relisten is how cecil starts to humanize carlos more as they actually like date. it stops being "perfect carlos" and it's more "perfectly imperfect carlos". he starts talking about carlos' flaws (not in a mean way ofc). i just think it's sweet that he kinda stops putting him on a pedestal when they're actually dating

wonder if there was ever a moment where cecil, year one, was absolutely exhausted of begging for a crumb of attention from someone that was not interested. on the good days, he had hope, he new that Carlos’ hesitancy and awkwardness was his shyness and not a lack of interest, but on the bad ones? cecil sitting alone in his booth, post show, wondering if he’d ever find a meaningful relationship that he didn’t have to beg for. where he felt pursued instead. where he is wanted and was told hes wanted.
how used did cecil become to watching life pass him by instead of actually participating in it? how used did he become to never being wanted or chosen? the sting to me of DOW (before we got the full story) was always that it seemed as if carlos was moving on and replacing cecil out of convenience without ever telling him. His interests had shifted, he was far away, and cecil was left alone wondering what he could have done differently to keep carlos wanting him.
and then, that old familiar feeling of yearning for things that were never really his came back. the familiar feeling that he was only ever meant and made to be an observer. never meant to have a life

Fun fact when I first started listening to wtnv I did not realize that Cecil talking about Carlos so nicely was him expressing his love. I had so much faith in Cecil’s ability to report on the news of night vale instead of his love life that I just went “wow ALL of night vale must really love Carlos The Scientist” and their date was like whiplash to me.

cecil and carlos being soulmates to an obnoxious degree is such a funny headcanon for me. like the corniest tropes imaginable. they have matching birthmarks. cecil is left handed and carlos is right handed so they can hold hands but still have their dominant hand. their hands also fit suspiciously well together. they can both recall dreams featuring the other years before carlos came to night vale. perfect height to rest their head on the others shoulder. can both carry each other bridal style. most cliche couple ever
