something i really liked about project hail mary is that Rocky and Grace are both equally out of their depth and about as competent as the other. theyre both the smart one. theyre both total dumbasses. neither knows whats going on. they both think the other is an idiot baby. they both admire the other's intelligence so much.
I would like to share the story of a very understandable but unfortunate mistake i made at work recently
So I'm weeding our ancient and terrible collection of children's books for the first time in possibly ever, and I'm making a decision about a book about migrant workers by Sandra Weiner, called Small Hands, Big Hands. And I'm not 100% sure and I go to just see if there's anything out there about this book's being notable in any way so I do an open web search for
"small hands big hands weiner"
And then I look at my results for a moment
and then at last I somberly add to the end of my search, "BOOK"
I have one like that:
In mathematics, you often consider the two-dimensional plane - you know, the idealised flat two-dimensional object that extends infinitely - which can be real or complex (doesn't matter what that means)
On this, you can perform a mathematical operation called a "blow-up" (resulting in a more complicated geometry)
I needed to look up a formula related to this, so I confidently typed into the search bar:
"Blow up real plane"
The results were not what I wanted and I am not sure if I'm on a terror watchlist now.

idk how to explain it but im never truly comfortable with the way people insinuate that all older folks are inherently bigoted. it always feels like it kind of hand-waves away personal responsibility like ohhhh grandpa cant help homophobic, hes old. well ive met plenty of older folks who are normal about gay people. i think grandpa could be better. i think we should hold grandpa to higher standards.
I've told this story a lot of times, but my in-laws went from "my father-in-law told my wife 'it's better to marry than to burn' when she came out to them for the first time, as bi, in the late 90s" to "leaving their shitty regressive church, helping build their new church's Pride float, and then opening their home to act as sponsors and a landing space for two trans women fleeing persecution in Central America, who they call 'our girls' and who call them Mom and Dad and check in with them weekly from their new home together as a married couple on the East Coast with their paperwork all sorted."
And on the other hand, I wrote my biological father a letter a few months ago calling him out on the shit he was saying to family about the trans people who are his kids and grandkids, and he tried to lie to my face about it while saying "it's just my traditional ways."
My FIL is in frequent contact with all of his children and is visited by them regularly. My father's grandkids haven't spoken to him in years, and 2/3 of his children don't talk to him at all. My mom respects our names & pronouns, even if she doesn't "get it" or whatever,* and I text with her pretty much every day.
It's Granddad's choice whether or not he wants to be lonely.
*tbh, you can't make someone "get it". At my age, as long as someone treats me with respect, whatever goes on in their head and heart is between them and their God and is nothing to do with me.
My grandma is a dyed-in-the-wool Southern Baptist and I admit I was nervous about coming out to her as trans, so my auntie (who is more like a big sister to me) offered to tell her. And my grandma's response was "Well I don't understand it per se, but I'm proud of you for being who you are." And then she went to my auntie, who is a doctor, and was like "so clearly things have changed since I was last in biology class, explain me how this works because clearly there is a gap in my education here and I want to understand." (which my aunt did, s/o to my aunt who works at a children's hospital and has had trans patients). Like did I think my grandma would freak out? No. Was I still nervous? Yes. But her response was so awesome and heartening, and this is a woman in her late 80s.

hello i would like everyone to know that sometimes you can sob your eyes out and have an existential crisis one moment and then suddenly you're booking your driver's test and applying for jobs and crocheting a blanket and maybe life isn't so bad anymore!! maybe you can feel awful and fix your life anyway!! maybe you're allowed to be a wreck and still be good enough!! i am a full on adult and have avoided getting my license for years but now i'm finally doing it because i've grown around the fear!!!! the world didn't crash and burn when i was fifteen!! i did this for myself and i'm going to be okay!!
the way i am shaking with tears is an understatement I'VE BEEN QUOTED
I'm printing it and taping it to my mirror BTW

My least favorite things about anti- UBI discourse is always the techbros whining that "nobody is going to work anymore! People will just watch Netflix all day!" and I have 2 responses:
1) Who the fuck cares. Who the fuck cares what people do with their time! That's kind of the fucking point!
2) People aren't going to stop laboring. Housework (look, it's right there in the word!) will still need to be done. So will maintenance on our homes and personal spaces. Children will still need carers, as will the elderly and disabled. There are millions of examples of ~work~ that we do all the time, uncompensated, that won't suddenly stop because we aren't forced to sell our labor to provide corporation's profits.
I'm not surprised that what is traditionally women's work is invisible to these dipshits, but it never fails to anger me.
Anyway. Join the IWW.
Field studies have been conducted in several countries now, and the result is always the same - people will just flop about for a couple of months to recover from the burnout most people who have a job live with, and then they look for something to do. Some get a job with reduced hours, and some start doing charitable stuff like volunteering in soup kitchens and teaching others to do whatever their particular skill is. They socialize more, they are happier, and on average, people will work more, not less.
But the thing is, employers suddenly have to think about how to make their jobs appealing enough for someone to come and do them! It's hard to find someone to work for you for long hours under horrible conditions, if they can just choose not to; which shows you how voluntary our current system actually is.
🎶People won't stop working! If so, fuck it!🎵

I just have to lock in and get through my to-do list and then I'll start my new system with a clean slate and everything will be better.
Me, replying to every malingering email in my inbox: "It's going to be such a relief to clear this out finally!"
Everyone I'm replying to sending a response at the same time because I emailed them at the same time: ...
I'll set a calendar event for two weeks ahead of time and two days ahead of time so I won't forget.
If I just remember to do it every day it'll become a habit and I won't have to think about it.
I'll just stay at my desk until all of my tasks are done for the day and then they won't build up.
That's important, let me write it down on my hand so I can't ignore it.
If I skip lunch I'll catch up a little bit and I won't have to stay late or start early to stay on top of things.
I think if I work late all week that'll get me through the backlog and then I just have to keep up.
