I made a thing. Happy pride đłď¸âđ
Alien: Resurrection (1997) dir. Jean-Pierre Jeunet
Finally bought some dye and have been having so much fun with optical color mixing. I decided to start with cmyk primaries to get some vibrant color options.
So far I've only mixed up the main batch of colors, but I'll split them up and create a palatte of tints and shades once I have access to a scale again.
I don't have any fancy tools and have been blending the fiber by hand, so it's probably best I have a forced break for the sake of my fingers. Once I'm done I should have a very useful set of 57 2g swatches to play with! (Plus 5 more for a set of grayscale swatches)
If I'm still up for it, I might repeat the whole thing with my classic red, yellow, blue primary dye set. For a truly massive set of heather swatches.
I'll create a comprehensive guide to all the color mixes and my process once I'm done, but in the meantime here's a mixing guide for the colors I've already done!
The ratios are presented in the same order as the wool swatches in the photo above it. I didn't simplify any of the ratios so you'll have to deal with 2:2s instead of 1:1s, oops.
For anyone curious, I used brilliant yellow, deep magenta, and caribbean blue from Dharma dyes on their corriedale wool for my base colors.
Power flower flower of love

The mile-long rainbow flag being carried down First Avenue in New York City.
âFor New York City Pride in 1994 (Stonewall 25), Baker created a mile-long rainbow flag that was carried down First Avenue in Manhattan. During the parade, Baker used scissors to cut segments from the flag to be rushed to Fifth Avenue for an impromptu protest march in front of St. Patrickâs Cathedral, the headquarters of New York Cityâs anti-gay Catholic archdiocese.

typecasting sucks unless it's Charlize Theron playing an emotionally unstable woman in an action thriller in which case it fucking rules
Watercolour of a horse.
When I was a kid I had a book of like, "fun physics experiments for kids". And one of them was an "experiment" where you hold an object by a string and just by focusing on the direction you wanted it to swing, it would start to move in that direction even without your input. The book of course explained that this was the ideomotor effect, a phenomenon where your thoughts can create minute, unconscious movements in your body.
Then a couple years later I got a fortune-telling kit that included a pendulum. You hold the pendulum over a piece of paper that says "yes" and "no" and ask a question, and whichever way the pendulum moves is the answer.
At which point I was like "hey WAIT a minute", and in hindsight I think that experience explains most things about who I am as a person
Ummm she's literally sensitive :/

I could write a dissertation about this and instead only have time for a few paragraphs but. Looking back on Psych with more knowledge about neurodiversity and how people feel about actually being around folks with neurodiversity-related traitsâŚ
I have a LOT of feelings about how Gus has so many of the autistic (and some ADHD) traits that people find annoying and grating and get pissed off about (correcting people, infodumping, dropping special interests into unrelated conversations, rigidity in folllowing rules, etc) and Shawn has so many of the ADHD (and some autistic) traits that people find annoying etc (physical and verbal hyperactivity, jumping between tasks and jobs and so forth, habitual lying, interrupting in conversation, etc), BUT
With each other they sort of⌠build their relationship around those things, instead of treating them as Problems. Gus corrects incorrect things and Shawn forgets correct things (or habitually lies or etc) so they build an entire recurring bit around the situation where those traits intersect (âIâve heard it both waysâ) that turns it from a source of conflict into a shared in-joke ritual. When Shawn starts up one of his elaborate lies Gus immediately swings into commit to the bit back-up mode. Shawn treats Gusâs infodumping as a social strategy.
They balance each othersâ extremes without genuinely resenting each other for needing that. Gus is overly rigid about rule-following, Shawn is overly impulsive about rule-breaking, and they pull each other towards a more sustainable middle ground. Gus is overly fond of routine and risks stagnation, Shawn is overly prone to starting and then abandoning things, between them theyâre able to form a life thatâs interesting and includes novelty but isnât unlivably chaotic. (We see what happens with that one when theyâre not together to balance each other out! During the time they were apart, Shawn had a jillion jobs and quit all of them, while Gus became a dead-eyed pharmaceutical salesman with zero, like, Upward Mobility.)
And then of course there are the traits they share! They both clearly have echolalia and a drive to stim, for instance, and instead of policing each other they just periodically break into random dances and vocal exercises and âsingingâ and general sensory-seeking nonsense together, matched to each other.
I just??? The fact that they visibly display all those autistic and ADHD traits that drive other people crazy but instead of being a wedge between them thatâs exactly why theyâre perfect for each other⌠and how itâs not that it doesnât ever cause them annoyance because theyâre just like naturally soulmates who never get annoyed by anything about each other, but that theyâve worked out rituals and strategies so that what maybe bothered them in the past now instead is a shared bonding activity, or acts to balance their weaknesses against each otherâŚ
Just. Got Dam, thatâs the dream
real talk I think steampunk is kinda neat like sorta neat you'know like as a little touch of spice to a setting that shouldn't normally have that kinda stuff. like a robot arm here a gun there some contraptions elsewheres. like skies of arcadia levels of steampunk is pretty much ideal. but y'see ultimately I'm pro-steampunk as a concept. but real talk for a second if your setting has a place called "the clockwork [location or concept]" I'm gonna beat you to death with hammers.
Sounds like someone's just salty theyre stuck in my clockwork labyrinth again
I know you're laughing at me I can hear the sprockets on your brown tophat jingling and once I find my way out of here you're fucking toast dude

Things I enjoy having opted out of as someone more-or-less woman-shaped and woman-perceived but largely gender-agnostic:
Makeup. I wear it for weddings or special occasions but don't have to devote any time to it in the mornings anymore. My face is fine.
Shaving my legs. Do I occasionally miss the dolphin smooth feel? Yes. Do I miss doing naked shower yoga with a razor? FUCK no.
Cup bras. Underwire, impossible back clasps, changing cup sizes--- fuck it. Sports bras every day for the last 6 years.
Women's pants. Wearing men's jeans and having pockets I can actually put shit in has been a game-changer.
High heels at weddings. Did you know men's dress shoes are COMFORTABLE??? FUCKING BULLSHIT RIGHT THERE.
