Also like…..the stuff in the hunger games is important stuff for kids that age to read about. Because it’s real shit. Yeah, the child death arena and genetically mutated murder/torture monsters aren’t real. But the government tyranny, political propaganda from both sides of the war, the way carefully curated narratives were formed out of the lives of people who were just trying to survive or do what they thought was right, the way war makes you mentally justify some horrific shit in the name of “the greater good,” the way that the government constantly tried to separate people into classes that while they seemed very different on the surface were all ultimately victims of the same horrific policies, the way trauma and ptsd can change a person, the way that tragedy is sometimes inescapable but healing is still possible? That’s all important. And if you miss it because you’re worried about it being too dark or violent, then you’re more susceptible to the very political and corporate machines that Collins was alluding to and warning readers against.

In fairness to King Kong, if I had a tiny adorable primate in my hand I would also be very resistant to someone taking it away from me.

friendly reminder that if you have a hard time eating due to nausea or other chronic illness ickies, just eat what you can eat. even if it’s not particularly “healthy,” getting calories in your body to help it function is more important.
