every western communist should read The German Communist Resistance 1933-1945 imo. short and very concise, well-supported historical research. destroys the common myth that german communists were unable to operate after losing their leadership in 1933, gets much deeper into the details of the later stages of the conflict between the KPD and SPD, eminently relevant tactically and strategically for anyone concerned about fascism today. the german communists and supportive workers of this era have been killed twice—first by the nazis, and secondly by a post-war historiography that has erased them while rehabilitating fascists and collaborators in the name of anti-communism.
Just finished this, and it's a very interesting book. Infuriating to read how about how many Communists got tortured and executed because of their resistance, for them just to be written out of history, while the Nazis who condemned them and killed them went on to run West Germany after the war.
I found the introduction (by someone else) a bit annoying, why are you telling me about Biden and Trump, to introduce a book about German Communists, written by a French person? but that's just a small gripe.
NOT NATURALLY BLONDE: (L) A photo of Monroe taken by David Conover in 1944 at the Radioplane Company; (R) Monroe posing with actors from Lui
By John Green
Despite the image cultivated by the misogynist Hollywood publicity machine, Marilyn Monroe was a highly politicized woman, a performer of sharp comic intelligence, a canny architect of her own image, and a woman who reshaped the possibilities for female stardom on screen.

Soviet child prisoners of the 6th Finnish concentration camp in Petrozavodsk. During the occupation of Soviet Karelia by the Finns, six concentration camps were created in Petrozavodsk to contain local Russian-speaking residents. Camp No. 6 was located in the area of the Transshipment Exchange, it held 7,000 people. The photo was taken after the liberation of Petrozavodsk by Soviet troops on June 28, 1944.
This picture was presented as part of the evidence at the Nuremberg trials of war criminals.
The girl who is second from the column on the right in the photo - Klavdia Nyuppieva - many years later published her memoirs:
"I remember how people fainted from the heat in the so-called bathhouse, and then they were doused with cold water. I remember the disinfection of the barracks, after which there was a buzzing in the ears, and many had a nosebleed, and that steam room, where all our rags were processed with great “dilience”. One day the steam room burned down, depriving many people of their last clothes."
