The Most Tumblr Punchline

I've noted before that my favorite punchline on Tumblr is "hang on, gotta look something up/okay that's funny."

Let me explain why:

It is a way to say "I don't get it" without blaming the joke or the teller.

It is a tacit admission of ignorance without shame or judgement.

It assumes responsibility for acquiring the knowledge the respondent doesn't already have.

It cues other people who Don't Get It to do the look-up themselves, allowing them to get that full impact of Getting It without derailing the post with explanations.

It gives subsequent readers, whether or not THEY got the joke, a little frisson of good feelings when they realize that someone else is now In On The Joke.

It not only makes the original joke funnier, it gets funnier the more often it's used.

Several years ago, on a crowded commuter train in southern england, I was standing in the aisle, being miserable with many other miserable people, and there was an annoying persistent rattling noise. it was loud, inconsistent but constant, and designed to inflict suffering. Eventually I worked out that it was a window, which obviously needed to be open because it was sweltering hot, but which (being a british train not in London) was a piece of shit falling apart.

I took a random scrap of receipt from my pocket, folded it up, and with a serene "pardon me" popped that fucker straight into the part of the window that was rattling. the rattle stopped instantly. silence spread like a balm. the bliss was intense, palpable, intimate. I felt powerful love and affection. sometimes things happen like that.

Haha, not in the British isles, “and then they all clapped” is only for something truly spectacular (although i personally think they’re more willing than Americans to suddenly chant things in unison or react collectively). But the British do a good line in collectively convening a silent court of public opinion, that passes and broadcasts judgement. Sometimes the psychic battles and disturbances can get intense, and may erupt into someone actually saying something out loud pointedly. But in this case, there was nobody in favour of the clattering window, and plenty of people bothered, and the solution unobtrusive. I think I got a few thoughtful nods avoiding all eye contact, and perhaps some reflective head tilts

To speak from a European perspective: alcohol and smoking is allowed in most European places earlier than in the US (beer often is 16+ in central Europe and 18+ for stronger drinks, though some other places in Europe have it younger or older). And circumcision tends to be stronger regulated in a bunch of countries here - though usually it will be allowed for religious reasons. It is by far not as common as in the US though, where thanks to Kellogs and his sexual anxieties somehow it was decided that boys should be circumcised so that they might not masturbate.

Body Modification is largely the same though. Infants might get ear piercings by parental request, but if someone pierces a 17yo without parental consent, they are getting in trouble.

Though to be perfectly honest: age regulations around alcohol and smoking have not been properly enforced in a lot of places I have been. I literally was on a summer camp where someone gave a 12yo tequila.

It's not hard. Really, it isn't.

Just look at HEMA. Using my sport as an example, HEMA attracts a lot of white supremacist chuds. So what does my club do to alienate them? We state our values up front, and we live those values. Every single one of us.

When I joined the beginner's class, the coach walks in front of all the new students and says, "HEMA stands for Historical European Martial Arts. Some people mistake 'European' to mean 'better than everyone else'. If you believe that, there is the door. In this club we respect people's identities and pronouns, if you cannot do that, there is the door. "

Even if the chuds stick around after that, eventually they do leave. Why? Because we make all of our values explicitly known through our interactions with each other in the club, and we shut their bullshit down whenever they try something. The fact that so many of us are queer, or trans, or just real as fuck allies alone does it sometimes. That we don't tolerate any amount of fuckery and if somebody says a racist or homophobic or misogynistic "joke", they get shut down by the bearded white cis men who they incorrectly assume will have a laugh with them. And then those dumb racist sexist fucks leave. And never come back.

We don't have to kick them out. We will take their money as membership fees until they either change their mind and grow as a human being and become an actual respectable human being, or until they cower and leave. They always self-select for us.

And that's how you fucking do it.
