August is dedicated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary
June is widely known among Catholics as the Month of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, one of the Church's most beloved devotions. But did you know that every month of the year is dedicated to a particular devotion? Each one invites us to contemplate a different mystery of our faith and grow closer to Our Lord, Our Lady, and the saints through the rich spiritual traditions of the Church.
Throughout the month of August, the Catholic Church invites the faithful to honor the Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This devotion draws us to contemplate the pure and loving heart of Our Lady, wholly united to the Sacred Heart of her Son. Mary's Immaculate Heart is a model of perfect faith, humility, obedience, and charity. By entrusting ourselves to her maternal care and striving to imitate her virtues, we are led ever closer to Jesus Christ, whose will she embraced with complete love and fidelity.
♡ How did this devotion begin?
Devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary has its roots in Sacred Scripture, where the Gospel tells us that Mary "kept all these things, pondering them in her heart" (Luke 2:19), revealing her profound love for God and her complete union with His divine will.
Over the centuries, saints such as St. John Eudes greatly promoted devotion to the Hearts of Jesus and Mary, encouraging the faithful to honor the virtues and interior life of the Blessed Virgin.
This devotion became especially widespread after the apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima in 1917. There, the Blessed Virgin repeatedly called for prayer, penance, and conversion, asking for devotion to her Immaculate Heart as a means of leading souls to God and obtaining peace for the world. She later requested the practice of the Five First Saturdays Devotion in reparation for the sins committed against her Immaculate Heart.
Today, devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary remains a cherished tradition in the Church, reminding us that the surest path to Jesus is through His Blessed Mother, whose heart was perfectly conformed to His.
