How can I acess if someone's Ne is high vs low? I ask because I've read that at times people's tertiary function can be loud since it's a play area they enjoy engaging. I have a coworker that I'm sure is on the Ne /Si axis (and possibly Te/Fi) , but I don't know if she's an NP or SJ.
How unrealistic are they? How much stock do they put in "dreams" and "ideas" about the future without proof? Can they theorize on the spot without holding on too tightly to an idea? How many assumptions do they work off of when moving forward? How good are they at, when it all goes wrong, shrugging it off and instantly jumping to a new method or tactic, or abandoning an idea once it has gone stale? High Ne does all of this automatically. Its best work is done on the spur of the moment. They may not know what they want to do until it's already happening and in motion, and then they sculpt it to their (temporary) vision.
One of the best physical examples of this is in the movie Prometheus, with Elizabeth. She goes through the entire first half of the film thinking the aliens exist to help us and will be benevolent; that is her theory of existence. The instant she finds out they are not, she does a 180 even before the alien fully reveals its evil intentions and is convinced that it is evil and is coming after them. High Ne does this. It instantly connects the dots and jumps the tracks.
SJs are way more methodical, detailed, precise, exact; they want plans and expectations and to manage them with "realistic" ideas about how reality works. Reality is a fluid afterthought to an ENP, and subjective in the eyes of an INP. ESJs are playful, but want the kind of structure that an NP finds limiting and bothersome.
Past job memories..
Remembering how in my past job we had an ISTP IT guy and he was kind of chubby so our ENTJ boss (a woman) actually thought he was adorable and called him winnie pooh once π
That was the 1 time she was sweet and she scared everyone the rest of the time lol even her prospects lol. They were like "Don't get mad! ):" and she used to say "I am not mad!! This is how I speak!! π€"
I admired her a lot. The ISTP IT guy was my friend too, he used to fall asleep infront of the CCTV camera π
There was also an ESTJ girl who acted like she was the HR manager when literally her BOSS was the actual manager, and she used to bully everyone for no reason and made one of my friends resign ): then one day bullied me (INTP) and I was done with it, and I almost threw a hot tea in her face, but instead I just told her in a creepy way that what she had done was very, very wrong...
What's the difference between having Ne as a tertiary fucntion vs as inferior? Does the slight difference in position actually make a change in daily life?
Yes, it does, the same way you'll find an EFP more "forceful" and competent with Te on the spot than you would an IFP's Te.
The higher the Ne, the more able someone is to process multiple possibilities on the spot and give them weight without preferring one description or possibility over the other one. This is how Ne-doms can remain open-minded and not decide things for a long time, or how they shift between ideas and possibilities without feeling tied down, or stay in a mood of "I don't know, maybe so..." or explore without attachment. (This sounds cool... lemme try it out... oh, that was last week, I am over it now...) ISJs treat ideas either with more reverence and importance becase that is not easy for them to do (they want to pick something and follow through on it) or as a playground that is not taken seriously (a fantasy life, here is where I find good ideas for short stories, etc).
Where you most see the difference would be in an environment that demands ideas sharing and action on them; let's say a group of people coming up with new marketing ideas for a business, or even a collaborative writing group. Ne's throw stuff out there, and the EFJ's Ne goes along with all of it on the spot -- that sounds like a great idea, and it would go along well with this other thing, and I agree, expansion sounds terrific! But the ISJ is there, getting frustrated because they want time to think about this new idea and how it will fit in with what already exists or the storyline beats that are established, and it feels like the discussion is happening too fast to do that. They either have to stop trying to think about it and go with the flow, or slow things down to process how this new idea is going to impact everything around it.
Using functions that are the opposite of what your natural cognitive process are, is also tiring. So if you are an extravert, it's not super tiring to use your two extraverted-pointing functions; meaning an ESJ can use Te/Ne or Fe/Ne for hours and have it be stimulating and building up more excitement, enthusiasm, and energy, because they are also bouncing these things off other people in the room. An ISJ using Fe/Te/Ne finds it more tiring, because they are far more internally invested and energized through accessing Si and Ti/Fi.
ESJs often have a very visible Ne and mistype themselves as ENPs as a result, because they naturally generate possibilities on the spot and feel very open-minded and curious about a lot of things, and have many hobbies and interests, without realizing that they are still exerting control over Ne with their dominant Te/Fe, instead of "floating" through life on a sea of possibilities and struggling to organize it.
ISJs love Ne and use it for fun activities and hobbies and interests, but feel apprehensive about being told to generate possibilities on the spot or when pushed to consider something that contradicts a thousand years of belief, because they want something proven and stable.
Can a Te dom be a 9w8 or does ir mean their Te is auxiliary?
I wouldn't use this method to decide if someone is ETJ or not; look for evidence of them using the functions in sequence in their stacking and decide how swift they are to immediately take charge if something goes wrong and needs external organization. ETJs excel at that.
Can a 9w8 be an ETJ? It's less likely than them being a 3 or a 1 or a 6 or an 8, but not impossible. This person would likely create systems so flawless and rational they run themselves, leaving the ETJ more time to relax and take the slow path / trust everything is going to work out fine.
