A poem for you all this Sunday, inspired by a quote from the American poet Robert Lowell (1917-1977). I'm tired and depressed, but I'm doing my best not to succumb to the siren song of nihilism. Anyway, I hope you like it.
I TRY we are all here for such a short time, we might as well be good to one another --Robert Lowell, βNew Yorkβ I try in this mayfly existence.
I try to give of myself what I can, always in the knowledge that it is not enough, that it will never be enough.
If I gave of my own flesh, whittled myself to the very bone, the wars would still be fought, the sick would still crowd hospitals, the Earth would still burn.
So why not give up?
Because one day I will die. Lying in the grave I may hear what they say of me.
And only if I am not condemned will I rest easy.
