Can you name a web search engine that you used before Google?
Yes
No
Don't know/just want to see the results
The book I'm reading suggests that Google became so market dominant that most people couldn't name a search engine that came before it, so I'm curious.

I primarily used AltaVista and Yahoo before my 10th grade English teacher told me about Google in 2000. I have such a vivid memory of being like, "oh shit this IS a great tool..." which is hilarious to recall 26 years later.

The scuff-marks on this boat looks like a painting.
every year small towns and indigenous communities across canada are burnt to nothing by horrific wildfires and americans go on the internet to complain about it and blame us bc the smoke has spread to their state. iâm so tired.
go yell at mark carney or your own local politicians about climate change and urge them to do more to stop it. the namaygoosisagagun first nation had their community destroyed today. you can find a link to donate to them here. donate to your local food bank. go to the beach next week when the smoke clears and you donât have to think about it anymore while the people whoâs lives have been destroyed will have to pick up the pieces and try to move forward when we are already in a huge cost of living crisis across the country.
rbing with other places you can donate to to support those impacted by the fires!
true north aid (an organization aimed at providing support to remote/northern indigenous people in canada)
canadian red cross wildfire fund
ontario spca and humane society (links to their donate page specifically aimed at supporting pets and animals in areas impacted by the fires)
and the anishinabek nationâs page where you can donate to support the namaygoosisagagun nation who had their land destroyed by the fires is still accepting donations
âWe can see that Nazism understands itself to be engaged in a culture war with Jews over gender roles and gender/sexual variance. But, just as we saw in the original National Socialist regime, Nazism also understands the fundamental terrain of this war to be on the level of biology. There is a deep anxiety expressed in Nazi and far-right thinking which is constantly concerned about the biological undermining of the white race yes, but also the white male, and his hormone balance, his testosterone level. Nazi political ontology understands the biological as one of, if not the most important terrains of political dispute. We know this in our understanding of Nazi race theory, but what has been neglected is the centrality of endocrinological purity and security to Nazi ideology. In this sense, endocrinological purity is the gender/sex corollary of the Nazi eugenic project of racial purity.â

Despite it all I can't hate solarpunk. It's caramel-apple sweet-simplistic, a desire for a greater world on one simple axis without grappling with any kind of political reality. You can chip at its ankles but unfortunately it will still be kind of awesome epicsauce at its heart. Sometimes you really do need to just cut past all the hard-nosed realism, get back to the kid looking up at you with those big blubbering eyes saying "what if everyone was nice to eachother?" That kid does not know an ant's arse about the real world or how it works, but they're still 1000 times more correct than all of us trying to explain why it can't be done. You can't lose sight of the stupid, hopeless dream. You can't lose sight of it. Otherwise you turn into a dickhead.

Something that the Americnas of this site wont even comprehend. Shit like this happens everyday in europe and we get used to it because the alternative is some yanke bullcrab
This... I'm almost sure it's a visual rendition of a Soviet sci-fi story, "Crabs crawl over an island" by Anatolij Petrovic Dneprov.
It involved a weapons experiment with autonomous drones that fed on metal on an island, observed by IIRC a pair of scientists and created by a weapons' engineer looking to make the ultimate weapon. He was expecting that the competition among them will quickly produce the ultimate killing machine... well, vehicle killing at least. I *think* they were controllable, too? Anyhow, what happened was exactly what's pictured - they fought among themselves, evolving fascinating weaponry and methods of attack.. .but it quickly became apparent the conditions favour huge, lumbering forms rather than the quick and nimble can-openers he was expecting. In the end... I can't recall if the control mechanism became lost or the simply evolved "past" it as it had no bearing on their survival, but the engineer himself died at their pincers due to having gold teeth and metal-rim glasses (which his killer consumed) and finally, the battling resulted in one huge, lumbering and useless crab which went into hibernation as the couple looked for ways to escape the island, now realizing it wasn't interested in them

You are correct! It is in fact based on Anatolij Dneprov's short story.

Sometimes Iâm looking for something online - often âhow toâ articles - and I want to filter for - like - a website that was clearly built in 2010 at the latest, which may or may not have been updated since then, but contains a vast wealth of information on one topic, painstakingly organized by an unknown legend in the field with decadesâ worth of experience. I donât want a listicle with a nice stolen picture in a slideshow format written by a content aggregator that God forgot. I want hand-drawn diagrams by some genius professor who doesnât understand SEO at all, but understands making stir-fries or raising stick insects better than anyone else on this earth. I donât know what search settings to put into Google to get this.
thank you for articulating this cri de coeur for me
ngl these days iâm just happy when itâs not a video
search.marginalia.nu is the search engine you want!
The search engine calculates a score that aggressively favors text-heavy websites, and punishes those that have too many modern web design features.
This is in a sense the opposite of what most major search engines do, they favor modern websites over old-looking ones. Most links you find here will be nearly impossible to find on a regular search engine, as they arenât sufficiently search engine optimized.
âIt is a search engine, designed to help you find what you didnât even know you were looking for. If you search for âPlatoâ, you might for example end up at the Canterbury Tales. Go looking for the Canterbury Tales, and you may stumble upon Neil Gaimanâs blog.
If you are looking for fact, this is almost certainly the wrong tool. If you are looking for serendipity, youâre on the right track. When was the last time you just stumbled onto something interesting, by the way?
I donât expect this will be the next âbigâ search engine. This is and will remain a niche tool for a niche audience.â
i clicked around for a few minutes searching various things and I now have two fourteenth century pie crust recipes and an apple filling recipe i want to try, so thanks!
it has been twenty minutes and I am deeply in love with this search engine.
INCREDIBLE. I *do* want to know how to test Windows 95 for Y2K Compliance and I am glad that someone is still hosting step by step instructions for that.
tl;dr: search.marginalia.nu for the old or old looking and just plain serendipitous stuff that google or Duck duck go are gonna not find/bury on the 20th page. For perfectly good reasons, but âŚ
My absolute favorite part of having made this post - other than causing people to be introduced to this site - are the people in the tags/comments talking about their interests and stuff they found about their hobbies.
