if projecting nuclear family roles onto found families has one million haters, I am one of them. if labeling found family members as mom/dad/sibling-coded has five haters, I am one of them. if cramming found family into reductive, ill-fitting boxes has no haters, I am no longer alive. if the entire world is against diversity and ambiguity and shades of gray in found family dynamics, I am against the entire world.

Here in shipping civilization, no one goes for the dark ships. It's a lot easier to stick to the canon ships, where all the shipping noobs tend to stay. I might be a shipping noob, but I know I can't just stick to the canon. I have to go for the dark ships. Because without going for those, there's no way I'll ever rank up to be a pro shipper.

Can I be real guys I don’t think the phrase boys will be boys is salvageable. Stop trying to make it cute it’s not cute it is a phrase that is absolutely rotten to the core at worst and at best it ‘just’ reinforces sexist gender stereotypes seriously stop trying to rehabilitate it it’s cringe.

That sentiment actually is exactly what I’m talking about. There is no good ‘what boys will be boys should mean’. Being ‘super fun and whimsical’ is not exclusive to boys. In what world is finding a cool rock and showing it to your friends ‘boys being boys’? Girls can do that too! And do! Everything that boys do girls do as well. Ascribing having fun and being goofy or whimsical to boys is inherently exclusive to the fun, whimsy and goofiness of girls. It’s part of the same sexism that says that girls like to sit quietly while boys roughhouse. It denies girls their interiority and agency and perpetuates a gendered behavioural divide that is entirely the result of sexism and conditioning. If having fun is for boys where does that leave girls?

I keep seeing posts from both ""sides"" (they aren't opposing opinions but the piss on the poor website naturally has a lot of trouble with anything that isn't a black and white us vs them situation) of the write what you want/there's a glaring lack of diversity in fanfic debate and like. What the write what you want crowd don't seem to be able to grasp is that that's literally fine. We all agree that fandom is a fun hobby and no one wants to force people not to write (/draw/make edits of/whatever) whatever they want. The point of pointing out hey, there's a disproportionally high focus on the white/male/cis/etc characters in this media that has plenty of diverse characters to choose from, or that the fanon m/m ship gets more interaction than the canon f/f ship, or whatever else, isn't to force people to fill in the gaps in fandom. It's to make you examine your biases as to why you only ever focus on the white man (etc) in every fandom you're involved in. If your response to "wow it sure is strange that the cishet white male character has more fics than every other character combined" is "fuck you I can write whatever I want", maybe just take a moment to think about why pointing out a fact makes you feel so defensive rather than immediately rushing to make a scathingly worded post.
