My very favorite observation I have ever heard anyone make about this episode: holy shit, this is so definitely a plan geared towards the last version of the Doctor the Master had met–because it would have worked SO WELL on Ten. SO WELL. Barely-controlled desire to conquer the universe? Check. Expressed through insistence on smiting bad guys and being the savior of the lesser beings? CHECK. Needs the gun held to his (or his favorite planet’s) head so he can tell himself he really had no choice? FUCKING CHECK. She would’ve had Ten hook, line, and sinker.

I have to wonder. and excuse me for this because realistically, it's not that much to do with him in comparison to the doctor, but. I have to wonder how the master felt about what happened with millennia and rallon. as koschei and after he became the master. I mean, first of all, he was too chicken to actually go with the doctor (paraphrased but: scratching his arm and avoiding eye contact). but then afterwards the deca is broken. and he doesn't even show up to the doctor's trial!

on top of this is the fact we know the master recently lost to the toymaker in the show (tooth master...). that's utterly fascinating to me. we're not going to get elaboration on that, I'd imagine, but that is SO interesting. assuming that rallon and millennia were also his friends, he met the entity that killed them & the cause of his friend group being split & part of the doctor's advent (as a concept). and then he LOST. which figures, actually, but the fact he lost when the doctor has won multiple times against the toymaker... ohhh boy. his complexes will be complexing. much to consider...
