existential female despair

the thing about being bullied for being weird as a kid is that even if you've always embraced being weird your brain is still always looking for the line where it's too much. you can be as proudly and intentionally weird as you want and you can love being weird but your mind is still convinced there's a point where you get too weird and people start treating you like a weird looking bug again. also it feels like you reach that point 500 times a day even if everyone you've spoken to today found you pleasant and likable and even if you're completely alone in your house with nobody looking at you at all.

in a male-centric media, you can literally go the entire story seeing maybe one single background woman and it's never questioned, interrogated, or even just lightly pointed out that this society seems to consist entirely of men. in a 'female-centric' media, you are still expected to have an 'acceptable' amount of men -- they still often take up most of the background cast and likely the secondary cast of characters. if you were to make a cast that was compromised ONLY of women -- including secondary and background characters -- it suddenly becomes a purposeful choice that makes the audience distinctly uncomfortable.

the thing about words like 'bitch' and 'cunt' is that they are, by definition, slurs against women. just because they're used in the common vernacular casually and lightheartedly doesn't change that fact. if anything it's demonstrative of how little people care about everyday misogyny.

I’ve heard/read people “But in some places it’s just a fun word, not a real insult!” As if that makes it better

None of the perceived privileges of women in relation to men under patriarchy are actual privileges, they're simply patriarchy giving relatively small backfires on itself like it happens to any hierarchical system. But in the end, these backfires are pretty small in comparison to the benefits the system gives to its privileged class.

Isn't it kind of crazy that some women go "but what if I LIKE being subjugated? Doesn't that actually make me MORE feminist? Possibly the most feminist ever?" and everyone just nods along
