I'm going to go watch the Mario Galaxy movie in cinemas this weekend and the entire discourse of this film has been an actual nightmare.
I'm gonna give my thoughts about it all and how i feel about this movie before i go see it.
Look, in terms of a casual viewing experience with friends and family, it's probably going to be a good time. I understand that for a casual light-hearted experience and going out, it's gonna be fine for what it is. I'm gonna go watch this film with my brother because we wanna do stuff together. And you know what? I'm glad we have movies like these in cinemas because it allows friends and family to hang out outside and have fun. That's what i really appreciate. Hell, when certain things got shown off about the movie, the fan part of my brain got super duper excited I won't lie.
But in terms of a piece of art, in terms of filmmaking, i will not excuse any sort of defense at all. i do NOT care that this is a Mario thing and therefore it's okay for a film to not have any sort of plot or themes or literally anything to chew on other than hollow references. This is a MOVIE! A FILM! A MARIO GAME CAN GET AWAY WITH A NOTHING STORY BECAUSE ITS A VIDEO GAME! YOU PLAY A GAME FOR THE GAMEPLAY! AND MARIO GAMES HAVE AMAZING GAMEPLAY!!!!!!!
A MOVIE IS ALL ABOUT THE STORY!!!!!! THE CHARACTERS!!! IF IT SUCKS THEN THE MOVIE SUCKS! SIMPLE! Why do you even think the Mario movie got shit reviews? Why do you think right now the Mario galaxy movie is getting bad reviews across the board?
And even from the games Mario has had AMAZING stories that are beloved by all ages and got massive praise. Do we even need to talk about the Mario RPGs? You already know most of them have good stories with really fun characters that have something to them.
Take a look at the Sonic films, especially Sonic 3, that movie got a lot of positive reviews from both CRITICS AND CASUAL VIEWERS!!!!!!! Because the movie had like, some resemblance of themes and a plot and structure and growth. Shadow was praised for a reason. It wasn't even like, amazing or anything but at the very least it wasn't a REFERENCE SLOP FEST AND SAVED IT ALL FOR THE END!!!!!!
Movies are a storytelling medium, a medium where characters are the focus. If the characters are well written and go through growth and conflict that ties into a theme that makes the viewer think and reflect, then a movie will do well. A movie CAN just be light fun, but it will be short lived. The Mario Galaxy movie will make it's money and no one will talk about it after a week or two. Once the Mario movie came out, people talked about it for a week and that's it. But people talked a lot more about Sonic movie 3, Arcane, Cyberpunk Edgerunners, fucking Iron Lung had more of a cultural impact than the MARIO MOVIE!!!
And i am willing to bet that the Mario Galaxy Movie will either not talk about Rosalina's amazing backstory or briefly talk about it. All of those emotions will not be captured on screen and that... makes me very, very, angry... The storybook means a lot to me and it's probably not going to adapted well or even at all on screen... I could be wrong about this as I dont know any spoilers about Rosalina in the film but I'm hearing some rumblings that she doesn't appear that much in the movie...
I saw a YouTube channel try to defend the Mario Movie by talking about the HERO'S JOURNEY! A STORY STRUCTURE THAT HAS BEEN USED FOR HUNDREDS OF YEARS AND IT DOESN'T HELP THE QUALITY OF A PIECE OF FICTION! IT'S BORING! SO SO BORING! Trying to defend a movie by saying it's using a common and overused story structure is LAUGHABLE!!!!!!!! Like sure the structure works, but it's use doesn't show that a film has depth. Details, character growth, themes and how the conflict ties in with the themes, that's where the depth is. Not a fucking plot structure. I'm not asking for Citizen Kane, I'm asking for basic character work that feels satisfying to watch.
And don't you DARE give me "oh its a kid's movie what did you expect?"
Okay? You wanna play that game? Fine. I'll show you just a small tiny fraction of "kids" movies that are beloved by all ages and have something to chew on.
And there's a whole world of live action family films that everyone loves and indie films too. Just, we need to end these defenses for the Mario movies. wouldn't you like a Mario movie that you could confidently say is good?

related to my previous post: this is my POV on the eternal "it is/n't that deep" debate always going on with everything, as someone who now just goes "cool okay whatever" and leaves when something disappoints me instead of wasting time raging about what went wrong or waiting around for it to get better. i think it's good to have all those crazy what-if thought experiments, but i also think you need to make sure you're not setting yourself up for heartache! be nice to yourself and be nice to other people (as the moral so often is...)
