hey everyone I have a pretty janky very basic kindle but I really tire of their stupid proprietary file type and their attempts to get me to spend a trillion dollars on things I do not even own. does anyone have e-reader recs for something that can *easily* read all kinds of files, and maybe even lets you read stuff in-browser? š¤ like something that would let me read an article from Online without Downloading it as a PDF and converting it to some other thing and spitting twice and touching my toes three times?
i recommend kobo! i got the clara bw recently and i love it, its essentially their equivalent of the paperwhite (so perfectly legible in the sun).
they have an integration with "instapaper" that lets you easily download and read any articles / websites. just copy a link into the app and read it on the e-reader! full disclosure i haven't tested the integration super thoroughly on different document types, but it's worked well so far.
sorry for the delay in responding to your message. I was walking around the house with unclear intentions

Intelligent alien species based on bugs but specifically those moths that donāt have mouths and only live for a week after they pupate. This speciesā whole conscious life is actually in the larval phase; larvae are the ones considered people, larvae are the ones with conscious and complex brains who build society, and each instar of the larva is treated as a different phase of life. Larvae become emotionally and socially and cognitively mature without ever becoming sexually mature. When they pupate, they metamorphose into something different and strange and close to mindless, with no mouth and no digestive system, whose only instincts are to mate and then quickly die. Metamorphosis is treated, functionally, like a personās death, and the imago phase is a kind of proto-afterlife of majestic flight and the continuation of the species. Birth and death inextricably intertwined. Sex is not something people do during their lives, itās a thing that is done as an imago after youāve passed on from your life but before you return to the soil in death. Resultant eggs are collected by family members to raise. I think this would be fun.

i've decided i'm going to learn more about yellow-headed blackbirds than anyone else. this is a strange and almost juvenile-sounding goal but no one seems particularly interested in studying them. if you try to search for information on them or certain behaviors you get the generic field mark and blurb guides, a few paywalled academic articles, and... posts by me, funnily enough. i just made a separate blog for my bird photography, but expect another at some point specifically focused on my documenting the colony of these birds that i now visit weekly.
i'm not a spiritual person, nor do i believe in the prophetic power of dreams, but i do think they serve as important windows into our fears and motivations and i think it says something that the only time i have actively photographed a bird in my dreams it was indeed a yellow-headed blackbird.
look at my blackbirds boy
the more i read about these birds the more insane i feel. i think the isolation of this tiny marsh might actually be doing some galapagos shit to the blackbirds there because everything from their vocalizations to their nesting habits completely eschews known data.
did you know that they are capable of imitation? don't worry! apparently no one else does either, but i have personally overheard them doing terrible approximations of not only red-winged blackbird songs, but also rooster crowing, ring-necked pheasant squawking, and what i now believe to be an eastern meadowlark song (which i have captured on video, something about which no one gave a fuck!!)
they are supposed to be drawn to marshes with deep water, over which multiple females will weave nests in single male controlled territories of typically 1k to 6ksqft. the waters of this marsh are wading depth, and the males control micro-territories of what cannot be more than 500sqft each-- territories that they share neutrally with marsh wrens.
this marsh is the last surviving 50 acre oasis of wetland in what used to be hundreds of miles of it, now turned into farmland. yellow headed blackbirds have been migrating across this continent for over 100,000 years according to fossil records. how does one compromise with their instincts telling them to travel a specific, ancestral route that looks and feels nothing like what their genetic memory tells them? they adapt, or they disappear, and a bird like this could never accept silence. i don't think.
I don't know how or why, but sometimes a species reaches out to you to be its caretaker and you just gotta answer the call.
Okay but like not to beat the point to death but Laura Stacey really is that girl
Sheās the great-granddaughter of a legendary hockey player, she bounced back and made the national team after breaking both her wrists in college, she lost gold at the Olympics and started a charity about it, she married another legendary hockey player that she fell in love with when they saw a shooting star that no one else did when they were skinny dipping with their team, they won gold at the Olympics and then had the royal wedding of Canadian womenās hockey and they have the cutest dog ever, shes alternate captain on a professional team with her wife who is the captain, they play on a line together, when she was the only captain/alternate captain not injured she led her team to first place, she leads the league in shorthanded goals this season, she scored a goal one time on her wifeās birthday when the clock showed both of their numbers, she had her knee popped back in its socket on the ice (probably) with 8 seconds left in the game then went on to assist the game winning goal in overtime that same game, she won the Walter cup with holes in her socks, anyway shes so fucking cool
I really can and will blame the 9-5 for everything. "We're in a loneliness epidemic" well, we have to spend a third of our day interacting with people in a professional way that makes forming real friendships difficult and then we're peopled out by the time we're done. "People are eating more and more unhealthily" people have to spend more than a third of their day doing work related tasks and they don't want to spend their tiny amount of free time making food. "People aren't involved in their local communities" after spending more than a third of their day doing work related things people are tired and also all those community events take place during normal working hours. "People need to get more hobbies" after spending more than a third of their day working, people are TIRED and don't want to do anything that takes yet more energy. "Literacy is dying" to maintain your critical thinking skills you need to read/watch things that make you think and after spending more than a third of your day doing work related stuff you are TIRED and don't want to expend even more brainnpower. "People need to get outside more" People. Are. TIRED. Because they have to spend all of their time working or preparing for work or recovering from work or doing all the chores they couldn't stay on top of because of work. I can blame fucking anything on having to work, it is truly the root of all fucking evil.

Final animal sketchbook pages for the book I want to make are complete. I realized that the 5.5x8.5 sizing is not really matching my sketchbook page size, so I'm gonna have to tweak all the pages a bit woops haha. If I don't get my KS done in time, I'll just make the books anyways and set up pre-orders maybe. Idk. Anyways that PB page was really difficult and also cathartic to make. If you read it please appreciate that it was a Really Bad Time, and I'm still dealing with it.
Man I miss free the nipple. Its getting warmer and we donāt even have free the nipple anymore
feminism has backslid so hard in recent years people don't even know what free the nipple means anymore
To clarify for those who don't know, "free the nipple" isn't about going braless, it's about going topless
No shirt, no bra, completely bare torso, just like cis men are allowed to
It's about desexualizing breasts and "female presenting nipples" and not being criminalized for our bodies if we want to go topless because it's a million damn degrees out. This was a popular growing movement that was still widely known a decade ago!
And the fact that not wearing a bra is so discouraged and stigmatized that people think the movement was about being able to go braless under your shirt in public rather than about being able to not wear a shirt at all says a lot about how far we've backslid in the past decade
bus is my friend. shes no train but shes trying her hardest in a world that hates her

maybe next year instead of amateur fireworks on every block for hours and hours we can try holding up a single beautiful flower
