its strange how japan's historical role has mostly been that it was a comparatively rural island off of china which saw some of its own smaller warlords, until partway through the colonial period when it's strategic naval geography abruptly switched its global perception to something other than that
natural harbors on the other side of a mountain range from the mainland is a great territory for a very recent state to but for 90% of their history the isolation and divergence from china is just due to being a rural island and not about national identity

Had a dream there was a new six hour long HBomberGuy video that starts with him tryingnto debunk Daniel Molloys novel "Interview With The Vampire" as a fun short video. After thirty minutes in and pulling a "so obviously vampires arent real" thing he launches into a three hour tangent bringing up all the weird historical details that are completely accurate when you accounted for stuff like Louis saying the wrong cemetary or church name
Four hours in he breaks down and says "okay so, this would all point to actual pop rock artist Lestat De Lioncourt being a real vampire, and Kate pointed out he was playing in my town a couple weeks from when we were covering all this. So I called and asked him for an interview to see if I couldnt get a better feel for what was going on"
He then proceeded to take out colored contact lenses and remove the gloves hed been wearing the whole video to reveal he was a vampire and the title card just popped up saying "GUESS WHAT FUCKING HAPPENED" and I woke up before the next two hours of video could play

Venture capitalists in clean tech are starting to say out loud what they’ve suspected for a while: China’s dominance has left key sectors in the West uninvestable.
A group of eight VCs from Western firms agreed to share with Bloomberg the details of a July road trip across China during which they visited factories, spoke with startup investors, and interviewed founders of companies.
They knew China had raced ahead in sectors like batteries and “everything around energy,” but seeing how big the gap was firsthand left them wondering how European and North American competitors can even survive, says Talia Rafaeli, a former investment banker at both Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and Barclays Plc who’s now a partner at Kompas VC.
As financial professionals prepare to gather in New York for the city’s annual climate week, they’ll need to address the reality that China — the world’s largest source of carbon emissions — is now the strongest motor guiding the planet to a low-carbon future. While US President Donald Trump axes the green policies of his predecessor and Europe gets caught up in a regulatory stalemate, China is quietly making a number of transition sectors impenetrable to Western startups.

Apparently in China peach wood (Along with the rest of the plant) is believed to have properties that repel evil spirits, a little similar to silver in European legends or iron for both European fae and West Asian/Middle eastern Jinn. Taoists sometimes keep swords made of peach wood because of this. This made me realize something. If you took a peach wood stick, and attached studs to it of both silver and iron you'd end up with a club or staff (or mace, flail etc.) that would have the weaknesses of many kinds of supernatural creatures while still retaining effectiveness as a normal weapon (peach is a hardwood and silver's poor edge retention doesn't matter for studs). You could even keep adding new stud materials to get something ridiculous that affects over 120 catalogued folkloric monsters. Since you just need a few little studs you could even get some really expensive materials like meteoric iron (a thumb tip sized meteorite can still cost like 10-20 bucks I think). I could somewhat feasibly make a weapon that affects every monster ever thought to walk the earth, from vampires and werewolves to jinn and jiangshi and even mankind.
i bet a HUGE number of vampire hunters would develop obsessive compulsive symptoms around the possibility of being a vampire. carrying around a little compact mirror so they can compulsively check for a reflection. saying DON’T INVITE ME IN to anyone who opens a door for them, and if they forget they have to walk out and tell the person to revoke the invitation. spending hours after counting anything obsessively wondering if they did it compulsively you get the picture
and because vampires exhibit obsessive compulsive behavior i’m sure there’s a huge stigma in the vampire hunter community around admitting to having ocd. i bet it’s fucking rampant. they probably encourage other vampire hunters to take up their compulsions under the guise of sharing life-saving advice
