There’s a place out there, similar to our very own Milky Way Galaxy, and it consists of a flourishing social system that operates much like our solar one. In this prosperous place, where phone screens shimmer like stars, we have become inconspicuously more connected than any other generation who has lived before us. Our new world, where social media is situated at the center, is built upon a foundation of connectivity and its soil can only reap abundant success through the power of sharing.
This power is strong enough to unite us all, but unfortunately (quite often) I overhear the judgmental whispers from whomever about the people on their social media feed and what they are doing as if posting has somehow infectiously infiltrated their lives. Instead of filling their voice with words of unwavering encouragement for others, sadly, all I hear from these naysayers is negativity.
Pay more attention to the people around you and what they are sharing. They are opening themselves up to you —be kind with that kind of power.
Every photo and every post contains a key. That key unlocks the once closed doors to the soul of another individual. Look carefully. What are they cluing you into and how can you best utilize this knowledge? Is this person happier now, contemplative about a career change, excited for the months to come? The answers to these questions, and more, can be found by simply paying attention. And if you cannot seem to find the answers, then reach out and ask.
Find out more about the people on your feed — that is how genuine friendships are formed. Through sharing we are all granted inside access into the lives of others and yes, sometimes the information seems supremely superfluous, but most of the time it can lead to something beautiful: understanding.
If we change our view from one of judgement to one of understanding we can learn a lot about the people who populate the world around us. Through their sharing, we take a step outside of ourselves and view the world from another person’s perspective. For a second or so, their life is innately interwoven into ours and that is the beauty of social media. With these platforms we are able to see all of our commonalities; although we are all living separate lives and doing different things we all share something special: we want to share and want to view what others are sharing. That is the basis of these networks and we the people continue to not only substantiate them, but more importantly, sustain them.
At this point in time, we can virtually touch one another in ways we have never been able to before so what will you do with your power.
Will you share more? Will you view what others share with a more understanding outlook? Or will you judge them for letting you into their life? I hope the former because with an optimistic outlook we can begin to bring the world together instead of tearing it apart with unjustified judgement. Appreciate what others share and I’m sure they will do the same for you.
Try and see the world from another person’s perspective and not just your own — not only because it’s the right thing to do, but because we now have the potent power to do so.
