hey just a heads up/warning for those of you who don’t do well dealing with the heavy subjects or videos portraying violent acts, sandyhook promise has a new gun violence school shooting PSA that is probably going to be going viral and is slated to play on television and in AMC movie theaters and it’s pretty heavy, especially at the end. I know it’s a topic that needs to be discussed but it’s not a video that everyone will be able to watch, so just a warning for those of you that might not be able to handle it.

I am also a victim of abuse, so if you could understand that it would be great.

I have learnt to minimise and help myself by learning that my abuser won’t change. Because he hasn’t since I was born. I’m now 19 years old and still he acts in exactly the same way he did when I was 2.

Yes, abusers can change, and yes some people develop into better and more fruitful versions of themselves, but for others it’s a fact of life that the abusive behaviour is ingrained in their DNA.

For an abuser to change, they have to WANT to change, and they have to understand what their actions have done and what the consequences of them are. They have to see what damage they have caused and think differently to every time they’ve caused that damage before.

Some abusive partners promise they will change as a way of manipulation. Some show remorse after the abuse happens, but again to break the cycle, the have to actually want to better themselves.

Maybe your abuser has changed, and for that I am glad that either you managed to get out of the situation and let them grow, or maybe they changed because they saw they hurt you. But mine hasn’t, and millions of others haven’t.

It’s not “[out of] contact with reality” to think an abuser won’t change, it’s a truth that many victims have to face every day.

So I am truly glad your abuser changed, but many don’t. And that is reality.
