But they choose to give up on God's gifts. They using their free will to cause harm to others.
They are still made in the image of God

voice of someone who just finished reading a book that was published 70 years ago: does anyone ever think about the parallels between cathy and abra in east of eden. does anyone talk about abra in a way that's not just reducing her to a 'good wife good woman' role. can we talk about the women in a way that's more nuanced than either "cathy evil" or "john steinbeck was a misogynist and that's why he made cathy evil"
it is with a clenched fist shaking in the direction of the nearest #litbro that I must say that east of eden is indeed a heater. kinda outselling all the bible fanfic that's been published; hemingway could never, dante is shaking, milton only good as inspo for lucifer paintings. the first 8 chapters went absolutely bonkers omg, "a time splashed with interest, wounded with tragedy, crevassed with joy --- that's the time that seems long in the memory. and this is right when you think about it. eventlessness has no posts to drape duration on. from nothing to nothing is no time at all" just being some fadeaway sentences is wild and there's like 12 of them per chapter...
anyone else thinking about charles trask hiring a woman to clean his house top to bottom in anticipation of adam trask returning home from the army and charles himself sleeping in the shed to "keep the house clean for adam" or just me and john steinbeck
so does anyone feel violently nauseous during that scene where alice is cleaning adam up after charles nearly beats him to death and even though she's a woman of few words she's telling him about how charles isn't that bad of a kid and he leaves her little gifts everywhere secretly for her to find even though it's been adam the entire time.

I've been reading East of Eden and I really fuck with this passage. For context, the character is talking about an old horse he has:
"I think that’s why I picked him when he was a colt. Do you know I paid two dollars for him thirty-three years ago? Everything was wrong with him, hoofs like flapjacks, a hock so thick and short and straight there seems no joint at all. He’s hammerheaded and swaybacked. He has a pinched chest and a big behind. He has an iron mouth and he still fights the crupper. With a saddle he feels as though you were riding a sled over a gravel pit. He can’t trot and he stumbles over his feet when he walks. I have never in thirty-three years found one good thing about him. He even has an ugly disposition. He is selfish and quarrel-some and mean and disobedient. To this day I don’t dare walk behind him because he will surely take a kick at me. When I feed him mash he tries to bite my hand. And I love him."
We've been lovingly shitting on our pets just always forever it's so awesome.
"'Dear Lord', he said, 'let me be like Aron. Don't make me mean. I don't want to be. If you will let everybody like me, why, I'll give you anything in the world and if I haven't got it, why, I'll go for to get it. I don't want to be lonely. For Jesus' sake, Amen.' [...] And in his mind he cried, 'Don't let me be mean.'"
East of Eden, John Steinbeck
