Over the years, I have read many stories where Lore was told as a villain, the devious android with a ploy or the irresistible bad boy—and believe me, such stories remain the very best I have ever read—yet, I wished to write him in a more… earnest light, to explore his character and sort through his complexities.

And so, a few weeks ago, I found a certain post from @psybrepunk, reimagining the emotion chip as a 'sensation chip'.

Here, from the post in question, they conceptualized how the chip would allow enjoyment—a satisfying appreciation for bodily pleasures and the capacity for emotional intimacy. And so, after reading such genius, I later pondered how—since Lore stole the chip before Data could use it—that Lore would have experienced such jarring, waves of emotion… alone.

So, for the setting of this story, I placed him in an environment far from civilization—far from his father's judgement, and far from his brother's presence. He is alone, and for the first time, has the chance to reflect on his life.

He ponders on his sins, remembers his unkindness. He now knows the uneasiness of guilt, the regret that lingers afterward. He mourns for the death of his father, the life he could have had with a brother, and feels shame for the anger he has long since harbored. He remembers the colonists, his father—how they thought him too perfect or how his father thought him too flawed. He remembers the confusion, the resentment that festered—but most of all, Lore remembers the pain of never meeting their expectation... of never being adored like his younger brother.

He begins to wish for a better life, a change in direction or a new charted course. He even thinks about settling here, on some alien world—distant from everything he has ever known.

All the while, he seeks refuge in an old temple—never knowing who was once worshipped within these halls now overgrown with ivy.

Perhaps, the only person who could ever understand him, forgive him for his past and love him through his stubbornness… is a goddess who knows both the pain from neglect and judgment.
