sometimes i can spare a bit of empathy for that but why is women's pain and degradation not enough for most of them to stop participating

people took the “fiction doesn’t affect reality” philosophy and turned it into “reality doesn’t affect fiction” which is plainly incorrect. like believe it or not books/movies/tv shows/comics/video games/etc are ALWAYS influenced by the culture in which they were made. and so is your reaction to it. the way you interact with media made by/featuring people of color or women or other marginalized groups can be influenced by your own implicit biases and that of the person who created it. you don’t get a free pass to be racist or misogynistic in fandom just because “these characters aren’t real”.

as a pharmacist seeing content about the side effects of birth control made in this very sensationalist way makes me feel weird because yes it’s important to make a fully informed decision about the risks of taking contraception, but you need to understand that ALL medications have rare but serious side effects. everyday medications like paracetamol and ibuprofen have crazy side effects like heart failure and death but people still take them because there’s an understanding that these risks are extremely rare. yes they happen to some people but statistically you’re probably more way more likely to die in a car accident than get a brain tumour from birth control pills. but that doesn’t stop you from getting into a car. Birth control isn’t for everyone but it is an incredibly valuable medication that is a cornerstone of women’s health and reproductive rights. In an age of increasing right wing ideology, abortion bans, violence against women, and fears around reducing birth rates, going out of your way to make fear mongering statements about contraception and paint it as this big scary medication that’s going to kill you feels like a psyop
