The shot of him smooshed against the window initially made me laugh, but it really demonstrates how seriously Watarai takes Hioki's well-being. While the other guys assume Hioki must be fine since he doesn't make a big deal out of how terrified he was, Watarai continuously checks in on him.

Hioki's low self-esteem and natural people-pleasing tendencies mean that he would likely get emotionally short-shrifted in most romantic relationships, but Watarai always prioritizes Hioki's feelings.

From the beginning, Watarai was the one who got Hioki invited on the school trip (by proxy), and even on their excursion to beach, he makes sure Hioki is included.

I also think it's precious that rather than Watarai's appearance, Hioki seems to be falling for Watarai's kindness instead.

Of course Watarai's not perfect. When Hioki is asked who he'd date from their friend group, the other guys smile, but Watarai does that cat-staring-at-a-bird look. His face subtitles state: I will not be ok if you choose someone else.

When they're interrupted by obnoxious drunks, Watarai not only swoops in protectively to remove the guy bothering Hioki--

but he also follows up by checking if Hioki's ok.

And again after Hioki accidentally drinks. If I took a shot every time Watarai checks on him, I'd be obliterated. Still, it's sweet that Watarai wants to be his support. As a bonus, the lighting in this scene is sublime!

Watarai's confession is a little intense, but we'd expect nothing less from him.
