Summary:
Tim offers to play the part of Jon's boyfriend to rescue him from an uncomfortable situation at a work event - obviously, Jon declines. Thanks, but no thanks, he'd rather not.
This, of course, has nothing to do with any flaw or failure on Tim's part. To the contrary, it’s easy to imagine spending more time with him in a private capacity, doing whatever people their age do for dates. It’s been a while. If Jon is honest with himself, maybe it’s been never. Even Georgie, who was probably the closest he’d ever gotten to a normal relationship, had taken him in as a scraggly stray, much like the Admiral, more than they’d ever dated in any traditional sense. At least the Admiral eventually got the hang of affection.
So, no, Jon doesn’t expect Tim’s proposition to come up again. Therefore, naturally, it does exactly that.
OR
Five times Tim and Jon weren't dating, and one time they were, in a sense, if the distinction even matters.
guy who pronounces whatsapp "what's a peepee"
It's so funny to me that by far, the TMA character with the most inconsistent character design across different artists is the admiral

completely personal preference obviously but i hate when there's a time travel fix-it and everything goes smoothly and the protagonist is just cool and confident with all their knowledge of the ruined future. nooo shut up. what is even the point if they're not an emotionally traumatized mess frantically trying to fix things and fucking up as they do so, keeping secrets and alienating their loved ones, causing new and interesting problems and barely scraping through to an eventual better ending
My preferred outcome is for them to avoid the problems in the original timeline only to face a whole host of new, unforeseen consequences because reality is fuckin complicated and you can't control all the factors in the world no matter how hard you try <3
i particularly like when they're managing the whole power fantasy handling everything more or less smoothly due to the power of hindsight and having leveled up for like a third of the story, and then get bodied by the unexpected consequences.
The best regressors are at least 50% visibly cracking at the seams because of the situation. 🥰
More seriously, though: the reason this tends to be contentous in fandoms is because there are two very different fantasies at play in the time-travel fix-it genre.
The first is the optimiser's fantasy: figuring out how to run the optimal version of the scenario. This tends to be big with video game mechanic stories because it's not really about people, it's a resource management based thought experiment in story form.
The second is the dramatist's fantasy: going back and dealing with all the trauma and seeking closure. This tends to lean into the Butterfly Effect and have things go wrong, because it is about ✨Drama!✨at heart.
Which is why the two camps often hate each other's stories. 😅
The reconciliation is to have the optimizer require multiple runs during which things go horribly wrong before they can figure out how to groundhog day their way to the optimal scenario. Usually with the caveat that they've optimized this scenario, but reality of course will contain many more once they're out of the loop.

you've gotta be kind to yourself no matter what
this is twice as true in the winter
the world isn't ending and you don't need to kill yourself it's literally december. it's december. and you need to be nice to yourself.
in the tags, what's your biggest red flag?
never lose hope. somewhere, a middle-aged, gender ambiguous person with an advanced degree in an esoteric field and a fiber arts hobby could be crashing out and pinning all their remaining mental health on getting obsessed with your otp. any day now, the most elegantly written 100k fanfic you have ever read is going to hit ao3. it could happen. it has happened.

People on Tumblr love sharing information about themselves no matter how asinine it is. And I'm the same way. Everybody tell me what the last thing you drank was.
we need more pathetic female characters written by authors who don't hate women
to be clear since this is making the rounds: she has to be an absolute loser in no way that can be pinned on her gender. no "i'm just a girl tee-hee" stuff. straight up just a loser (nondenominational)
addendum: she must be the most important person in the whole narrative
I decided to sit down and concentrate and properly write the list of rules that qualify a character for this role.
FIRST LAW: This character must be a woman.
SECOND LAW: This character must be a loser, but not in a way that can be pinned on her gender. Misogynistic response from the audience does not disqualify the character.
THIRD LAW: If the audience does not enjoy this character, then it becomes impossible to enjoy the show/film/book/game altogether. It is not possible to ignore this character, for better or for worse.
FOURTH LAW: The character must make bad decisions, and not just be a victim of poor circumstances outside of her control. The character can also be a victim of poor circumstances outside of her control, but it has to be primarily her personal choices that deem her a loser.
