Aro culture is noticing how romance is basically a product
.
aro culture is feeling that bone deep exhaustion about how the world frames romantic relationships "more" than friends and also being tired of finding myself stuck in that same frame of mind
.
People always say Jean isnt ready for a relationship bur I would like to say: I think Jean is ready for a relationship. Itâs Jeremy Knox who is not ready. This isnt an anti jerejean post. I want them together so bad itâs like the need for air. However, with how Jeremy is currently in the story, I donât think he is ready for one, or itâs more like he doesnât think heâs deserving of one which makes him not ready.
Jean is actually, with the rate Hes going, is at the point in his healing journey where he could realistically get into some sort of a relationship. Heâs already allowing himself to look at Jeremy and understanding that he is deserving of love. Jeremy, on the other hand, is not quite there yet. Heâs been stagnant with his own healing journey for a long time now and we see this through his relationship with other men, how he chooses the ones who hurt him. Hes not where Jean is at. I think he will be once he overcomes that hurdle, but he has not yet. And Itll need to take someone (like Jean) to help him realize just how deserving he is
My mind has felt so quiet since getting on my new meds/them starting to kick in. Is. Is this how neutrotypical people function.

we have to start running a massive PSA campaign to young gay people so everyone understands there is a difference between being a dom and being a top and between being a sub and being a bottom. and also that sometimes you are neither a sub nor a bottom and you're just like shy. we need to be handing out flyers we need ads at every train station spreading the word
Is there a word for occupying the space where normies think you're a freak and freaks think you're a normie?
I tell a woman with a 9 to 5 office job about the slightly niche speculative fiction novel I just finished and she goes "Oh, that's...interesting. I hadn't heard of that."
I tell a grungy chick I met at a dive bar about the same book and she kinda scoffs and goes "Okay" like I said my favorite show is Sesame Street

i love queerplatonic relationships where one of them is aroace and the other isn't. i love when the allo character has a crush that fades over time. i love when they don't care what they are to each other as long as they're together. i love when romance is an option that they don't choose. i love when both aros and allos feel fulfilled without romance or sex.

wattpad really gave ao3 a huge free promo with their new policy update that makes things even worse for their users. so to all the people who are now moving to ao3 due to thisâŚ
welcome! here are what you need to know about ao3 and how itâs the complete opposite of wattpad
trigger warning for the mention of contents that are allowed on ao3 that can be triggering to some.
ao3 is a non-profit organization. itâs run by fans (people like you and me), for fans.
fans donate to the site on their own free will to keep the site up and running smoothly.
ao3 is not a social media. it is an archive.
ao3 doesnât have ads. it doesnât have algorithms. it doesnât have âgoing viral.â
everything is endlessly free on ao3. there is no âao3 premium.â you will never see a single ad on ao3, and you can download as many fics as you want to read offline for free.
ao3 doesnât have an app. and ao3 doesnât need an app. any âao3 appsâ you see are third-party apps and are not affiliated with ao3, so be careful giving these shady apps your login infos or other personal information.
ao3 was built with the main purpose to 1.) be completely against censorship and 2.) host fics that are banned on other platforms like wattpad.
the reason ao3 doesnât have an app is because for it to have its own app, appstore and google play store will have to approve it first. and due to the contents ao3 allow, chances are that it wonât get approved. which is actually a good thing. it doesnât need an app. it works more than fine without an app.
on ao3, every single thing is allowed as long as it is fanfic or fan work (original works, fan art and video edits count as fan works, but if you want to post a video edits on ao3, you will have to post it elsewhere and then link it back to ao3 â ao3 cannot host video edits on its platform due to copyright issues)
by every single thing that is fanfic, I mean every single thing:
the filthiest smut without plot that is written purely for sexual pleasure is allowed. it has its own canonical tag called âplot what plot, porn without plot.â
fics that focus on non-consensual sexual intercourse are allowed, doesnât matter if the fics glorify or romanticize the act, doesnât matter if theyâre written as kinks. they have their own canonical tag called ârape/non-con.â
fics about characters who are minors are allowed, even if theyâre portrayed in a sexual manner, even if theyâre non-consensual sexual intercourse. even if the minor characters are romantically and/or sexually involved with characters who are adults. even if they fics are written in ways that glorify and/or romanticize the thing. they have their own canonical tag called âunderage sex.â
fics about incest are allowed. doesnât matter if they glorify or romanticize the relationship. they have their own canonically tag called âincest.â fun fact: the first ever fic that was posted on ao3 was a fic about an incest ship from supernatural.
fics about self-harm and suicide are allowed. doesnât matter if they glorify or romanticize the act. they have their own canonical tags called âself-harmâ and âsuicideâ also âsuicidal ideationâ, âsuicide attemptâ, âimplied/referenced suicideâ, etc.
fics about violence and gore are allowed, even if they were written for the sake of shock value. they have their own canonical tag called âviolenceâ, âblood and goreâ, âblood and injuriesâ, etc.
rpf is also allowed. doesnât matter if the content of the fics are dark and taboo. theyâre treated the same way as any other fics.
every single dark and taboo fic you can think of is allowed. and it has its own canonical tag. because it is the main reason why ao3 was created in the first place.
âbut what do I do if I donât wanna see fics about xyz?â you can filter out any specific tag, character and/or pairing you want.
âwhat do I do if I wanna find fics about xyz?â you can search for any specific tag, character and/or pairing you want.
a lot of ao3 users rely on tags to search for specific tags, pairings, characters they want. they also rely on tags to filter out and exclude specific tags, pairings, and characters that they donât want to see.
ao3âs tagging system is by far the most efficient one Iâve ever seen.
on ao3, our main principles are âdonât like donât readâ â which means YOU have a responsibility to curate your own internet experience. yes, ao3 allows all kind of messed up fics, but they also allow you the ability to NOT see anything you donât want to see, by filtering out specific fics, pairings and/or characters.
no. you cannot harass authors who write about things that disgust you. you can and will be reported for harassment, and ao3 takes harassment very seriously. they will not take your side. because fucked up fics are allowed on ao3âfucked up fics are the main reason ao3 was createdâwhereas harassment is a direct violation of their terms of service.
ao3 is a house of the freaks and the perverts (affectionate). you ARE in the house of the freaks and the perverts. so donât think about harassing or being rude to the freaks and the perverts who built this anti-censorship house and are kind enough to let you in.
ao3 is proship, profic, and anti-censorship.
any writer can write whatever they want, however they want. the only etiquette is that you tag your stuff properly and accurately
mistagging for visibility is heavily frowned upon here, and it wonât get your works more views. people will either block or report you if you deliberately mistag things with the purpose of getting your fic more views. as Iâve said before, ao3 is an archive. itâs not a social media. it doesnât have algorithms or going viral.
if you come across a fic that has the tag âcreator chose not to use archive warningsâ it means the fic may or may not contain topics that can be triggering, but the author wonât tell you what these topics are, or if there are any at all. so proceed at your own risk.
that said, because ao3 is a non-profit site that hosts millions of works about othersâ copyrighted characters, you CANNOT link a monetization platform anywhere on ao3, you CANNOT mention any donation, commissionâor anything that involves moneyâanywhere on ao3. no, you cannot imply donation, commission, or anything that involves money either. that is against their terms of service.
and because ao3 is a place for fanworks, the âwork sectionâ of your post has to actually be fanwork (fanfic, original work, fan art, link to a video edit count as fanwork). anything that isnât fanwork is not allowed.
you cannot post something on ao3 that is not fanwork. so no political statement, no call-out post, no âIâm looking for fics about xyzâ.
ao3 is anti censorship as long as what your post is actually fanwork and as long as you donât violate their terms of service that Iâve mentioned above.
ao3 has their own team of lawyers to protect them, their users, and every fanwork that is posted on their platform.
last but not least, donât write directly onto ao3. write and store your works elsewhere before copy and paste them onto ao3 once theyâre ready to post!! because ao3 does NOT autosave drafts for you, you risk losing everything youâve typed if thereâs a glitch, if the site crashes or if your device unexpectedly shuts down for whatever reason.
thatâs all for now. have fun and happy writing/reading!
the "shane is assimilated so he just doesn't think about his race and that's why the books don't mention it" argument is so strange to me. like. im largely assimilated in many ways but also constantly othered by being mixed from two different non-white cultures. i promise you even while im sitting here listening to predominantly western music and communicating most efficiently in english, i am still deeply aware of how i am perceived because of my race and appearance, and the ways this impacts my life. i am deeply aware of the disconnects i have with my parents' cultures and the reasons that i struggle with reconnecting with either of them. i am deeply aware of it every single time i am the only brown person in a room.
like i just . there is a difference between writing a character who assimilates vs writing a character of color as a character of color only because of your racial fetish (i.e. only for physical descriptors, and then adhering to a racial stereotype). do you guys think assimilation makes people stupid, unobservant, and completely oblivious to race and racism and its effects on their lives, and incapable of ever having thoughts on their own racial identities, or...?????
Adding on to this as a Black/Latina woman adopted and raised by white parents. We know we are different. I grew up in a house where NO ONE looked like me, and it was thrown in my face whenever my mother wanted to hurt me. When we went places as a family, I felt peoples' eyes boring holes in me. Without going into any more of my history, the idea of a POC never thinking about race, racism, and how they are impacted by it...it's stupid, it's unrealistic, and it is a vile dismissal of our daily experiences.
Shane would have felt this EVERY DAY OF HIS LIFE, from his earliest memory. And once it became apparent to the white hockey boys how exceptional he was, how he made them look like amateurs...his treatment would have become exponentially worse.
RR chose not to explore that for the reasons already stated. Shane fitting into stereotypes mattered to her more than addressing the racism that would be a constant factor in his life.
But I guarantee that he thought about his race. Every day. Every time he was called a racist slur. Every time someone pulled their eyes up at the edges. Every time some kid asked why he has a Western name.
He could NEVER be oblivious to it, because he sees it in the mirror, it's used against him on the ice, and when allegations of throwing games came up, HE was the one accused. NO ONE accused Ilya. He bore those allegations alone. And Ilya never defended him. Because the racism of the allegations didn`t occur to him.
But sure. Shane never thinks about race. Not even when it is the basis of allegations that almost completely destroy his career.
thank you both for sharing personal experiences to explain this. this is why it's so disturbing to me to interact with HR fans doing all this "deep" analysis and discussion of these characters without ever bringing up race. it's so through-the-looking-glass for me to read all these intricate head canons and analyses and have race never once come up. the commitment to "color-blindness" / maintaining racial status quo is amazing.
and the thing is, I don't think it's that the people who do this don't understand. ask any white person who is the only white person in the room if they have noticed race. or just watch them twitch. the folks who are refusing to engage with this topic (the majority of what I see in HR tumblr fandom) just don't want to understand or think about it.
as you have both explained so well, the reality for Shane is that even if he lies to himself and tries not to think about race, that is perversely because he has to think about it in every single interaction, and that because he is minoritized and subject to racism. there is just no getting around it.
the racist takes are awful of course, but tbh for me, the committed refusal to talking about race in the fandom is almost as upsetting. because there's not even anything to react to. it feels so invalidating, but also is harder to address.
like...how are you out here talking about hollanov top/bottom and dom/sub dynamics and not talking about race
how are you out here talking about shane's social anxiety and not talking about race
how are you out here talking about shane's fear of coming out and not talking about race
how are you out here talking about ilya's experiences as an immigrant and not talking about race
how are you out here talking about any part of this story which is about intimacy and power and shame and self loathing and not. talking. about race.
every day i walk into work and my manager says âhere is the rule you must enforceâ and i go âgot it bossmanâ and i spend a couple days enforcing the rule and then my manager comes up to me and says âwhy are you enforcing the rule? we changed the rule yesterday and didnât tell youâ and i go âok bossman new rule it isâ and then a customer comes in asking to break the new rule and i say âsorry you canât itâs the ruleâ and they say âbut you donât understand the rule doesnât apply to meâ and then my manager comes out and says âtheyâre right the rule doesnât apply to themâ and i ask why and my manager says âit just doesnât.â and then the next day we get rid of the rule entirely and no one remembered it existed in the first place.
anyway this sounds like a metaphor for neurodivergence or something but itâs not this is just my fucking life
they should invent a disproportionate emotional response that goes away when you understand it's disproportionate. they should invent a way to logic yourself out of emotions

i think everyone would majorly benefit from swapping "im just a girl" with "im literally nice"
my best tip for anyone trying to get back into reading is to remember that you can read books to avoid other responsibilities in ur life and it can become a vice if you play your cards right
My therapist always says âreading is a healthy hobbyâ and every time Iâm like âgirl not how I do it.â
