Most people who say they want a "village" really want socialism/a social welfare state, but they're Americans so they can't just say that.

The #1 defining characteristic of a village is that everyone's always up in each other's personal business and your ability to get your needs met depends on your interpersonal relationships and your reputation. Your ability to conform to the rules and expectations the village has set for you.

That means that if the village says you shouldn't get pregnant when you don't have a man to provide for you and you get pregnant regardless, they can refuse to support you. They can reject and stigmatize your child.

When you make a decision—any decision—from what you wear and who you associate with to who you will be romantically involved with and what that will look like, to your education and career, family planning and whether you will leave your partner if they abuse you—the village has a say in all of it.

A proper social state, however, decides which services to provide, how much to fund them etc, there are still cultural biases there, but it won't tell you how to live your life. If all university programs are free, you can go study liberal arts instead of law, your parents can't stop you, and if the state provides a stipend, free housing and free meals while you study and also takes care of your basic needs afterwards, you have the ultimate freedom to do whatever the fuck you want to do with your life.

Want to have 8 children and a trad lifestyle in the countryside? Cool, they'll have healthcare, schooling, meals, competent teachers, after-school activities, public transit, public parks and activities—all for free. And none of that will be dependent on how many people around you like you and your kids personally and what they think of your lifestyle.

You want to be aggressively transgender and live in the city with your 8 person polycule and spend your days doing art and running a café that only does matcha? You can do that too. You'll get free housing for all of you and the business space provided for you, even if everyone in your neighborhood thinks you're weird.

The bureaucrats handing out the collective resources ideally shouldn't give a shit what you do with them.

When I applied for uni and chose a liberal arts degree instead of STEM, nobody told me "yeah no sorry we don't approve of that, you'll have to do something we think is useful or pay for it yourself". I got a free education plus a stipend, subsidized housing and food and everything else.

Unless you want a community of people who get to have a say in everything you do, you don't want a village. Socialism or perhaps communism might cause less despair maybe?

I have to spend some time thinking about this because I'm almost always drawn by the plot, regardless of the actors and genre 😅

So, uhm, please know I am including sub-genres from danmeis and manga, because that's where I started. As always, will be using whatever GIF is available in this hellsite.

Isekai /Transmigration/Time Travel:

As Tien from La Pluie wisely said, sometimes, we need to un-fuck it 😅. Transmigration / Isekai is my most fave sub-genre when it comes to danmeis so I am pretty excited whenever I see a series have a take of it.

Unfortunately, not many live-action adaptations are successful (looking at you, Vice-Versa) and even some animation failed to live up to expectations (looking at you, Scum Villain's Self-Saving System). But done correctly, it can give a very delicious story ☺️

Romantic Drama

While I adore fantasy settings, I also like stories that have realistic touch. Stories that tackle complexities and challenges of everyday life are interesting exactly because there's always this nuance that it can happen to anyone — even to you.

Coming-of-Age

Look, man. Say what you want about school/campus dramas but they do work. Y'know why? Because we all have been there. We were young once. We know what's it like to be riddled by hormones and haunted by bad decisions.

It is easy to say, we were never that dumb when we're young. But we all know that we've been there and done maybe more than THAT lol

Musical

I know, I know singing and Thai BL are fucking punchline atp. But I love musicals, even when it is not BL, and when done right, musical BLs has actually given me new songs to download to my Spotify.

Sometimes, I need a little whimsy in my life and fantasy plots hit the spot.

Copaganda. Everyone knows it's ACAB, but I do find myself watching a crap ton of cop BLs. Mostly because the policework is ALWAYS trash and none of the cop mains ever do anything by the book and typically corrupt cops always end up being the bad guy. Like rn I'm impatiently waiting for Police in Love with YinWar.

Fantasy. Time travel, universe hopping, otherworldly beings, give me everything. I love a series with a fun mystical element. Usually the visuals are stunning too. I'm always going to be treated to a good show!

Mafia/Gang. I love Mafia BLs of any variety. If there's any level of gang activity I'm seated. But what I want is for these characters to stay true to the mafia. STOP LEAVING THE GANG LIFE! LET MY BOYS BE CRIMINALS!

Soulmates. IF THERE IS ANYTHING SOULMATE RELATED I'M GOING TO WATCH IT! Even if it's obscure! There's something about people being made for each other and finding each other in every lifetime. And them choosing to be together and not feeling like they have to be together.

Second Chance Romance. IF IT'S DONE RIGHT! I just love when lovers give it another go. I love when the one who got away didn't actually get away. Usually this types of romance comes with older characters too which I really like.

BL feels like an overarching category and in recent years it has been a delight watching how the genres have diversified. I'm excited to see what everyone's picks are.

1. Coming-of-age: My Only 12%

Stories that let you watch a character grow up, realize his feelings, face difficult decisions, and come out as a young adult at the end of things.

2. School Drama: We Are

Stories that are centered around a school year or activity with all the forced proximity that ensues. Usually with an emphasis on friend groups.

3. Horror: Khemjira

Stories that have elements of horror and are centered around the characters overcoming whatever is haunting them.

4. Tragedy: 4 Minutes

Stories where the characters were doomed from the start, but they fight against their fate regardless even if their story doesn't end with a happily ever after.

5. Bromance: Beyond Evil

Stories where they never say they're in love, but their actions prove otherwise as they choose each other over and over again.

I'm really late with this tag game. I wanted to take the time to write because I wasn't sure how to really do it properly.

Historical Romance mostly paired with Isekai /Transmigration

I love the special vibe you get when you're saying a character being brought back in time to meet the one they will love dearly and everything is happening in the past. I think I like the historical part, partly because of the beautiful scenery and attires. I never get tired of watching this time of stories. I also don't mind if there is no transmigration / isekai part. As long as I get a historical romance, I'm usually falling easily for the story. In addition, I prefer when they give me a happy ending.

Best examples of this genre: I Feel You Linger in The Air, Memoir of Rati, The Masked Hearts, Love Upon a Time...

Revenge Stories:

Sometimes I like to watch stories where a person has been wronged. They wants to make everything right by taking their revenge on the people who made them lose everything. It's cathartic. I especially like when things don't go exactly the way they want and they have to rethink their plans or change things (also I like when there is a romance even if it's a heartbreaking or tragic one). I just don't like when they make them dumb or make too many mistakes that show they didn't really prepare their revenge well.

Best examples of this genre: The Bangkok Boy, Revenged Love, 3 Will Be Free, Payback...

Queer Friendship Representation:

As much as I like to watch romantic love, there is something that I find so precious and that's queer friendship. Friendship is a form of love that is always great to watch, but it's even more interested to me when it comes to queer friendship. I guess it's because you finally feel like you've found people who understand you. It's the idea of feeling seen.

Best examples of this genre: Fourever You (Part 1 & 2), We are, Duang With You, Perfect 10 Liners... Any series made by New Siwaj to be honest.

Fantasy-setting stories:

I take it as umbrella term to regroup any stories that involves supernatural or magical elements. It can also be completely imaginary realms and have magical/mythical creatures (even if I haven't seen a lot of stories this way). I don't mind it when it's paired with another genre (such as horror for example) because there are so many different types of fantasy and it works well when you can get more than one genre in the story. I like how it gives me a taste of escapism.

Best examples of this genre: The Sign, Khemjira, Goddess Bless You From The Death, Pit Babe, Desire, The Untamed...

Coming-of Age Tales:

I've already seen some of my mutuals/usual players said it before, but there is something about coming of age stories that will never be boring and it's about how relatable that can still feel even if we're past the age of the characters. That's probably why I don't get bored by stories set in highschool/universities because they tell a story we've seen and there is something about seeing these characters finding the answers to some of the questions you ask yourself at this age.

Best examples of this genre: MuTeLuv: “Hi” by My Luck, My Love Mix-Up, Love For Love's Sake, School Trip: Joined a Group I’m Not Close To, Secrets Happened on the Litchi Island...

HONORABLE MENTION (because 5 wasn't enough).

Toxic Mess:

I'm thinking here of every series where either a character or some of their actions can be considered toxic. I may not like that in real life, but in stories it can be really entertaining.

Best examples of this genre: Kill To Love, My Stand-In, My Sweet Brother-In-Law, Love Protocol, Meet You at The Blossom, To My Shore...

In this post, @scarefox asks the questions that naturally arise after this episode and worries about our beloved Sun 🥺💖

I hope I can help everyone by informing everyone that Sun never had any intention of sleeping with anyone to achieve his revenge. And even if he felt he had to, please consider who he would have chosen as his "ladder to climb": someone whose power he first tested, someone who was actually useful, someone who smoothly and effectively dismissed Sunny and pretty much told him to fuck off and Sunny promptly fucked off, and—let's be honest, this does matter 😉—someone young, attractive, and interesting.

Besides, Sun talks about offering himself, he never once mentions selling his body. Unfortunately for him, he met a freak who found Sun's determination sufficiently arousing 💀 Besides, Sun isn't the clichéd uke who is innocent, virginal, and completely clueless of the world around him. I'll quote in what he says in response to his manager's warnings and worries in manhwa: "I'm really not that naive and kind."

Also:

Yep, that's our Sun! Whatever happens, whether he has a sponsor or not, he'll figure it out and he'll handle it.

I've always interpreted Sun's revenge as a manifestation of his cunning, perceptiveness, and a perfect reflection of his character and personality. Sunny wanted one thing in life: fame and money, at the lowest possible cost and with minimal effort. And he achieved this by destroying and exploiting those around him. When Sun experienced tragedy, partly as a consequence of his actions, when he became indebted to a loan shark, he repaid it by working the most boring, ordinary, LEGAL jobs, barely sleeping, working every day. Which was also a form of penance.

So his revenge, which involves:

proving that he is better than someone who betrayed him, cheated him, robbed him, was an active factor in his brother's death, and ultimately even stole his own NAME

and that this revenge relies on his own hard work, determination, resourcefulness, overcoming obstacles

and that he does nothing illegal, evil, or dishonorable, something that previously led to his brother's death

Is quite logical and consistent with Sun's character and his story so far 😉 It's also the reason I like him so much. Because ultimately, despite everything that happened to him, everything he did in the past, what he's doing now, Sun never sold his soul or became a bad person. Even his revenge isn't evil, because being better than Sunny doesn't actually mean that anything bad happens to him. And as the series has already shown, Sunny's actions are his own undoing, and he's his own worst enemy, not Sun.

There are many other things behind Sun's motivations and plans, which also explain his behavior, but I can't talk about them without going into spoilers. But one important thing is what we should always remember: Sun isn't Sunny. And everyone around him who knows them both, including Jay, sees this clearly. That's why they're all so interested in him and decide to help him. Because he's so different, both as a person and as someone in the rotten and corrupted entertainment industry. And the most wonderful thing is that Sun completely fails to see this, his own value and uniqueness, which makes him all the more endearing to those around him. And yes, including Jay, who is, of course, completely normal when it comes to Sun 😭😩

Anyway, Sun is my baby and I love him so much 🥺💖 and yeah, he's got this 👍
