The LGBTAQ Ally Oath
I (insert name) solemnly swear that:
- I will do my absolute best to never misgender you, and if I am unsure of pronouns I will ask.
- I will never refer to straight or cis people as “normal” people
- I will not pretend I understand the difficulties you go through, nor will I invalidate those difficulties.
- I will not assume your sexuality or gender or really anything about you.
- I will defend you when I can, but I will not speak for you or over you in situations where you are present to speak for yourself.
- I will support gay marriage but I will be aware it is far from the only issue plaguing the queer community and that racism, classism, sexism, and poverty also play large roles in queer oppression and need to be fought.
- If I hear you complaining about straight people or cisgendered people I will understand you are expressing frustration with the society that overwhelmingly favors those people, not me personally, and I will not try to argue or defend.
- If you tell me I am doing something wrong I will defer to you and examine/change my behaviors.
- I will research for myself things I do not understand, and I will not treat you like an encyclopedia, nor will I ask personal questions unless given express permission.
- I will always be aware of how my privilege makes things easier for me, and I will strive to change my own actions to lessen oppression.
- I will understand that I am never going to be perfect and that reexamining my privileges is an uncomfortable and humbling process, but I will continue regardless.
- I will not fetishize or objectify your sexuality or gender identity
- I will not try to butt in where I’m not wanted.
- I will treat you with the dignity and respect you deserve as a human being.
