So every year, my aquarium does a captive lobster hatchery project (hence all the loblings). The reason we’re doing it is because in the wild, loblings only have a 1 in 25,000 chance of surviving their larval phase. They’re plankton as babies and everything eats them. Additionally, as the Gulf of Maine warms, they are having even lower survival rates because the blooms of copepods they feed on as babies are happening earlier in the year, and they’re missing it.
Obviously, the goal of this experiment is to grow the lobsters until they’re big enough to settle to the seabed and then release them, because they have a much higher likelihood of surviving to adulthood when they’re able to hide. Ideally, captive lobster hatcheries can boost the wild population and keep things stable, so we don’t have a major crash in a decade or two.
The first year we tried this was pretty bad. We had a lot of eggs, but very few babies. It turned out that the CO2 levels in the building spiked as more guests visited throughout the summer, and that settled into the water and threw off the pH and caused a chemical reaction that prevented a lot of the eggs from hatching. I think we ended up releasing three baby lobsters (which is still better than their wild survival rate but not great).
The second year was a little better. We added a de-gasser to the aquarium and got a ton of larval lobsters, but right as they were settling to the bottom we had a disease outbreak that killed most of them. We ended up releasing four babies at the end of the season.
But this year? Oh boy. We have so many lobsters that we had to release the first round early (usually we wait till September or October so guests can see them). We just released a total of FIVE HUNDRED AND TWENTY FIVE baby lobsters, and we still have over a hundred who haven’t settled to the bottom yet. I genuinely don’t even have words to explain how cool this is. OVER FIVE HUNDRED. We just added hundreds of lobsters to the wild population that wouldn’t have been there otherwise.
Conservation is so fucken sick
its pride month and im very burnt out from working in healthcare however i do love it for the ambiguity the uniform/masks offer. had a conversation with a patient after seeing him for a day or two where he was like
"Sorry, I don't mean to offend--"
Which of course, I brace for hell, since he is around 60, and i am a gangly cryptid that people usually struggle only to find the right slur to apply to. But i dutifully keep my work voice and go "nah nah, don't worry, what can I do?"
He hits me with "Are you--uh, I've been saying 'thank you ma'am' but are you... okay with that? What should I call you?"
And i live in a small conservative pocket within one of the most liberal states in the US, so my experience in public is varied. People have guessed, they've gone with she, he. they, they've awkwardly avoided it, but no stranger had ever asked me.
So i panicked and chuckled. This felt kind of like walking into a fake tumblr post. I said "Oh, you can call me whatever you want, its fine."
Any cis person would probably sound a little insulted. i knew i was confirming some kind of gender fuckery, but giving him the out that he didn't have to change anything. Fucker kindly smiles though, and like. Pounces. Asks, much more confidently, "But would you prefer sir? What are your pronouns?"
He's on script now, I'm astral projecting to a different plane where i'm a bug on a well lit microscope and my throat's a little tight all the sudden. I say, "Oh. I uh--I use they/them."
I use they or he, but 'they' is the language curveball. I know this, which is why i usually just let people use whatever. He nods, and I choke out (because its been a bad bad day, autoimmune flare pain on top of record high patient numbers) "Thanks. No one... has ever asked me. Have a good day."
He told me the same, I booked it, because the dim room was hiding watery eyes but not for much longer. Got it together in a nearby closet (ha) and moved on.
Came back later on in the evening because I had promised to visit when his wife was there earlier in the day. She's sweet, he's sweet, I do my usual spiel, he avoids any 'ma'am' studiously, but on me going to head out again, hits the dilemma of having no polite substitute for 'ma'am' or 'sir' that isnt gendered in some subtle way, and he's fucking trying, but this is not second nature obviously.
So what comes out is "Have a wonderful night, Them!"
Beaming, proud, right next to his extremely confused wife, who he seems to have not outted me to (nice) who now thinks he's probably having a stroke (funny, but not nice lmao)
Anyway, tldr, not adding to the well-meant bigot strawman theory, man wasn't a bigot, it was just. Nice, that in a sea of alt, visibly queer or vocally liberal people my age or younger who never thought to ask or just didn't want to deal with the awkwardness of stumbling through it... some lone dad guy decided 'good enough' wasn't enough and volunteered to correct himself.
I hope young boys see me out and about in my fun ridiculous outfits and go “wait… that’s allowed? I can dress like that?”
enough miserable boys in t-shirts and jeans because that’s all they feel they can wear. wear a colourful cardigan. the world needs your colour and your spirit
Lmao the cardigan is the foundation for a miserable boy to gain light behind her/their eyes.
I’ve been the cause of a girl’s trans awakening before and it was absolutely wonderful. solidarity forever and ever and ever
TRUE FOREVER
Ok what is a cardigan and how many times do I have to break my way out of this same fucking eggshell
it's less of an eggshell and more of a seasonal moult. you are like an awesome lobster or a snake. each time you moult will feel a little more comfortable and a little more worldly. a cardigan is a knitted button up jumper/sweater. be free be cosy
hrt that makes you a orc

suns will see dna and be like "is anyone gonna make some thiamine dimers in that" and not wait for an answer
shrimp dont even know how beautiful and adorable and perfect they are. they just do their own utterly incredible thing without a care in the world
We could learn a thing or two from them… you are beautiful and adorable and perfect to someone even if you dont think so… because some of the most wonderful things in the world do not and even cannot know their own incredible nature…
It's my cat's birthday (anniversary of me getting him) so I told him the story of his life while petting him real good
Highlights include:
For your first two years (when you were small) you lived in a foster home with people who raised you into a very polite young man. Two is like you plus me, that's what two is.
Some people adopted you before me and they called you Timmy (which is a stupid name) and they returned your ass almost immediately because you were so annoying at that age.
Like think about how annoying you are right now at seven years old, but way worse.
I'm better than them though, I don't call you Timmy and I wore earplugs to bed for three years because you love to scream at bedtime. Earplugs are like when I roll over and go back to sleep even when you are yelling so so so loud.
I got you at a time in my life when I was really sick (being sick is like when I'm up late because I'm throwing up and you are a very handsome good boy who sits with me) and they had to put me asleep for a procedure. A procedure is like what happened to you when they put you asleep and took your balls away.
Now you've lived with me for five years. Five is like the number of toe beans on one of your feet. When I clip your nails five is when we're halfway done. But we're hopefully not even halfway done with how long we get to be together. I'm gonna have to figure out new ways to help you count.
Actually I've decided this is a poem
sorry to everyone out there who thinks they have the funniest tshirt but i think i can confidently say i just saw the actual funniest tshirt just now. i passed by a beautiful black woman with long multicolor braids blowing majestically in the beach breeze & she was wearing an oversized tshirt that said in gigantic letters "WHITE BOY OF THE YEAR"

need to bring back the distinction between minimalist/genderless androgyny/gender neutrality vs maximalist/genderful androgyny, because i am very tired of people talking about androgyny being encouraged or valued when it is very clear they mean the kind of androgyny that relies on the minimization of gendered traits (allowing one to be associated with pre-pubsecence, female virginity, angels, the kind of androgyny that has been, to varying degrees throughout time and place, ideologically permitted in the christian world) and is also profoundly white and thin. when androgyny is undeniably adult and is defined by not a lack of gendered traits and a quiet excusal from gender, but rather actively possessing "opposing" gendered traits, it tends to be treated differently.
yes* the image most people have in their heads of a nonbinary person is someone white, thin, lacking breasts, lacking a visible penis, lacking facial hair, lacking makeup, lacking lacking lacking. but why is it that when people critique this image, they never critique the idea that this is how we are defining androgyny? people loving talking about how this image is neutral-masculine as proof it favors transmasculine/FTX people, but there are plenty of transfeminine/MTX people who also go for this neutral-androgynous look.
meanwhile, many nb/gq/gnc people of all assigned sexes and genders are hairy, fat, have breasts (or give themselves breasts), have penises (or give themselves penises), dresses using both feminine and masculine clothing, etc. hell, just look at how stigmatized the androgyny of intersex people with PMOS & other kinds of hyperandrogenism are. the image of a fat hairy person with large breasts and a deep voice is repulsive in patriarchal culture; this is androgyny, too. to act like "androgyny" is one simple thing is to erase how misandrogyny actually functions.
*& to be clear, such people also face violence and oppression due to their gender nonconformity & androgyny, even while being a more palatable kind of androgyny in certain contexts
It became apparent that my brand of gender-nonconformity was somehow more attractive to men than Alok and Jacob’s, and as the night wore on, I found myself sincerely befuddled. The looks I gave in my pictures were just as funky as theirs, with my partly-shaved head and my geometric bodysuit plus oversize platform heels, or a close-up of me sans makeup that showed off my strong brow and flat chin in all their androgynous glory. I wondered aloud why Alok and Jacob weren’t getting matches, if there was some algorithmic mystery at play—whether guys were racist against Indians, in Alok’s case, or if they found Jacob’s bright makeup too intimidating. “Meredith,” Alok finally blurted out, interrupting me in a tone replete with tolerance. “You look cis.” With those words, Alok exposed the key difference between me and them. Though I’ve come into my own gender-nonbinary identity, to many, my body reads as cisgender because I’m short and don’t have body hair. I’ve also taken hormones and had reassignment surgery, because I went through a period when I thought I was a binary trans woman, before figuring out I wasn’t comfortable with that identity either. What I didn’t quite grasp until Alok pointed it out was that now, regardless of how GNC I tried to present, cis people still predominantly read me as a cis woman. If I told a stranger I was trans, it’s likely they might think I’m an early-transitioning trans guy more than anything else. So on Tinder, I can still get dates, since there are plenty of guys who like the androgynous female look. On the other hand, Alok and Jacob’s features haven’t been softened by hormones, and they have visible body hair that marks them as more obviously trans, so they have a much harder time. Nonbinary femmes like them are too masc for the straights, too femme for the gays, and too out for nearly everyone else.
from "Why Can’t My Famous Gender Nonconforming Friends Get Laid?" by Meredith Talusan (she/they)
for reference, here's photos of Meredith, Jacob, and Alok:
I would argue what is depicted here as "femme" androgyny is (one example of) what I would describe as maximalist/genderful androgyny; it is read as "femme" as opposed to "masc" because minimalist/genderless androgyny focuses on minimizing gendered characteristics to be neutral (non-masculine non-feminine), and neutrality in patriarchal society is read as diet-masculine by default — and perhaps cis by default, because both of those things are more comfortable for people in a patriarchal society to assume of a person who minimizes intensely gendered traits.
But the treatment Alok and Jacob experience, in my opinion, while shaped by femmephobia, is not reducible to femmephobia alone. It is the combination of explicitly masculine traits (like body and facial hair) and feminine traits (makeup, feminine clothing), their failure to pursue and perform a non-masculine femininity, that leads them to be seen as undesirable. This is misandrogyny.
Although, I should also note that "guys who like the androgynous female look" are, not always, but not infrequently chasers, and they do not always treat people they see as "androgynous females" with genuine respect even if they sexually desire them. See, for example, Lou Sullivan's experience being fetishized and manipulated by his chauvinist cis boyfriend, who desired him as an "androgynous female" and so pressured him to not transition and tried to convince him that his desire to be a gay man was unhealthy and unattainable & as mentioned in the og post, being seen as more palatable in certain context does not mean that androgyny like Meredith's is not punished, even violently, in many others. The point being, this kind of androgyny is not straightforwardly "privileged" and this article is more focused on hoping that Meredith's friends can find genuine love and good sex, rather than interrogating how different forms of androgyny are perceived and treated under patriarchy.
its crazy that megan thee stallion is not considered a queer artist by some people. the woman is not shy about the fact that she finds women attractive and likes having sex with them. she references it pretty frequently in her music, she made a whole song about enjoying having threesomes with a woman and a man, she made a Jennifer's Body-themed music video, she had Victoria Monét full riding her thigh on stage at a coachella, and there's literally a video of a lesbian interviewing glorilla at a party & asking who she would date if she was queer and her immediate response is "megan. megan like girls!" and then megan turns around and immediately starts flirting with the interviewer. i don't know what more you want. that woman is Bi Sexual and we should all be thankful every day for that. bi women are still bi when they wanna fuck men too you know. the fucking of men is also done bisexually.
someone PLEASE call the gay people police !!!!!!! a queer woman of color is talking about being horny for women guys please we NEED to stop this quick!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
does a bi woman sexualizing women in her music & wanting an FMF threesome make her a gay icon
yes
veritably
indubitably
its a requirement actually
really good tags so far. also. just have to make this point:
meg's music in general is frequently very horny. when she includes her attraction to women in her music its sexual because when she includes her attraction to men in her music its sexual. she's a sexually explicit artist. you know. "your honor i'm a freak bitch handcuffs leashes" "hoes tryna get picked, i'm just tryna get dick" "mandatory that i get the head but no guarantees on the penetration" literally references pimping out men in her music all the time 1/2 of Wet Ass Pussy herself.
she very much depicts herself as a sexual subject and sexual actor in her music, someone who desires and chooses to act upon those desires with confidence and skill. and given how much intense misogynoiristic hate she gets from cishet men i think it should be very very obvious she's not faking being into women to get cis male approval!
so to assume that her talking about being sexually attracted to women and faking wanting a threesome with a man and a woman and faking having had and planning to continue having sex with women is her performing fake bisexuality to pander to straight men is laughable. and also disgustingly biphobic and racist. as with the original post, its very much an intersection of biphobia and anti-Blackness; there is no way for her to be a "good queer icon" to such people as shown above. this whole post could apply to Cardi B or any number of Black mspec artists, or just queer Black artists in general.
[ID: a screenshot of a comic speech bubble. The black text in it reads "No matter how open-minded, socially conscious, anti-racist I think I am, I still have old learned hidden biases that I need to examine. It is my responsibility to check myself daily for my stereotypes, prejudices and, ultimately, discrimination." /ID end]
antiracism is a constant process. i was raised in a racist village and it's not easy to get rid of it. i moved away over 10 years ago but those ideas are still haunting me.
also keep in mind that shame + guilt are not conducive to growing as a person. when it comes to "checking yourself" it should be a non-judgemental process. it's not about flagellating yourself for every bad thought or trying to purify your mind of all corruption. it's only when acknowledging your own racist thoughts doesn't fill you with dread that you can really progress past the white guilt of it all.
radical self-acceptance & genuine self-critique are not opposites. they need each other. do not let obsessive-compulsive behaviors colonize your desire to grow as a person.
how were so many of the things that were basic writing/plotting advice in Every Single craft book when I was a teenager just completely straight up wrong
the biggest and worst offender I think was plotting advice that encouraged me to build my plot around my characters "desires" or "goals"
protagonists were kind of forced into a flat dichotomy of 'active' (takes actions to further their own goals, thus driving the story) and 'passive' (is acted upon by events beyond their control, moving them through the plot) with 'active' being considered good and passive being considered bad
I think this framework is very locked within a certain cultural viewpoint... specifically of a 20th century western white male. For one thing it assumes a "protagonist" will have a certain level of agency, to have goals and pursue them, overcoming obstacles in the way. It is not very inclusive of characters that don't have much agency.
It also assumes that desire/want = orienting toward or pursuing.
As far as I am concerned, characters don't have goals. They CAN, but these goals aren't actually the functional gears of the plot, and are instead their conscious rationalizations of what's really running the show.
Rather, characters have instincts and drives. I don't like to say "desires" because desire suggests something that is explicit, a thing that the character can attribute their feelings to.
I realized when reading Shakespeare's Othello that interesting characters often can't be understood in terms of "goals" or "desires" because they don't understand what they want or why they want that and they constantly act in ways that are contradictory to what they want or think they want. What a character consciously thinks is a whole layer on top of their actual instincts and feelings, which are primal and buried in traumas and needs and other aspects of creaturehood, and often is a fiction to resolve contradictions and dissonance in the demands of the creature-self. some characters can reflect upon their own thought processes and some cannot.
real humans don't often act rationally to pursue goals, they just do stuff based upon a seethe of inner instinct and the reasons why are post-hoc rationalizations. i like writing characters that reflect this and exploring the ways they do and don't understand themselves, the fictions they use to understand what's going on in there
affirmations:
- it’s fun to be awake & in an upright position
- consciousness is a gift
- i CAN do this anymore

me making ocs when i was 13: okay i want my character to be cool and different but not too different... i dont want anyone to call them a mary sue... or too edgy... or forced diverrsity.... and i have to draw good or else i could end up on a deviantart youtube video like my friend did that one time... this is hard...
me writing characters now: hes a wolf with blue hair and he has a chainsaw that can turn into a bass guitar. his name is road boy because three bikers found him on the road during the apocolypse and raised him to do stunt motorcycle tricks but they have no idea what his real name is hes bi and ace and his best friend is a trans woman and he lives in an abandoned mall
You have piqued my curiosity. How does one give a stick bug a hemolymph transfusion? Where's the hemolymph sourced from?
The hemolymph can be sourced from other “donor” stick bugs! Here is the article outlining the procedure
