(itâs also consistent with consent models or rape law; there is no actual act or circumstance which constitutes rape, an act becomes rape if a man canât find a woman able to be convinced to submit) it places the burden on the woman to prove she didnât want what happened to her so that she can access intervention, provides no help at all to women who do romanticize or eroticize male violence and control, and still provides no meaningful definition of abuse.
Something about the word consent in feminist and liberal lingo has always bothered me. 'Enthusiastic consent' 'Consent is key' 'consent is sexyy' 'Don't post nudes of women on the internet without her consent' 'never put your hands on a woman without her consent', or conversations around the importance of consent in surrogacy, sex work, bdsm, everything. Then it kind of clicked, because consenting to things in these scenarios is a relatively passive action. It is soo one sided. Consent implies that there is one who proposes and one who accepts. Consent is defined as something that 'occurs when one person voluntarily agrees to the proposal or desires of another.'
She can consent, even enthusiastically, say yes or no, like a binary code, but she did not design, propose, initiate or orchestrate it, nor can she fully control the outcome in the society she lives in. And this is true on a mass scale. When have you ever heard of sex being described as men consenting to a woman's sexual advances? Or discussions that you shouldn't upload men's explicit pictures without their consent?
Male consent is not considered an important factor because their desires are assumed inevitable, like a force of nature, a neutral, unquestioned starting point, and women can only exist relative to that, to either accept or deny. They can't have active desires of their own. Men are considered actors fundamentally and women are the ones acted upon.
Of course consent is important and essential, but would consent in these scenarios be all that much better than non consent given the coercive society we live in? Consent is a poor ethical framework if taken alone. Consent itself in these scenarios can never be ethical because the premise itself is unequal, as are social interpretations and outcomes, and no amount of agreement will change that.
No one says you consent to go on vacation, you consent to go to the beach, you consent to go to a restaurant.... Consent is only really used for things in legal spaces, or like something you don't really want but agree to as a trade. Like you consent to surgery so you can feel better, not because you love being cut open. You consent to a drug test so you can get hired, not because you just love having blood drawn. "Consent" is almost always used to refer to something you begrudgingly agree to do in return for a benefit of some kind.... And sex.
But if it's something actually fun, you don't say you consent to it. You don't consent to go to a concert, you either want to go or don't. You don't consent to going to a sleepover with your friend, you either want to or don't. No one says "I consented to enter this bouncy castle at my birthday party!"
Consent as a concept frames sex through the framework of what men can get away with "ethically" (legally), rather than through what women actually WANT.

Ok I realized after an irl rf meeting that I hadnât talked about this on here

If you are going to cohabitate long term and/or buy property together and/or have a child with a man and you live in a country with no fault divorce and other favorable marriage laws
GET A PRE-NUP AND MARRIED
So why would I, a separatist, encourage you to get married?
because a pre-nup (or your local equivalent) and marriage is for YOUR legal and financial protection
and if he gives you any shit about it like itâs unromantic or you believe the relationship isnât going to work out for pursuing a pre-nup, that is a Major Red Flag and you definitely should not proceed with that relationship
From talking to people in person (radfem and not) most people still see divorce as if things are the same as in the US when no fault divorce was legalized in the 70s and divorce rates are just sky high but thatâs not accurateÂ
Divorce rates are going down but thatâs because wealthier people are more likely to marry and less likely to divorce so marriage is rarer but lasting longer than in the 70s and 80s etc
the commonly talked about reasons for this trend as seen in the article are that wealthier people have more financial security so thatâs why they marry as weddings are expensive and since financial stress is the biggest reason marriages fall apart, if you already have money, youâre not as likely to divorce
and one thatâs usually only talked about in financial spaces (like finance magazines, youtubers, podcasters) is that a good marriage is a wealth generator as in if the couple are both financially smart, having a higher combined worth helps in investment and asset management and they are likely to get a social boost in the workplace from marriage (itâs mostly for men but it does mean more income coming into the household)
and the part I donât really see talked about and likely why poorer couples donât get married is that a pre-nup and marriage is asset protection
If you own assets whether investments or property or anything else, you are incentivized to protect it and ensure you keep it
The most effective way to protect it in a relationship where you start combining finances is with a pre-nup and marriage
But for a lot of people living paycheck to paycheck or who only have a lot of debt, you think you have nothing monetarily speaking and a wedding is too expensive, so why bother doing anything?
Except if you donât marry, you really do have nothing, nothing of his is yours, nothing legally ties him to you, he can kick you out of a house or a shared apartment if youâre not married or on the lease or on the deed, you have absolutely no legal claim to fight him on any of it, if he up and dies on you, you get nothing, it goes to his next of kin and if they donât like you, youâre screwed etc
Now there are a lot of places with common law marriage, it varies by country and even in the US it varies by state, but after a certain amount of time living together, you are considered married so you will have some legal rights in the relationship but itâs not necessarily ideal
if you donât have a pre-nup and want to separate after common law marriage, a lot of times youâll have to go 50-50 on your combined assets with him and maybe if youâre lucky you donât have to get a lawyer to fight him on any of it, but thereâs a chance you may have to
But if say you have a car you brought into the relationship you need to get to work or school and because you now have to split it 50-50 that means you have to sell the car and split the proceeds with him, which would you rather have? A working car or half of what your car is worth in cash?
Thatâs why itâs better to have a pre-nup and get married and have it all written up ahead of time, you donât have to have a big expensive wedding, just go to a courthouse and sign the paperwork
That way you have legal rights within the relationship and over your assets and if something goes wrong and you need to split, you have paperwork saying this is yours and you donât have to go paying a lawyer to argue over it
A pre-nup and marriage is still not a silver bullet though which is why I still discourage getting so entwined with a man legally and financially

even if you do get a pre-nup and married, a man can still find ways to come after you through the courts and drain you financially through lawyer fees
When you marry, depending on where you are, his debt could become your debt and it could affect your credit score, and any debt on shared assets/after you marry will obviously be shared even if heâs the only one racking it up
You need to know his debt before you get married, do not pass go if you cannot check his financials or he tries to hide them
I would also say you need to really check if he has a gambling problem, this has basically always been an issue for women in marriage, but it used to be in a separate physical space and underground, now itâs on your phone anywhere
The two biggest modern areas of concern are video games especially the ones with loot you can buy and now sports betting being legalized
Do NOT marry any man that gambles
the second biggest issue after gambling is moving to be near his family, not yours especially if itâs in a different country
His family could be a nightmare and now itâs gonna cost you or your family money to get to each other when it costs him nothing
But if youâre in a foreign country, and you and your family donât have any status, youâre screwed I donât care how nice and friendly any country presents itself to attract immigrants or whitewash itself, theyâre gonna be xenophobic at minimum to you and likely racist if you are not of the same ethnicity or race of the countryâs population/government, you will not win brownie points over a native man in their justice system
And if you try to escape abuse with a child involved and go back to your own country, you could be hit with the hague abduction convention and have your child forced to go back to their father while you are criminalized and potentially canât re-enter the country
And lastly if you have the ability to save any amount of money, you need what my mom calls mad money, in other words a savings or investment account that he does not have access to where if you get mad enough to leave, you can do it just walk out immediately and be away from him
and if youâre like this is too much how would I work this all out, youâre not ready for a relationship where youâre moving in and combining assets
marriage is not and has never been about romance, it is and has always been a legal matter concerning property and ownership, you need to check how to protect yourself
(and I do say the same to anyone gay in a country with gay marriage, people fought for you to have the right to marry your same sex partner, make sure you are legally and financially covered especially if either of you have homophobic relatives)
(Also on a specifically Canadian note, you CANNOT get an immediate divorce in Canada, you have to be separated for a year before you can divorce but most women in my Canadian rf group didnât know this and I think itâs anti-feminist to force women to wait and remain legally tied to a man for a whole year when the reason for it is purely administrative as they instituted this year long wait because women were withdrawing their divorce aka this wait is an administrative barrier keeping women in relationships they donât want and it is a trend for Canadians to not divorce and just be separated until they want to remarry and we canât fight against it if youâre unaware of this policy)

If you mention a statistic that shows women tend to behave in positive or benign ways like "women commit vastly less violent crime than men." then you're accused of being a pseudofeminist who has bought into the idea that women are inherently morally superior and can't ever do any wrong. "Men are more violent" is taken to be dogmatic essentialism rather than a hypothesis that's been proven again and again. When people argue against it, they don't show you studies of women being violent, they suggest you just believe in inherent goodness and badness.
If you mention illnesses or horrific events that are more likely to happen to or more adversely impact women, you're accused of stigmatising the men who suffer and telling them their suffering isn't real. (Or that you're being unfair to men by not mentioning things that adversely affect them)
We're told it's unfair to notice patterns of behaviour (and even worse try to then suggest action as a result of these statistics) because it's generalising and probably unfair to some poor man. We're told you can't apply statistics to inform our relationship with the world, society or individual men.
Iâve definitely noticed this. Like âInvisible Womenâ by Caroline Criado-Perez, which I think is one of the most eye-opening books that any woman could read about how society undervalues us, underserves us, and harms us, yet I now see it called âtransphobicâ because women = female and man = male and thereâs no mention made of females who are men or males who are women. Thereâs literally no point to that criticism beyond obfuscating harms done to women. Â
