he was there during siege of the North. he infiltrated the spirit oasis. he has an uncle who studies spirits and the spirit world. he watched the sky go dark then the moon suddenly reappear like everyone else in the entire world did. and most importantly he watched zhao get eaten by a giant godzilla fish spirit.
Also, Iroh was there? He literally watched Sokka make out with the moon spirit. And you want to tell me that a romantic sap like him would not have immediately told Zuko about this romantic tragedy? Please, Zuko has known about this for ages, he just knows that this is not an acceptable situation in which to say āyeah, I know.ā

Has this ever happened to you? You're making a social media post or video or whatever about Fire Emblem Heroes, and you point out that a primary feature of the game is its unrelenting torrent of horny-just-verging-on-explicit female character designs: the physics-defying bras, the impossibly-contorted boobs-and-butt poses, upskirts and camel toes galore, strategically-placed rips in damaged art, the odd foot focus here and there, etc.
You're making a good case - not that it's hard, IS is not subtle about any of this - but then someone comes along and leaves a comment to the effect of "but the summer banners have shirtless men! Checkmate, loser."
This post aims to counter that, to demonstrate that genuine male fanservice on par with what FEH does with its female characters looks very, very different and amounts to much more than just muscular guys with their shirts off. To do so, I'm going to have to pull example art from pretty much the only video game subgenre that can be relied upon to deliver here: sexually explicit gay dating sims. We're going to be looking at how these games frame the male body, and what sexualized (partial) male nudity really looks like outside of the aspirational power fantasy lens adopted by most mainstream, straight-male directed media including FEH.
Of course, I'm gay myself, and I can anticipate the rebuttal to this rebuttal - that women, allegedly, do not eroticize the body in the same way as men...unless they're dirty fujoshi in which case their opinions can be immediately discarded. I leave it to any women reading this to have fun unpacking that nonsense.
(It must be noted that, while the games I'm pulling these images from are all explicit, I've gone out of my way to select art that would theoretically fall within what seem to be the content guidelines of FEH: no exposed genitals or bare butts. I'm labeling this post SFW-ish all the same though, so use your discretion when viewing.)
Let's start with something simple and softcore from Coming Out on Top.
This is a variant on a popular mild fanservice image: a guy lifts his shirt, exposing his belly (and possibly stomach hair). In context this is also intended to convey vulnerability, as the character is drunk and struggling to undress. Also noteworthy is that the framing here is explicit with the MC in the shot.
Continuing with the softer stuff, here's one from clicker game Blush Blush.
This game has a bunch of technically SFW options to choose from, but I went with this for two reasons. One, it's an example of how shirtless men can be eroticized without being excessively muscular; two, it's a goofy holiday pic that teases with the strategically-placed candy cane and the allusion to the "Dick in a Box" Saturday Night Live song. The NSFW variation of this image goes full throttle with that idea.
From All Men Are Pigs:
I really wanted to include something from this game as its art style stands out quite a bit in contrast to many of the others here, although unfortunately some of the best examples break the rule. Here in a rare (for these games) non-sexual action pose, the character is performing a ballet routine on a stripper pole in a gay bar: a campy concept that works fairly well in context and that explicitly calls attention to the character as an eroticized object. He is, however, consenting to the in-universe ogling, and as he's elsewhere revealed to have experience with sex work it's understood that he knows the value of showing off his body. Call that something you'd never hear a character express in FEH...except someone like Camilla, perhaps?
Let's get a little spicier with a pair from Full Service.
This may be the tamest of the swimwear outfits seen in the game's beach episode, but I wanted something that would compare to the summer banner designs of FEH's male characters. Even so, note the pose: reclining, legs slightly open, displaying a single nipple. This guy is the biggest bottom in the game's cast and is framed as such, even with the relatively conservative outfit and the sunglasses obscuring his face (which symbolically tie into his internalized biphobia and anxiety about publicly expressing his attraction to men). Further, because this character is a model it may be assumed that the posing is intended to be read as deliberate.
This one comes from the game's costume night set piece, which includes several designs that wouldn't be out of place in some of the more random seasonal banners. I chose this one as a counterpoint to what FEH does with its shirtless men. There's the cocky expression, the crotch bulge with nothing underneath, and the angling which makes it look like he's standing over you. To contrast the beach image, this guy is the total top of the cast, so the musclebound partial nudity is less about being aspirational for the presumed viewer and more about erotic dominance.
For something more fantastical, here's one from the sci-fi title The Symbiant: Re:Union.
This game's main claim to fame is alien tentacle porn, but this scene is intended as a moment of genuine, human(oid) vulnerability for the character, on the night when he reunites with his ex (the MC and viewer here) for the first time in two years. The camera pans up over his entire body, ending on this view in profile with a very large nip slip and the cigarette calling attention to his hand and mouth. As with several others, this image is also deliberate enticement, conveying both the languor of casual hookups and the weight of the characters' history together. (Obviously a mobile gacha doesn't have the space to grant such narrative or thematic significance to its eroticism...but that is part of the point.)
Moving along, here's one from Camp Buddy: Scoutmaster Season. Get ready for the just-shy-of-X-rated.
This one's a character portrait, unlike all the others here which are CGs, so debatably it's more in line with what you'd see in FEH. And...yep. It's a sexy bull costume. "Crotch bulge" doesn't begin to cover it, there's the pubic hair, the pierced nipples, and assorted other bits like the bell and the saddle and the tailed butt plug. Some time ago I showed off a different horny character design from this game and got an anon calling it stupid, so let's talk about that. Is this design technically something someone could wear in real life? Yes; parts of it resemble bondage gear, and the character displays his interest in leather in another scene. Is it impractical and stupid? Quite possibly. Does the subsequent sex scene take full advantage of the costume for some Dom/sub barnyard roleplay? Also yes. This continues my point about designing beefy (heh) muscular guys, and how there's a world of difference between this and, like, Hawkeye or summer Ephraim/Dimitri/whoever.
Incidentally, this character also has an oversized dick to the point of straining disbelief and the MC's insides. If you're looking for the male equivalent of breasts so enormous they can barely be held in by barely-there tops, that would be giant dicks - and there's no way in hell that we'll ever see those in FEH, even in technically SFW bulge form.
Continuing with BLits's games, here's one from the upcoming Jock Studio.
It's a male boobs-and-butt pose, one that doesn't require the character to dislocate his spine! I chose this image because the pose and outfit choice is remarkably similar to that of the notorious Tharja Summer Scramble DLC pic that got censored outside of Japan. Jock Studio actually has a better instance of the same pose with a different character, one where the MC's horny dialogue even calls attention to the ampleness of those two elements; unfortunately, the character has his underwear off there so it's too horny for this post. Much like Tharja with Anna in the DLC, here the character is being surprised by someone walking in while they're changing and making comically lewd remarks about their body. The contextual difference is that, rather than being forced into a swimsuit, the character here is disrobing to film a pornographic scene, and is only surprised by the MC only just now learning that their club makes porn. Hilarity ensues in both cases, but JS's setup is ironically less voyeuristic despite the game's premise.
Finally, let's close things out with one last image from Coming Out on Top. Very borderline, but I've got a distinct point to make with this one.
Like a lot of media, gay dating sims often struggle with eroticized depictions of various types of men, among them fat, hairy, and middle-aged (or older). I believe the oldest human character with a stated age in this post is the bull guy, and he's merely in his 40s. But back to the image above, it takes full advantage of the size and age of the character on the right relative to the MC. His bulk takes up much of the frame, but it's clearly an intimate, protective embrace you'd expect of a bear daddy character. I point this out because larger and/or older male characters are often disregarded outright in FEH, or like Fargus recently they're paradoxically given more fanservice-y designs (Visible nipples and chest hair! In FEH!) presumably because the developers think that no one would look at them that way.
I think that's enough for now. The important thing to remember here is that sexual fanservice is more than simply degrees of nudity. It's about framing, angling, which body parts are emphasized, and when possible the surrounding circumstances and how they inform the character's eroticism. Is it deliberate, is it accidental...
...or is it just there to get you to gamble for your favorites?
A master to his action-hero trainee says, "Your movements are sloppy. You lack awareness of your body when you fight. Your hands move and yet you do not hold them in your mind's eye. Come. We will remedy this."
And then the master paints his trainee's fingernails and orders the trainee to complete a series of complicated tasks without smudging the nail polish.
Trainee grumbles that this is stupid when the first set of tasks is just cleaning the dojo. Within two minutes he reaches for the dustpan and knocks the edge of his pinky nail against it in a way he's never noticed before. He's staring at the baby blue smudge and suddenly he understands things differently.
There's a montage of days passing as he fetches water, chops wood, hoes crops, washes clothes. His nails are a different color during each cut. He's sprinting up the mountain with a fresh wet pedicure and the master is nodding in approval. The master's nails are flawless tech art.
He's reached his final assessment and it's a sparing match against his master. The air smells of acetone. His and the master's nails are all freshly painted. He must land a blow on the master with his mani and pedi fully intact.
Suns and moons pass. Streak in the ring finger. Smudge on the pinky. A full-handed block at the cost of three nails of paint. A hit on his master, and he hoots in delight until the master points out the unguarded toe whose polish is now streaked across the master's robe.
Days pass in frustration and exhaustion. By day 40, he has every digit of his acutely in his mind's eye. He senses the master's attack, ducks, dodges, all fingers all toes all himself, aware, and he strikes with his wooden sword.
It connects with the master. The master pauses. The trainee raises his left hand into view--5 digits of flawless sunflower yellow. His left foot. His right foot. And finally his right hand, raised in triumph.
The master smiles. "You have passed. I have just one more technique to teach you."
The technique is how to draw little flowers into the nail art. So really this one is optional.

So can non-disabled people stop doing that thing where they act like itās morally righteous to force yourself to work while youāre sick and assume taking sick days automatically equates to laziness. Any time now. Thatād be great
The leader of the scout group I help out at approached me out of hours while I was walking to work to tell me that people have been talking behind my back because I missed more sessions than I attended this term (on account of having Covid twice) and was like āWe all show up when weāre sick because we take responsibilityā and I felt really shitty and guilty and cried the whole workday then I got home and told my mum and she was like āSo they want you to throw up on the kids? listen to me, this is so so important: you've gotta get used to really giving it your 60% as a default. like don't half-ass it necessarily but try not to go over 70% or so of an ass. you'll feel better and live a happier more fulfilled life, and on the rare occasions where you do need to lock the fuck in you'll be able to pull off bullshit that the sad miserable wretches giving it their 100% can never dream of, because they're busy draining themselves dry and you have energy reserves to spare.

The first thing about Lieutenant Carson is that heās a dickhead.Ā
The second thing about Lieutenant Carson is that heās a dickhead.Ā
He gets to be a dickhead twice because weāre in a profession which attracts, near to its entirety, dickheads. To claim someone on this ship is a dickhead is to claim that some droplet of water is wet. Carson, though, is an anomaly. A trueĀ dickhead among dickheads, which would stand as two entire accomplishments if it were anything worth celebrating. More honestly, the only thing about Carson worth celebrating will be his funeral, assuming he has one, assuming heās not simply shot out the airlock one day.Ā
Itās not like heās surprising. Of course this job attracts dickheads. Itās self-selecting for a job whose process involves trashing your application if you have anyone in your life who could be mistaken for a loved one. A wife or children, or a girlfriend, or even one living parent whoās not completely estranged and jettisoned from your life. What you end up with is an enlistment of 90% dickheads with every flavor of anti-social affliction, half of whom are criminals riding things out on this ship until anyone who could have pinned them to their crime is long dead. The remaining 10% are the cultural hermits preserving some kind of dying ethos, and guys like me who just didnāt have anything anchoring them down at home.Ā Ā
And most unfortunately, Lieutenant Carson is now my dickhead.Ā
Mission details came through this morning, unwilling to spare me even the 5 minutes I wanted for my coffee to cool. Grating intercom, mess of unwashed bodies clustering the cafeteria. āNew Assignment Orders: Travel begins after evening Lights-Out. Duration is 4 months In Frame. Listen closely for Buddy assignments.āĀ
They didnāt tell us what weāre transporting. They never do. Some bastard on the ship would try to steal it if we knew.Ā
āWoo! 4 months!ā Dorian cheered from the far end of Table 3. Dorian was an absolute brick shithouse of a man, sloshing around a coffee mug filled to the brim with not coffee. He was about the only man whose drinking problem I considered a real problem, since it took three menās worth of alcohol to get him drunk. And he was drunk, always. ā300 more years to the hag!ā he toasted, to himself. Heād toasted a good 1,800 years to the hag. He got happier with each toasting.Ā
āDorian McGee, your partner is Eric Sampson.āĀ
Sampson made a curt little noise through his teeth. I was glad it wasnāt more than that, since I was seated beside Sampson, and Sampsonās breath stank like a dead rat before his morning coffee. It would still stink like a dead rat after the coffeeābut the cut of coffee made a meaningful difference.Ā Ā
āA bit of a brutish man, isnāt he?ā Sampson said, leaning in to conspire with me, and offering me a face-full of dead rat. I cut all breath from entering my nose, and nodded, and lifted my coffee to my face like hospital peppermint rub. Sampson was one of the ascetic cultural weirdos, whose company I preferred mostly because he was one of the few crew members not whittling something to a sharp point in secret. āAt least heās notāāĀ
āāMendoza, your partner is Garret Carson.āĀ
āāOh,ā Sampson concluded, as I choked on my coffee. I kept the reaction off my face. I prayed for all the world that they would issue a correction, and partner me with the dead rat in Sampsonās esophagus instead.Ā
They did not. Carson leered from the far end of Table 2, smiling shittily, in his deeply unserious manner. Carson could not be made serious, not by his superiors and not by a set of knuckles digging new holes between his teeth. Several shipmates had tried. Nothing could break his shitty spirit, and I can only be thankful no oneās grandmothers or pets die up here, since Iām positive Carson spent his life up until now laughing at funerals.Ā Ā
Carson and his shitty smile took my eye contact as invitationānot that heās the kind to wait for invitation to do anythingāand elbowed his wiry squirrely frame through men far bigger than him until he stood directly behind Sampson. He took Sampsonās untouched coffee, gulped down half of it in a single swig, and paid for it by offering Sampson the negative value of his shitty unserious smile. āAw Sampsy, I love when you make me coffee.āĀ
Sampson muttered a few things, which sounded mostly like disconnected stumbling thoughts too buried in rat breath to make out, and Sampson scooted himself away from the table. He looked around, until consigning himself to try to squeeze next to Dorian. Carson fell gaudily into Sampsonās open spot.Ā
āI fucking hate that pussy. I wanna rip all his limbs off and shove them up his ass and call it modern art.ā Carson tipped over what remained of Sampsonās coffee cup. Coffee dribbled to the floor. āBut I like you Mendoza. Iād lube you up before I shove anything up your ass.āĀ
Carson could fucking die. If for nothing other than the crime of cursing me to a coffee-less dick-cheese-smelling Sampson for the entire rest of the day.Ā
ā¦Ā
Mission buddies are also bunk mates. The one upside to having Carson as my bunk mate is that it puts me in the prime position to smother him in his sleep. Itās logistically possible. I have at least 50 pounds and 5 inches on the guy. I can picture him flailing like a wet noodle while I hold the pillow down. Anyone nearby would understand. I might get some high fives, maybe one of the smuggled e-cigs that turned to contraband after the meal-hall fire six In Frame months ago.Ā Ā
The downside to having Carson as my bunk mate is that it makes me the key suspect if Carson wakes up dead with a dozen synthetic feathers shoved down his throat.Ā Ā
So I just picture it. Fantasize about it. All the time. Really any time Carson opens his mouth to speak to me, which is constantly. Carson loves to hear himself talk. He loves to know heās being heard. He loves anything that gets a reaction.Ā
Itās been 2.5 In Frame months. More precisely itās been exactly 76 days of hearing everything Garret Carson has to say as my buddy. Iāve heard everything he hates about everyone, which includes me. Iāve heard every nasty thing heās said to the cafeteria staff, up to and including putting his hands on the staffer who ran out of keylime pie right before Carson reached him (āthe only edible fucking thingā which heās sort of right about). It wonāt get Carson fired, even if I tattle, even if he hadnāt already told anyone with ears about it.Ā
Iāve heard everything sexual Carson assures me heād do to Major Chelsey Kensington if he were to ever catch her alone. Itās juvenile, and dimwitted and moronic, and everything he comes up with smacks of some stupid 13-year-oldās fantasy. He cranks his shaft from the top bunk while he talks, and he shakes the entire fucking bedframe. I never answer him, and Iāve considered taking up fake snoring to make him think heās not keeping me awake. I know it wouldnāt work. The worst part about Garret Carson is he doesnāt even need an audience to be like this.Ā
Carson sits with me at all mealtimes, as mission buddies are required to do, and his fork spends more time in my plate than on his. Sampson sits morosely with Dorian, whose conversation is the only one loud enough for me to hear. (āDo you know HOW old?ā Dorian asks. ā2,000 years, yes, you told me already.ā ā2,003. As of this morning! Then 2,004, in five minutes from now! Another shitty year for her shitty dead bones to goāround the shitty dying sun!ā āYou know, my own civilizationās sun is dying.ā āAnd around and around and around and arouāā)Ā Ā
Carson is like a fungal infection. Heās like black mold in a cupboard. Heās like a pest problem the landlord wonāt fix which keeps you from having any friends over. Heās like bedbugs, and Iām diseased until this mission is over. Until Dorianās hag gets her whole 300 years.Ā
āUgh. Blugh. These peas are nasty.ā Carson is smearing his fork on my plate, leaving a long trail of pea-guts raked through my potatoes. āThey canāt fucking grow them right. They canāt fucking grow any shitty food on this shitty ship. If I crapped on your plate it would be an improvement.āĀ
Thereās a constant whir undercutting everything. Itās everywhere, and does not go away, and after the first 3 months of being driven fucking insane by it, you stop noticing it. Iāve been noticing it again, as itās often one of the only alternatives to listening to Carson.Ā
I forget the name of the thing making the whir, but it has āhyperspaceā in it.Ā Ā
āGot us busting our asses transporting a fucking billion dollars of fuck-all-who-knows-what, but they canāt fucking feed us anything edible.āĀ
The whir itself also has a name. Something to do with space shrinking, and infinite acceleration, and something else back when I cared enough to actually learn about the ship. Iāve since learned it doesnāt matter. In Frame time is all that matters, and getting paid every two weeks on the dot In Frame is all that matters. Itās good pay, have I mentioned? Itās really good pay.Ā Ā
āHey Carson, what are you planning to do when you retire?ā I ask, and for a brief glorious second Carson shuts the hell up. Probably out of surprise, because Iāve refused to address him directly until now.Ā
āOh, retire?āĀ
āWhere are you going to go?āĀ
Carson thinksāor does the closest thing to thinking which his mushed pea brain is capable of. He cracks wide his unserious grin and I think of a million ways to remove all his teeth.Ā
āIām gonna find some place real tribal. You know like, Oonga Boonga. And use all my money to make them make me their sex god.āĀ
A sex god with no teeth?Ā
āIf itās some primitive tribe, why would they give a fuck about Entente money?āĀ
āBecause itās money, and people love money,ā Carson answers, like Iām an idiot. I resist the urge to explain literally anything to him about intergalactic politics, because if I tried then I would in fact be the idiot for trying.Ā
āSure, people love money.āĀ
āWhat about you?āĀ
I miss a beat answering. I admittedly wasnāt expecting him to ask the question back, but knowing Carson and knowing his tendency to weaponize whatever information his greasy hands can pry from you, Iām not so stupid as to answer.Ā Ā
āDunno. Depends what places exist by then.āĀ
ā¦Ā
Sampson has started avoiding me. Ā
Itās probably not me heās avoiding. Itās probably Carson, like everyone else with a brain and working feet has been doing since the assignments were given. But Sampson has been the last hold-out. He always seems to bumble into my space, and somehow always seems surprised once Carson rears his head and hurls whatever verbal harassment heād been practicing in the mirror that morning. Sampson is kind of stupid, for a scholar, at least in a social way. Ā
But itās day 90 now, and Sampson has finally made himself scarce. Ā
I catch sight of him in the cafeteria, and his eyes bug, and his neck jostles a little like a gobbling turkey before he turns away from me, all weird limb movements and discombobulation. He scoots up against Dorian in some weird parody of a chick ducking under its brooding mother for protection. Dorian notices nothing weird because heās drunk, always. Ā
I get in line. Carsonās breath is on my shoulder. Itās replaced quickly with a whisper about how heās gonna fuck Major Kensington in her sleep when this mission is over. I grab my coffee and pasty oatmeal.Ā
Itās day 93, and I no longer see Sampson in the cafeteria. This also means I donāt see Dorian in the cafeteria. Sampson, being the ascetic weirdo he is, I can see skipping meals. Dorian, I cannot. Ā
Itās day 95, and Carson wakes me up. He does it by holding my nose, and I clock him in the face by pure, de-oxygenated instinct. Iām gasping for breath and spinning into consciousness as Carson rights himself standing at the side of my bed, nose dripping blood, smiling shittily in the low emergency lighting.Ā
āI got us a special little present,ā Carson announces, holding up something squarish, and indecipherable in the low light.Ā
I sit up with half a mind to punch him again. He wipes the blood from his nose, then wipes it on my sheets, and sits himself down on my bed. He cracks open the squarish thing, and itās a book.Ā
āAre you fucking literate?ā I ask, voice croaking.Ā
āItās Sampsonās dirty mags,ā Carson says, answering a very different question from what I asked. I blink to adjust to the lighting, and can only make out the tight, tiny scrawl of black ink filling each page Carson flips through.Ā
āWhat?āĀ
āHe was guarding them pretty tight. Got Dorian watching them too, but I bribed Dorian with all the alcohol theyāve been rationing me.ā Carson doesnāt drink. He loves acting like this makes him a godly person, somehow, despite the literally everything else. āSlipped this baby out easy.āĀ
Carson brandishes the book again, moreso in my direction. I look closer. Tight tight black ink, filling every page. I canāt read any of it.Ā
āIs that fucking... Sampsonās cultural tomes?ā I ask.Ā
āOne of āem,ā Carson answers, delighted.Ā
āWhy the fuck do you have his cultural tomes?ā I hate the bothered note in my voice. Because I donāt care, and I donāt want to be awake, and I donāt want to be engaging Garret Fucking Carson.Ā
āIām trying to educate myself. This is all thatās left of that poor poor culture that died 1,000 years ago.āĀ
(Last year, In Frame.)Ā
āGo the fuck back to sle--āĀ
I hear a shearing sound. Loud, amplified by the ambient silence around us, undercut with the silent whir of the hyper-thing. ShhhhhhhhhHHHHHHHRRIIP. I look. The page is torn vertically, right down the middle. Carson holds the separated portion and rips it again, length-wise. SSshhhhhhiiriiipp.Ā
Paper confetti rains. Carson flips the pages. āBoring fucking culture. Got like two million fucking pages in this thing but he didnāt think to preserve even one bit of porn. I donāt even know what the naked girls on his planet look like. Figures Sampson wouldnāt preserve any of that, considering heās a fa--āĀ
I kick Carson hard in the back, hard enough to boot him off the bed. Thereās agitation in my veins, but Iām staring at Carsonās shitty unserious smile staring up gummily from the floor, and I canāt let him win. I canāt let him win.Ā
āDo that somewhere else,ā I say, and I roll over, dragging my covers over myself. āIām going the fuck back to sleep.āĀ
ā¦Ā
Itās day 96. Sampson appears in the cafeteria, and he moves like a meercat. Short bursts of agitated movement, all hand-wringing and buggy-eyes. He looks sleepless. He looks dog-tired. He looks my way, and wrings his hands more before turning away from me, away from the wide and deeply unserious smile of Garret Carson looming over my shoulder. Ā
Dorian isnāt with him. Someone is supposed to yell at him for that, but it wonāt be me.Ā
Itās day 98, and Sampson can only dart around meercattishly for so long. His frantic eye-bugginess is morose. His hand-wringing is gray and tired. Iāve watched him, from a distance, upturn about every seat and tile in this shipāat least every one he can touch without getting yelled at, and a few he canāt. He makes the mistake of eye contact with me a few more times, and it lingers now. Like he wants to approach. That little flame of desire dies every time his eyes shift to Carson, ever the leech on my shoulder.Ā
Itās day 111. I have 9 more days of Carson, and I have not seen Sampson in a week. Dorian shuffles through the cafeteria alone sometimes, and he does get yelled at for appearing separate from his assigned buddy. But Dorian is drunk, and is an entire refrigerator of a man, and so there is little people can do about him.Ā
Sampsonās tome has long since turned to pulp in Carsonās corner of our room, and Carson is bored again. I can see it in his eyes.Ā
ā¦Ā
Itās day 112. They tell us something in the morning about running behind schedule, and a pit stop for a very particular kind of hyper-fuel, and an ultra-hyper-hyper-something-or-other for the remaining week. I only pay attention to the āremaining weekā part of it, because it reminds me that I will be free of Garret Carson in a weekās time.Ā
Thatās a slight lie. Iāll still be on the ship with him. But importantly I will be entirely within my right to stay the hell away from him. I can get a coffee without him, and piss without him, and that alone sounds like heaven.Ā
The announcement continues. Weāve gotten another mission booked back-to-back, set to start the moment our current one ends. This elicits a few murmurs, mostly from the people who are more sensitive than me to the hyper-whatever and were banking on a little un-hyper downtime. I donāt care about them. I only hear the next part.Ā
5 months In Frame mission. Buddy assignments are to stay the same.Ā
I feel frozen. My heart jumps at what was surely a mistake, a bad dream, something I can blink myself away from and find myself lying in bed with Carson snoring above me. Ā
I feel Carsonās breath on my shoulder. His deeply shitty smile is boring into me. I wonāt look at him, but he is real. He is entirely real.Ā
āWoohoo!ā Dorian toasts, to no one. āAnother 400 years to the hag!āĀ
ā¦Ā
Itās the evening of day 112, and weāve touched down on an anchor planet to refuel. Itās our version of an evening, anyway, since this planet is drifting in a starless system and the In Frame clocks have declared it lights-out. Itās weird to know weāre hunkered down to something. Itās weird to share a Frame with a planet. Itās weird to hear the new whir of fuel glugging into the ship.Ā
Itās too weird, and I canāt sleep.Ā
Iām still awake when Carson drops down from his top bunk and slips out the door.Ā
I should really view this as a blessing, to be given some unknown number of minutes without Garret Carsonās presence, at a time when I could believably feign ignorance of the entire thing. But itās about as restful as losing sight of the spider on your ceiling. Ā
So I slip out of bed. I put on my shoes and I ease our creaky door open. Thereās no bathroom to check, since the shitter is in our shared room, but I prod open the shower room on the off-chance Carson was possessed with the desire for some kind of 3am (In Frame) scrub-down.Ā
The shower room is empty. Ā
I check the cafeteria. I check the rec lounge. I check the library, not that Garret Carson has ever once set foot in there. I turn back, and shuffle through a few more halls, and even consider waking up Major Kensington to report my partner missing and then go the hell back to bed.Ā
Thereās a strip of yellow light wrapping the edge of a cracked-open door.Ā
I curse under my breath, as I was just growing attached to the idea of never finding Carson.Ā
I approach it, and my rotten hunch is correct. Itās the door leading to the suit locker room, containing all the suits custom-tailored to crew members with outer ship maintenance as an assignable duty. Both Carson and I have the training, which largely consists of being the monkey with a toolbox, sent out into deep space on a rope, while an engineer in your earpiece instructs you step by step what to do. (The engineer is too valuable to send out as the monkey on the rope.)Ā
But I know with utmost certainty Carson has not been assigned to outer ship duty, because I have not been assigned to outer ship duty. I hiss through my teeth, and I step forward, and I place my hand on the door.Ā
Some airy breathy noise sounds out from behind me. It makes my neck hair stand on end. I would almost consider being relieved, on the possibility that itās Carson, back from pissing in Sampsonās closet, and that the cracked-open door was mere coincidence.Ā
The rat-breath smell hits me next, and I know itās not Carson.Ā
I turn, eye to eye in the low light with Sampson, who looks far more ghoulish bottom-lit. Heās sleepless and gray and doing a very good job of passing for a ghost haunting the ship.Ā
āSampson,ā I say.Ā
āMendoza! I um--! I thought I heard something,ā Sampson says quickly, and stinkily, as if he were the one who had just been caught with his hand on the locker room door.Ā
āSame. I think Carson snuck outside. Iām dragging his ass back in.āĀ
āOh... Oh!ā Sampson says, as though taking a moment to process what was said. āWe should... You shouldnāt... Iāll alert Major Kensington, and she will--āĀ
āDonāt worry about it,ā I say. āKensingtonāll probably just yell at me for losing track of my buddy and send me outside to grab him.ā Thatās a lie. Garret Carson is outside the ship. Itās a world different from losing track of your buddy in the cafeteria.Ā
Sampson probably knows this is a lie, because heās smart. But he doesnāt know what to say back to me, because heās dumb. His gray knuckles wring together.Ā
āDid um... is um... Sorry, speaking of Carsonā I was wonderingāDid Lieutenant Carsonāsince you share a roomāif youāve seenāAt any point in the last few weeks did Lieutenant Carson--āĀ
āHe took your tome, yeah. He shredded it.āĀ
The convincing ghost of Eric Sampson manages to lose an extra shade of color from his face. āShredded?āĀ
āGo back to bed, okay.āĀ
I step inside, and close the door on Sampsonās face.Ā
ā¦Ā
The suit fits less snug than the last time I wore it for ship maintenance. Itās disconcerting. Every inch of skin not touching suit feels like a nakedness doomed to shred up in the vacuum of space. Thatās dramatic. These suits maintain a constant pressure, and they scream like hell at the first detection of a leak. The planet outside has an atmosphere. Itās way less dangerous than outer ship maintenance. Itās just been a while since I wore this suit, and Iām tired, and I hate Garret Carson.Ā
So I do hesitate, I guess, and my hand is clammy, I guess, once Iāve entered the exit code, and scanned my badge, and ensured the airlock door back into the ship is vacuum-shut behind me. Thereās only out, now. And thereās only me.Ā
I open the door, and the pneumatic hiss is deafening (I did not miss that part of the job). Thereās a ladder, already dropped, which vanishes outside the little emergency sphere of light that emanates from the exit door. Itās at least 30 feet down, judging by where the shadows drop off. It would not be extended if there were not already a shipmate down there.Ā
I drop down with the ladder. I ballpark it at 35 feet until my soles touch down. Ā
Thereās a wind that whips by, and nearly sweeps my footing from under me before Iāve gotten my bearings. So I anchor myself to the ladder once more, and breathe, and wait out the roar of wind whistling past my helmet. Ā
Atmosphere. What a fucking concept. Ā
I step, and in the dim ship lighting I see what might perhaps be footprints, or what might be the idle artistic musings of the wind. But if I were both Carson and an idiot, it feels like the direction I would go.Ā
āCarson!ā I call. If thereās atmosphere, thereās probably sound travel.Ā
I walk, and I walk. Iāve left the dim light of the ship, yet the ambient glow around my feet never quite vanishes. Thereās something ever so slightly luminous in the soil. A planet without a system star which has found its own means of producing light, reddish and subtle, but present none the less. The ship falls farther away, but I donāt let it entirely out of sight.Ā
There are twirling tendrils of plant life, meaty and thick, which crawl and creep along the soil. They donāt go up, as thereās no sun worth reaching toward. Instead they ooze into the soil, tying themselves with whatever feeds the glow. Perhaps they are more fungus than plants. Perhaps the distinction is meaningless here. There is a rustle here, a skitter there, an occasional pivot or bounce in the shape of the soil which suggests a sort of animal life. Itās not cold here. The planetās core is molten, and near enough the surface to radiate heat upward like a hot spring. The crust is thin, and what isnāt molten is rich with oil. The planet is not populated. Itās a refueling pitstop for deep space journeys, once in an eon.Ā
āCarson!āĀ
Itās quiet here. Thereās no whir of the ship. Ā
Something presses my neckline. It hits fast, locks into precise pressure pointsāpress, shove, tug, turn. I gaspāor maybe I yelpāand shoot away. My mind goes haywire with the instant panic response of recognizing the detachment protocol which separates my helmet from my suit. My hand flies to cover my mouthĀ
And bonks right into my still-attached helmet.Ā
The helmet canāt be detached like that, because it needs to be myself doing the detachment. The pressure points on the suit only respond if pressed alongside buttons within my own glove. But it felt real. The panic was sure as hell real. Like being shoved from behind while on a tightrope.Ā
The adrenaline has already flashed through my bloodstream, and Iām trembling.Ā
Carson is laughing.Ā
I take a swipe at him, and he ducks my clumsy aim, still laughing, still heaving with his own mirth. Ā
āRelax, dickhead, itās breathable.āĀ
I still myself, though breath still fogs my helmet and my hands still shake. Carson is standing in front of me. His eyes are like iridescent beetles in the luminance of the soil. His helmet is gone, and heās breathing.Ā
āI saw the fuel guy take his helmet off out here,ā Carson says. āItās oxygen out here. Itās like, extra oxygen. I feel kinda high. You should try too, Mendoza.āĀ
I donāt.Ā
āCome the hell back to the ship.āĀ
āAw, did you miss me?āĀ
āGet back on the ship before--āĀ
āBefore what? Whoās gonna do anything?āĀ
I stare him down, and I stare down his shitty smile and the red glint in his eyes. Ā
āYou left the fucking ship to get high on oxygen? If the ship leaves--āĀ
āOh better. So much better. Mendoza youāre gonna shit yourself once you know what I know.ā Carson bobs and he steps. He gets in close to me, lit red from beneath. The whipping winds sweep his straw hair back and forth. āDāyou know what weāre transporting?āĀ
āI donāt care.āĀ
āCuz Iām gonna steal it.āĀ
I miss a beat.Ā
āNo youāre not. Get back on the ship and Iāll pretend I never heard that.āĀ
āOh but you did hear that. Cuz I told you. I was actually coming back to get you, but like a good mission buddy you came and found me.āĀ
āI found you to throw you the fuck back on the ship,ā I answer. My patience is beyond thin. āIām not risking my payday because you--āĀ
āOh this is a HUGE payday. More than youāll make in a million Frame years on that disgusting fucking ship.ā Carson is moving in that squirrely way, or perhaps more like a collie, circling me and yet pulling me closer. āBut I need to loosen one of the escape pods to do it, and they fixed the busted shackle I found during last maintenance so actually I canāt get it out on my own. The podās on a safety lock.āĀ
Carsonās shitty smile persists. Heās too close now.Ā
āSo you want me to be the second badge.āĀ
āItās gotta be you. The second thumb-and-badge needs Kensingtonās girl scout do-gooder merit badge. You got that for licking her clit didnāt you?āĀ
āWhy do you think Iām gonna help you?āĀ
āCuz weāre friends.āĀ
I turn my heel on Carson. I only care about the ship winking in the distance.Ā
āAnd because Iām gonna give you half.āĀ
I pause, now. My boot sinks into the glowing sand.Ā Ā
āHalf of what?āĀ
āThe treasure weāre transporting. I know what it is. I know where weāre keeping it. I know how to escape with it.āĀ
I keep walking. āIām going to bed.āĀ
āItās the remains of Sampsonās culture,ā Carson barks after me. āLiterally a civilization worth of wealth compacted into what fits on a ship. Sampsonās a stupid fucker and he said too much to me one day, and his fucking book confirmed it. A civilization of wealth, Mendoza, and all of them are fucking dead. We can just take it.āĀ
āNo, we canāt, because someoneās expecting it.āĀ
āOh boo hoo, you think the king of Fuckshit World living in a galaxy 300 lightyears away from Sampsonās stupid dead people actually deserves it? Instead of us whoāve been busting our asses transporting it?āĀ
I pause. The glimmer in Carsonās eyes is stronger.Ā
āWe lost 300 years on this stupid journey. Transporting this shit. Your fucking childhood home is 300 years more rotted into the dirt. Because cushy fuckers who would never dare leave their own fucking Acceleration Frame hire us to do it. This trip cost US. Not them. WE deserve that shit.āĀ
āI signed up for this job because I donāt give a fuck how rotted my childhood home is or how extra-dead my grandmother will be. If you didnāt know that going into this then thatās on you.āĀ
ā50% split. And once weāre gone from here, you never have to see me again.ā Carsonās stupid shitty unserious smile has vanished. And this admittedly shuts me up for at least a second. Itās weird to see him like this. Itās uncomfortable.Ā
āYou fucking hate me, right?ā Carson continues. āIf we go back to that ship, itās another fucking half a year of you and me being besties. So steal this shit with me, and then never ever see me again.āĀ
I hesitate. I flex my fingers in my gloves. Another half-year of Carson sounds like a prison sentence, like a vice clamp around my throat, like a fate worse than hell.Ā
āHow do I know youāll actually give me half?ā I ask.Ā
āBecause you can wrestle it from me if you want. Youād fuck me over in a fight. You could take more than half if you want. Not like I could stop you.āĀ
āYou could have a gun.āĀ
āPat me down, Mission Buddy.āĀ
He spreads his arms. The space suit spreads with him. The luminescence lights him like phoenix wings. Ā
I stare at him, and I hate Lieutenant Carson all over again, because Iāve decided heās being serious. And I hate him even more than before, because thereās a part of me. A part of me. Which thinks heās right.Ā
It would be so nice to get off the ship.Ā
It would be nice to settle somewhere that has plantlife, and water, and atmosphere. Wildlife. A sun that rises and sets. I wouldnāt even care how long or short that sun-tracked day lasts, if it means never saying In Frame again.Ā
It would be nice to experience time, again.Ā
ā...Fine then,ā I tell him, and Carsonās face lights up like Christmas.Ā
āI knew youād get it! I love you Mendoza. I could kiss you.āĀ
āDonāt.āĀ
āI wonāt. Iām not Sampson.āĀ
And the mention of Sampsonās name jolts something just slightly beneath my skin. All gray-faced and ghost-like and pathetic. Sampson has never been good at the ship. Heās not like me who doesnāt care about time spinning away on my home planet, or Dorian who loves every year deader his ex-wife gets. Ā
āI know which cargo lock the haul is in. The fuel is near it and I slipped a shim under the lock when the maintenance guy went in to hook up the refueler. We only need badge access to get back there and then if I loosen the shim we can--āĀ
āWe should do that part last, right?āĀ
āHuh?ā Carson asks.Ā
āBecause of the alarms,ā I elaborate. āOnce we open the treasure hold, itās gonna trigger the alarms.āĀ
āYeah, and we fill our bags and run.āĀ
āAnd the escape pod.āĀ
āWhat about it?āĀ
āItāll still be locked up.āĀ
Carson pauses at this. His unserious grin splits wide again, right back in place. āSee this is why I love you Mendoza. Brains of the operation. So we get the pod ready first, then pocket all the treasure we can, then dip.āĀ
Carson pivots off track just slightly, to the rear hull of the ship.Ā
āI knew you were smart. If Sampsonās people chose you as their scholar maybe they wouldnāt have fucking perished.ā Ā
āLike hell. Iād rather dig graves than live as some kind of encyclopedia monk.āĀ
Eric Sampson is part of the cargo haul,Ā I realize in almost an offhand way. Our cargo is all the preserved culture that remains of his people and Sampson is a relic right alongside it all. Itās not new for dying cultures to do this. Sampson isnāt even the first shipmate weāve had whose job is simply to outlive the death of a people for as long as possible, keeping alive customs and knowledge and memories like the last breathing ember of a doused flame. Ā
But Sampson stands out to me maybe because heās been the worst at it. Sloppy and forgetful, a manic studier of cultural information that seems to slip through his brain like water. Too often Iāve watched him stumble over facts and mix up dates and work himself into a panic over a forgotten monarchās name.Ā
Maybe itās because most of the other cultural hermits were second or third generation, tasked to memorize a culture theyād never seen. Sampson left while his culture was still bleeding. It died overnight, sometime last year, and had been dead a few good years before Sampson even woke up. Iāve never quite seen him recover.Ā Ā
āFucking Sampson of all people. What an absolute fucker,ā Carson continues, almost singsong. āI hate him. Heās a cunt. My only regret is leaving before I ever got to punt him in the balls.āĀ
Carson sets his badge to the pod lock. Itās a solid, unbroken section of external ship hull, with only thin fissures in the body betraying the notion that something opens, that something reveals. The little shimmer of light remains yellow.Ā
āOh, right,ā Carson says. He lifts his free hand and sets his gloved thumb to the sensor beside his badge. Itās a double-safety measure: thumb for biometrics, to guard against a stolen badge, and a badge, to guard against a stolen corpse.Ā
Carsonās thumb is read though his glove, andĀ a green light clicks to life under Carsonās touch. The twin sensor waits for mine.Ā
āDid the tome say whatās in the cargo hold, exactly?ā I ask.Ā
āOh just you know, literally everything of value to his people. Before the last of them bit it, they gathered it all up. Like emptied out their museums and banks and shit. Sent it off with Sampson. Itās all shrunk down into cargo pills so a wheel palette should be enough to nab them and run. Weāll need to find a planet with a Depacker but most galaxies have had those for literally like 500 years, so like since the last 6 months. Pros of being on this shitty ship.āĀ
āSo Sampson knows about the cargo.āĀ
āAbsolutely. Sure does.āĀ
āAnd when weāre gone in the morning, heāll know what happened?āĀ
ā100%. Ah!ā Carson kicks his legs in a little dance of mirth, a little tick of uncontained joy. āAh!! Actually I have TWO regrets, and the second one is that I wonāt be able to see Sampsonās face when he wakes up tomorrow and learns what we ransacked. Oh heāll kill himself. Heāll definitely kill himself. I wish I could see it. Dorianās not gonna stop him when he kicks his chair and starts dangling from the ceiling tiles.āĀ
Carson nods once more toward the hull. Ā
āCome on, give it your badge.āĀ
I press my thumb to the sensor. I pat my suit with my free hand, and I pat the front pocket, and the back pocket, and my breast and neckline.Ā
āMy badge is still in the ship,ā I say.Ā
Carson clicks his tongue, agitated. āRight after I called you the brains, Mendoza.āĀ
āI came out here to haul your ass back inside. I wasnāt expecting to have to open anything under badge-lock. Iām still in my fucking pajamas under this suit.āĀ
āWell you can buy a million sets of whatever the hell clothes you want once we have this cargo. Go inside and get your badge. Be fast. Iām getting sand in my eyes.āĀ
I ease my hand off the scanner. I round the ship, the steady crunch and hiss of sand compacting and shifting beneath my boot. I reach the ladder, and methodically, almost puppet like, I climb it. I hardly feel like Iām the one climbing. I feel like a witness. I feel like time isnāt passing around me.Ā
I get to the top. I pop open the door to the airlock. Ā
I pat my pocket with my badge inside. Ā
I look through the coupled door, the ones which open back into the ship when the pressure has equalized, and through the circular window I almost expect to see Eric Sampsonās shitty gray sad face.Ā
There is no one there. There is no one awake. The hiss of the refueling has ceased.Ā
I make no sound.Ā
I haul the ladder back up behind me.Ā
ā¦Ā
Dawn breaks with no sun. The whir of the ship is back, and itās louder than before. It trembles the frame of the ship in a way Iāve never felt before. Itās in hyper-hyper-something mode, and we are fighting to make up time that doesnāt really exist this way for anyone but us. Ā
I do not go to get coffee. I phone in to the office that Iām sick, and that Iām quarantining. They mark my chart as such, and all that really means is they bring my meals to me, and they donāt count my head at morning count. And also that, if I DO show my face before getting medical clearance, they might punt my ass into solitary. Sickness doesnāt contain well on a ship like this, so the best they can do is contain you well.Ā
They send two meals, every mealtime. My fork spends as much time in Carsonās plate as it does in mine.Ā
The days slip by slowly. On day 120, the whir of the hyper-hyper-thing vanishes. It vanishes all together. Weāve set down somewhere. They tell me over the intercom that a doctor is being sent to my room. When I open it, he is no one from the ship. Heās garbed strangely, and accompanied by Major Kensington who keeps her distance several paces back.Ā
The doctor speaks, and he speaks through a translator mask.Ā
āIām Doctor Zhhghghgbebrgh,ā the translator mouth-piece chokes. āYou are not feeling well. You are Lieutenant Mendoza and Lieutenant Carson?āĀ
I cock my head. āWell, yeah usually Lieutenant Carson is in this room. But heās been staying elsewhere because Iām sick.āĀ
I force myself to keep my focus on the doctor. But itās Kensington I watch through my peripheral vision. She stiffens, instantly.Ā
āWhat?āĀ
ā¦Ā
Itās a mix-up. Itās an oversight. Itās clearly a case of broken protocol. The ship has been searched more thoroughly than Sampson was ever allowed to do for his missing tome. Iām sitting in Kensingtonās office, as are a few sergeants, and the doctor, and just about every shipmate who ever breathed the same air as Garret Carson. (āIāve been given medical clearance,ā I tell each of them, one after the other, at the stink eye they offer me when ordered to pack themselves into the office with me.)Ā
Kensington is pacing. Kensington is pulling at the patch of hair she pulls whenever sheās stressed. Itās worried into a slight bald spot.Ā
āNo one saw Garret Carson that night?ā Kensington asks, again, like the answer might change.Ā
āI went to bed with a fever already. Thought maybe it was atmosphere sickness but I was zonked out of my mind by the next morning. So no, I really donāt know what time Carson left the room.āĀ
Kensington is worrying her thumb through documents Iāve already seen, pulled records from that night. Thereās a single ping matching Carsonās badge ID against the escape pod sensor at 3:12am In Frame.Ā
There are a few thousand additional pings matching Carsonās badge ID against the escape pod sensor, ranging from 3:31am to 4:47am, at which point the ship engaged liftoff. Ā
āNo one... else?ā Kensington asks. Ship cameras are useless. The hyper-hyper thing amps up the magnetic field so strongly it fries even the best tapes.Ā
Sheās running numbers in her head. Itās been eight In Frame days since Carson vanished. It would take another eight to double back, and thatās only if we could muscle throughĀ hyper-hyper-speed, and it doesnāt matter at all, actually. Because no matter how much we move faster, in reality itās just the time dilation getting worse. From the resting planetās frame, thereās nothing we can do to get there faster. The limit of lightspeed is a bitch.Ā
Iāve run the numbers in my head as well. At our normal hyper-cadence, we move 938 seconds per second. Even if Carson were only 8 days away at that cadence, even if he were only a 16-day round trip away, heās nowhere close to that.Ā
Heās not In Frame. And 16 days to rescue Garret Carson is 41 years.Ā
And whether it were 16, or 8, or 4, there was never any turning back for Garret Carson. Because sacrificing 41 years of resting revenue, or 20 or 10, was never going to be the companyās decision. Ā
Kensington pulls on her hair more. I wonder if I ought to tell her about Carsonās graphic sexual fantasies.Ā If it might make her feel better.
āLieutenant Sampson,ā she says. Thereās a rock and shuffle of the ship. Depacked cargo unloading. A cultureās worth of treasure being unloaded for the king of FuckShit World, or whoever exactly Sampsonās people had bequeathed it to in their last will and testament. āLieutenant Sampson, youād said you thought you heard Lieutenant Carson that night?āĀ
I glance to Sampson. Some of the color has returned to his face, a man only half the ghost of the person Iād seen in front of the air lock that night.Ā
āOh. Um, yes, Maāam! I did um, I did maybe, I think. I heard something that night. But. I mean. I only walked down the hall. I was having trouble sleeping and I walked down the hall but, that was it.āĀ
āSo you never saw Lieutenant Carson?āĀ
āNo.āĀ
āAnd you didnāt see anyone else?āĀ
āNo,ā Sampson says, and Iām afraid for a moment he might look at me. He doesnāt. His face is rigid. It gives nothing away. āI didnāt see a single soul that night.āĀ
