i intended to just leave this at me trailing off but i do genuinely think Robert Eggers is more socially conscious and, for lack of a better term, woke, than Christopher Nolan is. like, as a person. and it shows in their respective works, at least the small sample that i've seen. The Northman isnt woke lol but it does portray this culture in a very unflattering, brutal, almost grotesque way. the ugliness in our past, not the glory or glamour of our past, but the ugliness of it. while neither The Northman nor The Odyssey glorify and idealize the past in the way that conservatives probably want them to/think they do, they have that in common, i think the way the Northman in particular does it is interesting. it's not an especially deep movie in terms of script lol, or even themes. it's Hamlet. well, it's based on a story that predates Hamlet, which Shakespeare used as the inspiration for his play, so it's not exactly "Hamlet" so to speak, but.... i mean, for all intents and purposes, it's Hamlet. Hamlet's deep, i suppose, but not exactly something groundbreaking and new in the 2020s, which is what i mean when i say the Northman isnt deep. but i think the way it *tells* this non-deep story is, in a way, deep. it says a lot. the way a story is told tells just as much as the story itself does.

That being said…

There was certainly a few things that I had qualms with, some serious concerns and some smaller things I was personally just not crazy about

But the main thing

This movie wasn’t about Odysseus

It was a very good movie about a man having a very long journey home, but that man wasn’t Odysseus

At no point in the whole three hour run time did I think “wow he’s clever”. The movie said he was clever but it never proved it. Every choice he made seemed built on spite, sorrow, or even just pure stupidity

always the same with you people. "tiny little X problem isn't so bad" while you ignore all the other little problems. and then for every issue a new retard pops up to defend the one little thing while pretending the rest of the shitshow isn't happening.

plastic armor. viking ship. not a single greek, but black and asian actors are there. the weird remorse about winning with his horse and the lack of Nobody and more things i'm not thinking of right now. this is not faithful to anything, neither the themes, looks or even ethnicities.
