Traveling across the country for my half sister's wedding was awful. I ended up being awake for 34 hours straight, and was in airports/cars/planes for about 25 hours of that.
Lots of complaining below. π
We drove 3 hours to the city because flights were cheaper from there than from anywhere closer to home. It was supposed to be an overnight flight. But it was delayed, delayed, delayed, and then finally cancelled because they overbooked one of the attendants and once she arrived from her previous flight she was too exhausted to do another six hours for our flight and I guess they didn't have ANYONE else who could do it? I blame the airline, not her, but canceling a flight for 150ish people because they've overbooked one employee is so aggravating.
And the only option to get here before the day of the wedding meant that we had to stay overnight at the airport (if we'd left, we'd only have like, 2 hours to sleep at a hotel before we had to get up and go back through airport security, get to our gate, etc., for boarding at 5:45am. So we ended up being at the airport from 9:30pm to 6:30am before actually taking off.
They gave us airplane pillows and blankets and my mom and SIL managed about a cumulative hour of sleep on the concrete floor. I tried, but laying on a dirty concrete floor, bright lights, announcements over the speakers every 5 minutes, vacuuming robots rumbling around. It was impossible for me.
The replacement flight took us to Seattle first, which is two hours in the opposite direction from where we needed to go. We then had less than 45 minutes to get to our next gate and board. I was squished between two strangers because the airline used us to fill in all the middle seats in an already packed flight. My dad bought me a cheeseburger from a restaurant right by the gate that I didn't have time to eat so I ended up just holding it in my lap until we took off and reached altitude and then I felt weird eating a burger on a flight where nobody else had food until a guy in front of me started eating something really pungent that he'd brought on with him, so I was like. Fuck it. And I ate the worstest, coldest cheeseburger of my life squished between strangers.
We got a rental van and it took about two hours to get to where we're staying. The first thing I did was shower. Then I ate a slice of pizza and slept for twelve hours. My body feels one million years old.
Unrelated but any time someone mentions clown makeup I'm reminded of how highly successful stage magician Penn Jillette almost flunked out of clown college and had to take remedial clown makeup classes.
My father was a magician and a clown. When he died, we cleared out his old clotehs and there was his clown suit.
"Oh I'll take this down to the charity shop" said my mother, missing hte part where no sane person is going to wear a clown suit.
"Nah" said I, "Have them dress him in it when they cremate him."
There was a pause and my throw-away joke started to slowly solidify into 'Yeah let's do that'.
A discussion was had with the mortician who had a bit of a worry that the costume would involve giant clown shoes which would prevent the coffin closing.
Luckily it wasn't that sort of outfit.
I told this to my dear friend who immediately envisaged someone trying to close a coffin onto a dead clown, only to have the big red nose go *Sad honk* every time there was an attempt to close the lid.
The awful hilarity rendered her incapable of standing.
