Reblog to save a duck
Quack quack
Itâs getting to be that time of year where more people are going outside to parks and stuff so i thought it would a good idea to reblog this again
Once I was feeding some ducks from a bag of birdseed I brought with me, and this woman next to me looked so confused and asked what I was feeding them
When I said it was birdseed she just went âoh- can they actually eat that? Is that safe?â
I didnt know how to respond like, at all, so I just pointed at the duck and said âbirdâ
She then had a look on her face like a new groove was just forcibly carved in her brain and said softly âoh my fucking godâ
"it's all in your head" correct! unfortunately I am also in there

âMean girls all grow up to be nurses!â
âMean girls all go into social work!â
âThe mean girl to teacher pipeline!â
Yâall, these are just pink collar jobs. The reason you think thereâs so many âmean girlsâ in these fields is because theyâre all like 97% women. Of course some of them are gonna be assholes. Thereâs assholes everywhere.
We get it. Your job isnât like other girlsâ jobs. Itâs a cool job.
itâs true that there are some incredibly cruel people in all of these professions.
itâs also true that they all suffer from chronic underpayment, overwork, lack of institutional support, and insane bureaucratic demands that would make them fail the people in their care all the time even if every single one was a saint.
Thatâs absolutely missing the point.
While those are all âhelperâ professions and they very much are pink collar (and are underpaid, thatâs not an incompatible idea), theyâre also ones that involve power over vulnerable peopleâs lives. (And Iâve only encountered it as a comparison to, say, male bullies becoming cops, itâs not like men arenât being mentioned here.)
Secretaries/administrative assistants arenât on that list for a reason. Flight attendants arenât on that list. Housecleaners arenât on that list. Receptionists. Customer service representatives. Dental hygienists. The people who style hair or do nails. Thatâs not a list of pink collar jobs. Itâs specifically (pink collar) positions where if you want to abuse people youâre relatively likely to get away with it.
It can both be true that ânurses who care for disabled people need better payâ and ânurses who care for disabled people have a lot of opportunities to abuse their power and thatâs something worth talking about.â
Women arenât immune from treating people badly because theyâre women, or because women are underpaid. Theyâre sure not immune from specifically seeking out jobs that will allow them to be cruel without any consequences to them, if they get personal satisfaction out of being cruel.
You are trying to shut down a conversation about abuse.
Shitty people are attracted to positions of power. That includes working class women!
There have been a lot of studies about hazing and abuse in nursing communities and even murder!
My mother is a nurse, her co-workers sit around laughing about the people who fall out of their wheel chairs, about the nurses who do cry when someone dies, my mother has ignored patients crying out in pain in order to drink her coffee.
My mother has intentionally let elderly patients at her nursing home die. She has abused them and she has laughed about it. She has left people suffering and has caused that suffering.
Nurses are underpaid and they are disrespected as medical professionals who arenât a doctor. Thatâs true and we should talk about that, but we can not ignore the fact that violent women seek out these jobs with God Complexes and the intent to do harm.
Sure, that harm might be because they are bitter, over-worked, and disrespected. None the less, it is no different than when a male doctor causes purposeful harm to his patient.
Nurses contribute to eugenics, to patient abuse, elder abuse, and yeah even child abuse (my mother was proficient in all of them!)
Here are some important articles to read:
Nurses Eat Their Young An article about hazing and bullying among nurses. The title comes from a common saying in medical circles, the first time I heard it, it was in reference to my motherâs best friend who had poured coffee over the hands of a new nurse who had reported another nurse to a superior for abusing a patient.
Bullying in Nursing â Why The Hazing is Getting Worse A brief article on forms of hazing.
Nurse hazing: a costly reality
Why do nurses abuse patients? Reflections from South African obstetric services
Patientsâ lives being left at mercy of abusive nurses
Every single one of these articles, with exception of the last â which is guardian article â is a professionally published medical article.
Itâs the same with teachers. Like nurses, teachers are underpaid, overworked, disrespected, and overall treated like shit in the USA, and a lot of people do look down on teaching for being a âfeminineâ job. Like nurses, a lot of teachers get into the work out of a true passion for it, and a desire to help people, and a lot of them start out enthusiastic and really believing in the work, only to have their joy sapped away by years of being treated terribly.
But.
Teachers also have a lot of power over the children under their care, and some teachers are extremely eager to abuse that power. Some from the start, and some I think get that way when they grow disillusioned and cynical and start taking it out on the students - because, y'know, canât take it out on the people that pay you. If you are the sort of person who would want to abuse a child, teaching would be an attractive career path. Even if you donât want to abuse children specifically, if youâre the sort of person who wants control over other people and freedom from consequences if that control is abused (the system lets things fall through the cracks all the time! victims who likely wonât speak up or be believed if they do! a societal belief that no one who goes into your profession could possibly be a bad person!), teaching is attractive for many of the same reasons nursing is.
A lot of the mean girls who grow up to be nurses and teachers wouldâve grown up to be cops if they were male. Their gender likely does play a role in WHICH position of power they choose - but it comes down to the same reason.

I know I sound like your mom but you kids need to stop fucking vaping
1) Vaping is confirmed to cause cancer. Vaping coats the lungs with toxic substances, such as heavy metals and benzene, which are known to cause cancer
2) Many vapes contain diacetyl, which, when inhaled causes popcorn lung, or scarring of the lung
3) Ultrafine particles, when being inhaled, can be lodged in the trachea (not good!)
4) Ultrafine particles can also constrict the arteries in the lungs potentially causing A HEART ATTACK
5) Vaping is relatively new. Not much studies have been done in comparison to tobacco. Plus, the vaping companies are powerful people. There is a large chance that they are purposely downplaying and even burying any evidence that vaping is harmful - just like the tobacco companies before them. They do not care about you, or your health, or the truth. They only care for money
Also STOP VAPING INDOORS AROUND OTHER PEOPLE. Holy shit, if you're gonna wreck your lungs at least give me the option not to wreck mine.
Itâs such an issue that the MTA had to run a campaign about it
yeah okay ill reblog that

'Burn' - an Ascended Astarion x Tav animation
I just have to share this again. A beautiful, devastating animation set to the song 'Burn' from the Hamilton musical, exploring spawn Tav and Ascended Astarion's relationship sometime after BG3. I bawl my eyes out every. single. time. And I love it.
this movie is so fucking creepy jesus fuck
Itâs by Tim Burton, what did you honestly expect?
Actually, itâs Henry Selick, who was the director of The Nightmare Before Christmas. The book was written by Neil Gaiman, though, and is farâŚfarâŚ.worse.
Sorry, Iâm about to geek the hell out.
The movie is captivating, but the book is twenty kinds of terrifying, even now, ten years after I first read it. As disturbing as the movie may have been to some, the things Selick added really serve to cushion just how horrific the story really is.
First of all, the character of Wybie does not exist in the book. Coraline is facing all of this nearly alone, with her only help coming from the sly comments of the cat, a warning from the circus mice, and the stone given to her by her neighbor, presented with no comment but that it âmakes the unseen seen.â
Second, the Other Parents are never quite as warm (and, dare I say, normal) as they are in the gifs above. Theyâre described as having paper-white skin and the Other Motherâs hair is said to move on its own, and her long, red, claw-like nails donât ease any uncertainty that she is absolutely, positively up to no good. The first time Coraline meets them, they (and the rest of the Others) seem to be playing roles (for whatever reason, Coraline does not seem to pick up on this), like they all know what to say and what to do and are simply waiting for Coraline to make her move in their terrifying play world. This is shown to be partly true when the Other Parents tell her they know sheâll be back soon after she refuses the buttons - this time, to stay.
Third, the Other Mother commits atrocities that really should not have been in a book for anyone not fully grown up. She physically deforms the world around Coraline to slow her progress in their game beyond any mild traps the movie portrays, and, instead of turning the Other Father into the wandering pumpkin-thing seen in the film, she simply ceases to use him and throws his body away in the cellar, leaving him to rot with whatever bit of sentience he has left. She begins to lose her touch, as Coraline gains the upper hand. Her world doesnât just become a nightmare - it falls apart completely. No creepy but oddly cool bug furniture here, just the house that now appears to be a childâs drawing. Whatever the Other Mother is (a beldame, but something tells me sheâs much more ancient and powerful than that), she does not give half a hump about what she has to do to ensnare Coraline. Destroy the supporting characters of her twisted creation? Done. Allow herself to be dismembered to ruin Coralineâs life in the normal world? Not even gonna bat an eyelash.
On a final, personal note, imagine eight year-old me, ignored by my parents, absorbed in the story and identifying with Coraline from the start. Imagine me finishing this bloodcurdling book and immediately thinking of my basement, where there is still a locked door that my grandmother swears up and down is nothing more than a storage room, but has not once in my (or my motherâs) lifetime unlocked.
Can you see why this book still scares me?
Fun fact I learned from seeing neil gaiman speak: when he first wanted the book published, his editor said it was too scary. He suggested she read it to her young daughter, and then decide. So she did, and her daughter wasnât afraid, and it was published. Years later, Gaiman was sitting next to that daughter at an event and told her this story, and she said âoh I was terrified I just didnât want to tell my momâ.
Coraline WAS too scary to be published, but exists anyway because a girl lied to her mother.
@neil-gaiman, is this true about the publisherâs daughter?
It was my literary agent, Merrilee Heifetz who read it and said âyou canât seriously expect this to be published as a childrenâs book.â So I suggested she read it to her daughters. And she called me back a week later and said âThey love it and they werenât scared at all. Iâll take it to Harper Childrenâs.â
A decade later, at the Opening Night of the Coraline musical, I was sitting next to Morgan, Merileeâs youngest daughter, and told her how her not being scared had made the book happen. And she said âI was terrified. But I needed to find out what happened next. So nobody knew.â
So, yes.
This website can be toxic at times, but the fact that people can just tag Neil Gaiman to get his input, like a sorcerer invoking a benevolent spirit, is definitely a bright spot.
