Hey I was wondering if you could further elucidate on INxx, ISxx, ESxx, ENxx and xNxP, xNxJ, xSxJ, xSxP types like you did with the cooperative, pragmatic, directive and informative types, it would help a lot, thanks in advance.
As always, these are only approximate descriptions. I tried to give some indications that might be helpful for typing, but people are just too complex, so in many cases it can be difficult to see where a given person belongs. Remember that you have the tables, the lists and all the other posts, too :)
⤠ES/IS/EN/IN
This division is about conscious perception. Thereâs something important to keep in mind for the descriptions of extraverts: whatâs written below about ES and EN can be applied to very different scopes and extensions, from a small project on a table to the ruling of an entire country, for example. The thing is that, when you are typing someone whose field of action is clearly on the large/wide side, [s]heâs probably an extravert. One of the adjective pairs that you can use to distinguish E/I in a broad sense is public/private.
⸠ES = conscious Se = Scout (nature intelligence).
ESs are the most realist people, the most attentive to and focused on their surroundings, on the quality, state, condition and aesthetics of objects and people. They want tangible and present sources, proofs, tools and results, and prefer not having to rely too much on promises or âfuture developmentsâ. Usually the quickest and most forceful in their response to physical changes or discoveries (sometimes outright reckless), and also the most emotionally expressive in terms of movement and gestures (ESF>EST). Their behavior is probably the most noticeable (âmanifestâ) in a general sense, because of that trait and the fact that they work directly with what is in front of them. Some statistics say ESs are almost half of the population.
⸠IS = conscious Si = Instructor (historical intelligence).
ISs also attend to qualities and conditions but in a more detached manner, always looking from a distance in both space and time, more interested in long-term processes, careful modification and development, practical usefulness and versatility, sampling/tasting, the internally experienceable, etc. They admire and aim at a certain correction thatâs not immediately tangible, an adjustment that you probably canât see in a photograph. ISs work with variable things in a reliable way, usually slower than ESs. In general they are also less expressive than Es, although some can have occasional abrupt reactions with a physical component (I say âabruptâ partly because they are more unpredictable than those of ESs).
⸠EN = conscious Ne = Detective (patterns intelligence).
ENs are more about the âpowerâ of whatâs happening, not about the objects in themselves (which, in the end, are seen as replaceable). Their interest is focused on various levels of options, on novelty and advancement, on how everything can be rearranged or channeled for a different (âbetterâ) result. They take into account different kinds of possible ramifications and implications, flows and trajectories, positions and potentialities. ENs usually donât mind risky or âtenseâ situations, with lots of moving elements and high stakes. In fact, they are often searching for the advantage, the edge, and try/tend to be a few steps ahead of the rest (thatâs why their behavior can be âtrickyâ). Some are quiet and carefree, but others are really forceful and demanding.
⸠IN = conscious Ni = Philosopher (existential intelligence).
INs look for some kind of encompassing value or understanding, for references and relations that stand outside the physical world. They are attuned to the symbolic, the universal meanings and archetypes that transcend whatâs around them. INs are often full of inner questions and discoveries, moving the question mark, or being moved by it. As the opposite of ESs, both the answers that INs seek and what they ultimately take into account is a âpowerâ that lies beyond material forces and objects. (Just like Si compares to Se regarding forms, Ni corresponds to intangible and untouchable relations, in contrast to the malleability of Neâs). Great part of their efforts and experiences are internal (âunknownâ), and unless they use some kind of tangible way of expression the results stay there as well.
⤠SJ/SP/NJ/NP
These groups are the four combinations of perception and rhythm. The names and related words below are not âoccupationsâ, only attempted summaries for how the minds of each group work. Sometimes thereâs an observable correspondence, but they are internal descriptors. There are Guardian artists, Artisan politicians, Author soldiers, and Rebel mathematicians. They are not the words that most people use to describe themselves, either. Some Authors, for example, prefer names that appear with Rebels or Guardians here. The descriptions often apply to larger spheres and landscapes for extraverts, and to smaller ones for introverts.
⸠SJ = auxiliary Se or Si = conscious sensation conditioned by judgment.
SJ is the Guardian. (Related words: perfecter, corrector, aesthete, keeper). They have a frame of reference for how to take care of things, how things should work and look, etc. Sometimes that includes a method or a process, and other times itâs a more indefinite evaluation. All of those might seem more or less âarbitraryâ for the observer. SJs rely mostly on hindsight: they learn and then apply, and donât tend to improvise, preferring instead to just stop or abandon what they are doing, or start again. (Thatâs where the idea of âproducerâ can be considered, as thereâs usually a sense of âcomplete productâ with them).
All SJs are external melancholic, so they admire and look for some kind of perfection (conditioning, design, etc) in their surroundings or in something outside themselves. In that sense they tend to be more worried (or even afraid) than their SP counterparts (Crossed types), who are more immediate/decisive (and in that sense dangerous, of course) when it comes to action/response. The general idea is that an SJ probably voices his/her concern, trying to establish or remind others of some kind of ordering principle, before (or instead of) taking action. Some statistics say SJs are almost half of the population.
⸠SP = dominant Se or Si = conscious judgment conditioned by sensation.
SP is the Artisan. (Related words: user, preparer, presenter, consumer). Instead of having a judgment reference, SPs try and see whatâs the best use for things, whatâs the particular benefit of each item, which one works and/or looks better, etc. They often take care of several things at once, or of one thing from many different angles at the same time. In that sense some of them can be seen as control freaks, exhausting [others and] themselves in some big/detailed enterprise. Thereâs often a certain feel of randomness with SPs.
Enjoyment as a âvehicleâ makes them more about making use of everything, including unexpected happenings, remains and leftovers, etc. They can accumulate lots of [apparently useless] things, and are better at improvising than their SJ counterparts. This doesnât mean that they always like it, or that they donât express their discomfort, but maybe they do that after the fact. All SPs are external sanguine, so they apply or aim at some sort of enjoyment around them. This can be personal or shared, and it includes nurture, fun, competition, entertainment, etc.
⸠NJ = auxiliary Ne or Ni = conscious intuition conditioned by judgment.
NJ is the Author. (Related words: achiever, director, guide, plotter). Their conscious frame of reference tells NJs that the flow of events is to be understood and managed, and also how to change things, how and where energies and developments should go, etc. This doesnât mean that they are inflexible or immovable, quite the contrary: they can be extremely moody, and they can maneuver skillfully because the path, the means, is not the dominant factor for them. It is precisely the auxiliary one, so it can be twisted and bent if the judging function demands it. This is something that most people donât understand. Where NPs navigate, NJs make channels and dams. The tricky part is that we are not in S-territory here: both the river and the infrastructure are invisible.
Foresight is NJâs vehicle because they are always looking at the currents and how they can be diverted. It is from that perspective that they are occupied with what is next. NJs are usually close to the idea of evolution, not in the âscientificâ sense, but as a general concept: from their point of view thereâs something that drives happenings and improvement, as those things donât come by themselves (or are not trusted to do so, regardless of how much the person would say or prefer otherwise).
⸠NP = dominant Ne or Ni = conscious judgment conditioned by intuition.
NP is the Rebel. (Related words: searcher, experimenter, discoverer, drifter). Instead of having a reference, NPs let their perception of connections tell them what to do and what to ignore or avoid. What they see best is how things change (thatâs mostly why I called their vehicle âamazementâ), so their conclusions always imply an acknowledgment and adaptation/openness to that. In contrast to NJs, and in the same way that SPs try to make use of objects, NPs see the advantages of following and navigating the streams and the tides, instead of imposing rules or evaluations on them. This doesnât imply that they are moody, impulsive or unpredictable, on the contrary: they can be extremely calm and easygoing, precisely for their ability to âgo with the flowâ. Many people donât understand this, probably because they assume rivers are always treacherous and turbulent.
NPs are attuned to encompassing transformations and completely new situations, perspectives and understandings. The idea of revolution (always in a very broad sense) is close to them: changing everything at once, letting implications have their effect and bring some new judgment, some new ordering terms, etc.
LIMITING FACTOR APPROACH: MBTI + CAPACITY
Edit: Iâm surprised that anyone finds this sensible/well thought out [rephrased because it came across ruder than intended] since it was so hard to explain.
This might sound odd, but there seems to be an almost backwards conception about the âlimiting factorâ when it comes to what type a person is. If the person reads philosophy, they suddenly get put into âNâ, even though someone who likes fine dining wouldnât get immediately put into âSâ. If the person is sometimes alone, suddenly theyâre called an âIâ even though weâd rarely say that someone who meets more than just a few people in their lifetime is an âEâ.
Not as commonly, a person who cares about other people on a basic level may get called an âFâ for that reason, even when weâd shy away from labelling the person capable of basic logic a âTâ. Lastly, the person who can follow a basic structure or plan ahead sometimes may get called a âJâ, even though a person not doing this sometimes wouldnât be called a âPâ (or maybe they would, depending on the âpreferredâ qualities).
I propose another interpretation to the absolute metric with MBTI.
⤠Whenever the quality or dimension moves away from what is readily associated with or intrinsic to human existence, as in the most human, that is the limiting factor (LF).
⤠Whenever it moves closer to what we associate with intrinsic humanity, or the most implied by human nature without relying on other influences, that is the abundant factor (AF).
You canât say âexcessâ because thereâs no comparison in intrinsic value. The only hierarchy is what each type does right and not in a way thatâs self-defeating or destructive. I.e., an abundant factor type does AF good and just eventually canât do LF, while a limiting factor type does LF good and does terrible with AF. In a way, all qualities that can be explained in type are human qualities as they occur in humans, but you can see a pattern where some move towards a greater removedness or even distrust in the âhuman factorâ (at the cost of being so dynamic or phenomenal).
Iâll try to explain what I mean.
1.) JâP
J is the limiting factor, and P is the abundant factor. In general, casualness, open-endedness, and emergence (P) are closer to something that is ânaturalâ or âhumanâ than methods, plans, or principles (J). Think of it like order and chaos. The trick is, people tend to think of one as better than the other on a moral level because of which one in their subjective experience works for them, because of their type. Such is the element in many organized religious systems, the historical basis of government, and so forth.
A J-type is someone therefore who can do both but only one of them actually well (again, without the self-destructiveness such as risk of substance dependency), while a P-type is someone who is more so definitely limited in what they can do with J-related things (or such does in harm them: e.g.. some OCD cases, where there is a clear inhibition because of too much constraint).
Someone once got furious with me (directly) and someone else (indirectly) for pointing out the intrinsic order/freedom division, since itâs not one way or the other for everyone, also asking âWell then what makes something beneficial?!â (as if âgoodâ is subjective, truly defeating his religious scruples over the matter). A similar case might happen with the extremely confident libertarian, but less likely. My only response is this: donât change facts to fit your beliefs, change your beliefs to fit the facts. (You could then deny the types exist, but thatâs a different issue.) Insisting that your subjective experience is universal is a form of dogmatism and narrow pettiness.
Another potential variable is predominant temperament. Sanguine/Phlegmatic can slightly mirror P traits internally, while Melancholic/Choleric in that same way can mirror J traits. Some J/P confusion may happen in the following types more than others:
⤠ESFJ (Sanguine/Melancholic) ⤠ESTP (Choleric/Sanguine) ⤠ISFJ (Phlegmatic/Melancholic) ⤠ISTP (Melancholic/Sanguine)
That is, some SFJs may be misleadingly more ârelaxedâ or P-like and some STPs may be misleadingly more âdirectionalâ or J-like.
If we add another variable about the ones that are more visibly J/P, that includes all Introverts and anyone affected by the Choleric or Phlegmatic temperaments externally: that is, also the EN types (since Melancholic and Sanguine are the most visibly or definitely âorderlyâ or âcasualâ in the S-sense and externally, SJ and SP respectively).
2.) TâF
T is the limiting factor, and F is the abundant factor. Itâs fairly in the name, but to explain anyway, empathy, compassion, and values (F) are closer to doing humanness or the personal factor right than logic, distance, and limits (T). T-types then depend on the mechanical and less âhumanâ gauges, as precision>goodness, while F-types are more confident in the personal or group ones, speaking on the goodness>precision of things, which are more human.
Where the âlimitingâ part comes in however is, like the last dimension, how much can each type navigate the other, and which one can generate the next. In particular, a person may reason their way into goodness (that is, developed reason can say learning F-related things as good or advantageous, even initially with clumsiness or the most non-intuitive way of getting there), but itâs unclear if a person can value their way into objectivity. For that, I call âTâ the limiting factor and âFâ the abundant one, for F is undeniably the more human.
An additional variable is the placement of Thinking and Feeling as functions. You might say, then:
⤠TJ (T1/F4) = Least Limited ⤠TP (T2/F3) = Second Least Limited ⤠FP (T3/F2) = More Limited than TP ⤠FJ (T4/F1) = Most Limited by This Factor
The greater disparity is with the J types (regardless of the skill in presenting otherwise), who generally seek their opposite from something outside of or different than themselves.
3.) SâN
S is the limiting factor, and N is the abundant factor. Likely less evident, we generally associate âNâ with something somehow academic, cerebral, etc. However, thatâs just doing N right. Doing S right requires the existence of something else, relating back to the essences of S/N: presence and absence, form and relation, etc.
For a basis of which as the limiting factor, this may explain why there are many S-types who actually see (enough) with theoretical or less definitive/actually risky things and connections, just not with the same confidence, but the reverse with N-types about âSâ things isnât so readily present. Again, thereâs the idea that you can observe enough presences (details) to lead to what is absent (idea), but ex nihilo nihil fit: there has to be something there.
The additional function variable:
⤠SP (S1/N4) = Least Limited ⤠SJ (S2/N3) = Second Least Limited ⤠NJ (S3/N2) = More limited than SJ ⤠NP (S4/N1) = Most Limited by This Factor
Here, the greater disparity is between the P-types.
4.) EâI
E is the limiting factor, and I is the abundant factor. Just like the rationale above, the internal world (which is the more universal world because access to it is shared by everyone in the human race, whereas access to the external world means an adjustment/influence through it happens) is the more human-related one, and the second is, well, technically secondary to being human.
However, E is the limiting factor because for something to be what it is, there must something outside of it that is not so. There is only a Self because there is a not-Self. Another thing is that for there to be a universal or timeless/spaceless thing, there must be, from essential/metaphysical (not temporal) order, an instantiation or spacetime-bound thing⌠unless we want to start a realism vs. nominalism debate again. (ŕ¸'Ě-âĚ)ŕ¸
All right, even if we ignore the controversy around universals, the whole point is that the âIâ element is the more directly human-related one and for the sake of this context is essentially ordered first. If E acts as the limiting factor, an Extravert can usually do I-related things, but being removed from E-things eventually gets tiring or unhelpful, while an Introvert finds it significantly more difficult to even cross over to doing E-things, or at least for the same extensive periods as the Extravert doing I-things.
There are no additional variables for E/I based on type (only on how marked or differentiated oneâs type is). What I wrote about sociability/insociability has more to do with just one aspect of E/I, not what it is intrinsically (thatâs precisely why I wrote the post to clarify).
