I, Raafat Sabry Matar , 38 years old A father of three from Gaza lives in a dilapidated tent. am writing to you in dire need of urgent medical treatment for [A synovial sarcoma (also known as malignant synovioma is a rare form of cancer which occurs primarily in the extremities of the arms or legs, often in proximity to joint capsules ], a life-threatening condition. Despite my efforts to find ways to cover the costs of treatment, I am finding it extremely difficult to secure the necessary funds for both treatment and medication.

That night, from the very beginning, was like hell. The warplanes did not stop bombing the houses in the area where we were.

We would hear the thunderous sound of a missile, and in the next second we would entrust our souls to God a thousand times.

The sound of shrapnel falling in front of the house and hitting its door terrified us, making us brace for the explosion that would take all our lives.

The night continued with heavy missiles and deafening explosions. After midnight, the bombardment intensified, and shells rained down on us like rain — except this time, the shells were being fired directly at us. It felt like a nightmare.

Suddenly, the house lit up with the flames of the shells, and the sound of shattering glass sent shock through us. We had to move away — far away — from the front door because the shells were heading straight toward us.

We found no place to hide except the bathroom. I rushed inside with my children, all of us trembling from fear and cold. We covered our ears with our fingers to try to block out the terrifying explosions. Pieces of the bathroom wall fell before our eyes, and all we could think of in that moment was that the house was surely going to collapse on us.

We kept repeating the prayers we had memorized. Did we cry? Yes, my children cried a lot — but I scolded them gently: “Why do you cry? God is here. Don’t forget that.” Their tears slowly stopped, and they felt a strange calm that defied the fear around us.

We remained like that, consumed by fear and waiting — yes, waiting. We were waiting for death.

Why couldn’t it just come without making us wait? Couldn’t we die without suffering this way?

The call for Fajr prayer came while we were still in our place. By then, the explosions had quieted down a little, except for the sound of the fire burning outside the house, caused by the shells.

We agreed to step out and try to sleep a little, to rest after such a tormenting night. But I had barely reached the mattress when I heard a sound like a huge engine…

I looked at my eldest son and asked him in shock, “Is that… a tank?”

His doubtful expression turned into certainty. My eyes widened, and we fled once again to the bathroom. We couldn’t believe a tank was right outside the house — but its deafening sound, its gunfire, and the shells it launched confirmed it.

A large number of tanks, bulldozers, and armored vehicles passed by. They moved only a meter at a time before firing dozens of shells and pouring streams of fire everywhere. We stayed completely silent so they wouldn’t notice and kill us. It was broad daylight.

Suddenly, a massive explosion shook the house, plunging it into darkness. We had become the target.

I swallowed my scream and told my children we had to run upstairs — the men stayed in the upper floor while we were on the ground floor. We ran with terrifying speed, our hearts about to stop.

The men made space for us, and we all squeezed into a tiny room. We remained trapped there until the afternoon, terrified that night would fall and the horrors of the previous night would repeat — perhaps even worse.

We called the Red Crescent for evacuation, but they told us they couldn’t reach us while Israeli forces were in the area.

My child looked at me with eyes full of tears.

“Will night come and we’re still here?”

I told him — with a certainty I don’t know where I found —

“Trust in God. We prayed a lot. God will protect us.”

I comforted them, then went downstairs to get something. As I neared the door, I heard the sound of a man and woman walking in the street and talking.

I ran upstairs at lightning speed, breathless, saying, “There are people outside! Maybe we can escape!”

Everything happened fast. We went down immediately, taking only a few essential things we couldn’t leave behind.

We ran — ran without knowing where to go. Our only concern was to get far away from the area.

Above us, hundreds of surveillance and warplanes were flying. In front of us, tanks, soldiers, and armored vehicles. Around us, snipers waiting for any movement to shoot. But — perhaps by some divine wisdom — they did not see us.

We walked a very long distance until we finally reached a house that sheltered us.

Yes — we survived.

We survived, but we are still trapped in that night.

We survived, but we are still afraid of the dark.

We survived, but the smallest sound still terrifies us.

We survived, but we still cannot believe we survived.

I remember it as if it were yesterday.

I want to erase it from my memory — but I cannot.

Every night, I listen to my children shiver under thin blankets, and I hold them close, trying to give them some warmth… but the cold is stronger than all of us.

Since we lost our home, this worn-out tent is all we have.

The wind strikes it every night as if trying to tear away what little is left of our lives.

My husband grows weaker day by day, and I have nothing but a heart that breaks for all of them.

We desperately need help—blankets, food, a better tent… anything that can protect my children from this merciless winter.

Your kindness could be the reason they sleep tonight feeling warm and safe.

The world says the war is “over,” but tell me how is it over when my mother still wakes up gasping for breath? When every night I pray she survives until morning because I can’t afford the device that keeps her heart alive?

We lost our home. We lost everything. And now I’m watching the person who gave me life slowly fade in front of me —because we have nothing left but hope.

“The state came to massacre, it wasn’t a [police] operation. They came directly to kill, to take lives,” one woman in Penha Complex told the AFP news agency.

“There are people who have been executed, many of them shot in the back of the head, shot in the back. This cannot be considered public safety,” said 36-year-old resident and activist Raul Santiago.

Brazil’s Justice Minister Ricardo Lewandowski said President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is “horrified” by the scale of fatalities and surprised that such an operation went ahead without prior knowledge of the federal government.

I’d sincerely appreciate it if non-Brazilians reblogged this. Media outlets all over the world (and especially in my homeland) will try to sweep this under the rug but the horror has spread nationwide. We call it chacina for a reason.

We are facing a catastrophic disaster. I know I know a lot is going on, my heart is so heavy for Sudan and El Fashir, also for Palestine (Gaza and the West Bank), Congo and too many other places. The islands in the tropics are largely ignored during hurricane season though and we are on the brutal receiving end of climate change when we barely contribute to it.
