I’m not sure, but I think that tree might be haunted 👀 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This started in my sketchbook and became a painting ~ painting twisty trees is so soothing!
it probably looks a little pretentious to ruin a simple aesthetic post by digging up sources and slapping them in a relatively wordy reblog. but ive been thinking about how so much art is drawn and posted lately thats redraws of other things or drawing OCs in outfits— and how rarely those pieces credit the source of the pose/composition/outfit/etc. which imo feels antithetical to the movement against AI especially with regards to it stealing the work of others!
and yes, a lot of these things when its statues or leyendecker etc are probably in the public domain now or whatever. but even in that case i think its still worth it to credit your inspirations and encourage that curiosity for several reasons. one being that not everyone has the knowledge you do, and not everyone who sees your redraw is going to know its a redraw! and in the case of outfit redraws, how many times are those sexy outfits everyones drawing their oc in something an independent designer makes and then goes on to have their name completely removed from because it blew up in fandom spaces? sometimes its things that independent creators are actually selling that could really benefit from having their name attached to the redraws!!
as artists and as art enjoyers its important to acknowledge other artists that inspire us and to dig in in a more active and thoughtful way to appreciate those inspirations. i truly believe that we only stand to benefit from this. moving forward i want to actually compile/post my moodbords and include sources on them for my own reference and yours, no matter how old or contemporary the art/photograph/fashion design/whatever is.
tumblr is an awesome site for doing this honestly because we have readmores or even just hyperlinks where you can keep your little resource scrapbook if youre worried about aesthetics or whatever. the post format that integrates text + photos + hyperlinks in whatever arrangement you want encourages art habits like this. for other places its more restrictive and i can understand just wanting your art to be front and center, esp on bluesky or something similar that forces the grid style when you post multiple images, but in the case of a feed like that you can just… pop your sources into a reply!
wait sorry another thing. being curious about art is also a great way to find out if youre about to reblog an ai generated image. if youve researched klimts work and dug in deep to what hed previously done, youre more likely to have spotted that ai generated “i am not drunk” thing that circulated last winter attributed to him and recognized it as ai, etc etc etc. if you try to be aware of that sort of thing you can build skills to counter it that are based more in appreciation for the original artist than… you know, hypervigilant staring at every detail to try and spot a machine generated flaw.

The one tricky thing about consuming media from any other culture or time is that you usually don't know if the characters are named:
John Smith
Percival FitzFancy
Extremely Decade/Era Specific Girl's Name
No One In Their Right Mind Would Name a Human That
Thinly Veiled Hint That They Are a Deity/Evil
And unless a character specifically references it or the translator helps you out, you just won't know. "Of course, Evil McEvilson was evil!" "How was I supposed to know that Vel Mevelkin meant that?!?"
Even just knowing if a name is common in that time, if it's a rich person or poor person name, if it indicates their parents didn't value them as much. So much meaning can be in names.
