Collins is gone.
Namaygoosisagagun First Nation/Collins has burned to the ground. The entire community is nothing but ashes after being quickly consumed by wildfires. They did not have any support from emergency services, and no one offered aid. The community saved themselves by escaping into boats because no one came.
Mishkeegogamang and Cat Lake have lost power. Families are ending up in shelters with nothing. Armstrong, Lac La Croix, Whitesand, Gull Bay, Lac des Mille Lacs are currently in the fires path and all members are being evacuated.
All this loss, all this devastation, and it was entirely preventable.
After steadily underfunding wildland firefighting and purposefully excluding Indigenous wildland firefighters and Indigenous wildfire organizations from wildfire operations, firefighter training, decisionmaking, and resource exchanges, in 2025, Doug Ford slashed the forest firefighting budget.
It's hard to ignore his decision to cut funding and leave us out of adequate fire training (even though we've lived with forest fires for thousands of years—far longer than settlers have been in Canada—and made sure fires like the ones we're all seeing today were prevented through kinisitotēn) when, despite making up less than 5% of the population, we account for 42% percent of all wildfire evacuations in Canada.
And when we are successfully evacuated, we face discrimination and racism—like Kashechewan—because it's always been easier to blame us than it is to blame the true culprit: denialism, corportate greed, and colonization.
The people of Collins and every other impacted community deserve better.
Right now, the AFN is currently accepting donations to help Collins First Nation. If you're able to, please consider donating.
ONWA (Ontario Native Women's Association) is another great place to donate to. They have outreach vans going to motels and inns and offering food, water, resources, and cultural support to those impacted by the wildfires.
Other places to consider donating to are Mikinakoos Emergency Fund, Red Cross, True North Aid, Indigenous Climate Action. You can also send donations directly to Whitesand First Nation via e-transfer ([email protected]) and they request that you add your full name in the e-transfer comment section to receive a tax receipt.
*Before sending money, verify that the appeal appears on an official First Nation, Tribal Council or registered charity channel.

Finding the 1980s classic The A-Team available for download the other day has got me in a sharing mood, so if you're interested in checking out the first fandom I wrote m/m romance for over 20 years ago (christ on a bike), the first season is available for download here and the second season should be uploaded in the next couple of hours. After that, I'll have to rotate through the other seasons but I'll reblog when I have 3/4 up (and 5 if I can get it in).
What is the A-Team? Well, there's a thorough breakdown of the premise and main characters here if you like, but long story short there was a spate of one-hour action shows in the mid-Eighties that tried to make the American Vietnam War vet into a hero. Yeah, I know. If you can get past that (and fair play if you can't), this one always struck me a little differently.
When I was watching it in its original run at fourteen (and perving over George Peppard), I didn't pick up on just how much the show was aware of its own OTT-ness. In a lot of ways, it's a cartoon - but everyone involved knew it was a cartoon, and played to that in a hundred different ways. There were a lot of jokes and laughs and nods and winks. As an example, here's George in drag showing the baddies who's the boss ass bitch:
Not only that, it was surprisingly anti-establishment and left-wing for an American action show during the Reagan years. The enemies weren't 'street scum' as was standard at that time, but evil capitalists and rednecks. In one ep, for example, the Team goes to the aid of protesting migrant farm workers by robbing the rich landowner's banquet, pelting his minions with cabbages, and helping the workers all over the valley organize a union. The show was utterly ridiculous, but it wasn't without merit, and it was definitely smarter than it looked on the surface.
And then there are these two. Templeton "Faceman" Peck (Dirk Benedict) and HM "Howlin' Mad" Murdock (Dwight Schultz). The stars of the show were definitely Peppard and Mr. T, but as the show went on and it became clear they hated one another's guts, the writing featured Face and Murdock more than I think it would have otherwise. This worked out well for some fans, because these two had chemistry up the wazoo. When I first watched it, I couldn't quite figure out why I loved watching them so much, but when I stumbled across some fic nearly 20 years later, I finally got it. And then I wrote some of my own.
(Oh, and if you're a fan of whump, these two will not disappoint. They even recycled a particularly whump-filled Starsky & Hutch episode to give them an opportunity to angst over each other).

Several wildfires are forcing members of a number of First Nations to flee their homes in northern Ontario.
“I had time to run home and pack a bag and get to the beach where the boats were waiting,” said a member of Namaygoosisagagun First Nation (Collins). “We literally had minutes to get on the boats and flee before it took our town. “Once we left my house finally after packing what I could in a pack sack, the fire was right behind our place. We had to run to the beach and once we got there, it was only moments before the fire had jumped over the (train) track and was coming for us.”

I used to use Google docs, but the white mode only was really annoying me (tires my eyes), so I swapped to Ellipsus (which I genuinely love and recommend), but it was bothering me a bit that I need wifi in order to use it, so now I switched to LibreOffice Writer, which I do like.
It very much has a Microsoft Word feel, but is open source and you need no accounts to use it. It's local on your device, so no AI can scan it, and no wifi is needed.
I still wish it had the Google Docs cards, because, bitch, that thing is so good for easy organizing.
