Way too many parents need to learn the difference between “a child being disrespectful” and “a human person expressing an opinion that differs from theirs”

I really like this technique because it addresses the OPs comment but recognizes that the two can coexist. The problem is often the child is expressing their opinion in a rude or disrespectful way. And as humans we automatically become adverse to opinions we feel are aggressive toward us.

Downvoted on a story on HF, what even is this life we lead. I wonder what upset them. futa? breeding? yuri?

Whenever I see downvotes on porn / primarily nsfw sites, I like to imagine (for example) an 80-year-old nun trying to look up the words to some obscure prayer (or whatever nuns look up on the internet) and getting catastrophically lost, and then being so overcome with shock that they have to go around watching videos so they can downvote them (because downvoting without watching first would be impolite and dishonest).  And then the head nun comes in looking for a spare rosary polisher (or whatever random object nuns have laying around their nun houses), and halfway through asking notices the screen and shrieks in horror / repressed sexuality, and then after many hilariously awkward developments the computer is burned at the stake, the room exorcised and the entire convent marched off to confession.  

Also, remember to vote in local elections! Keep track of when they are, the candidates, and make sure you stay informed on local and state politics. We have to show up in 2018, and at every. Single. Thing.

I dont like adding things but this needs to be said: DO NOT ASSUME THAT THERE WILL BE A HIGH DEMOCRATIC TURNOUT. Do not think that “oh EVERYONE else will show up to vote, I dont have to” Do not do that. Because trust me you wouldn’t be the only person thinking that. Now, if everyone assumes it’ll be a high turn out so they dont go, then nobody goes. Assume always that your vote will be the tipping point, assume that your vote is necessary and needed (because guess what: it absolutely is). Go vote. Keep track of the dates. And just go do it.

Your social justice should be founded on love for others, not on a desire to be the most visibly enlightened.

Addendum: If the only real & effective social justice you can muster runs on other people’s praise, that’s still ok.  We’d like people to do good things out of pure altruism (mostly because it makes a better story, and we are storytelling chimpanzees), but a genuinely good deed is still a net positive no matter what the reasons behind it.  Our enemies in this fight are the assholes who want to kill people for playing with the wrong combination of sex organs, or having the wrong skin color, or wearing the wrong clothes, or eating the wrong food, or voting for the wrong politician, or worshipping the wrong set of fairy-tale-sky-wizard-superheroes, or some other petty, pointless non-issue, and the world is filthy with them.  If the only way you can bring yourself to fight those assholes is by having other people praise you for doing it, then so be it.  People who criticize activism as “performative” are both missing the point and hurting their cause.  

Also, just in case you’re distinguishing yourself, Superman also hates the KKK. 

superman was created by two jewish men. like i feel that’s an important thing missing from this post. there’s a lot of analysis out there that showcases superman exploring judaic themes. nazi newspapers denounced superman and his creators. jack kirby and joe simon (captain america), bob kane (batman), stan lee (god, how do you boil him down to one iconic creation?), joe schuster and jerry siegel (superman), will eisner (the spirit) — all were jewish. and like i’ll delete this comment if i’m swerving out of my lane as someone who isn’t jewish, but i feel like it’s important to note that mainstream comics were created by jewish people and that “superman hates nazis” is not something to say without giving historical context. superman isn’t just some nazi-fighting ally fantasy from people who probably wouldn’t actually call out antisemitism — let alone fight it — but who want to look like they’re actually doing something with empty threats; superman is, by existing and thriving, actively fighting antisemetic ideas and white supremacy. he is one of the most important pop culture characters in the world and his origins are judaic, and i think it’s a great disservice to not inform people about this so they don’t get to think they’re equal to superman when they reblog a post saying “punch nazis” but never bother to actually do or say anything when they’re confronted with white supremacy and antisemitism and the influences of both in their lives. i don’t want to talk over jewish people, so i’ll totally delete this comment if it seems like i am. but i just wanted to take a moment to rant because i love comics and i see people excluding the origins of this industry and its creators so often in the community.
