"he's a lot of boy" is permanently seared in my brain
So recently I went camping with my sister and I had a Linguistic expirience.
We were in Yellowstone being excited about geothermal features and generally enjoying ourselves becuae turns out Late September is the best time to hit up the Colder national parks- the only other people there was a family with matching windbreakers speaking german with Swiss accents and the Park Ranger patrolling around to make sure we werenât planning on skinny dipping or the other bonehaded things tourists do.
As weâre on the way back to the car we see a woman in Bright Red Pants in the parking lot looking both lost and near tears. She sees us and practically sprints over to ask us
âParlez-vous français?â
Now, my sister is fluent in spanish, ok at pourtugese and italian and even has a good chunk of Japanese under her belt.  âyo hablo espaĂąol!â She offers. Then offers the other three languages. Madame Red pants shakes her head at all of them.
I have a dubious grasp of English, but I know enough German to navigate a major metropolitan area if everyone is real patient and repeats things three times for me. âSprechen Sie Deustch?â I try.
Madame Red Pants (I can see her husband in the car looking equally bewildered. I cannot see the color of his pants. I assume they are equally Rhodacious.) looks crestfallen but tries anyway. She takes out the park map and indicates the Norris Junction, while speaking French faster than I understand English, but itâs apparent she doesnât know where she is currently, and needs to get to Norris Junction.
We know where she is and how to get to Norris but canât convey this via pointing at the map and waving our arms. I feel genuinely bad, and she looks near tears with frustration.Â
Then I remember. The matching Swiss Family.
I jog back into the geyser complex and find them excitedly taking pictures of a chipmunk while the Ranger watches them suspiciously from behind a pine tree. Â
âSprechen Sie FranzĂśsisch?â I ask, and they collectively turn towards me, freeing the chipmunk from thier gaze as it sprints off into the underbrush.
âJa, bitte.â Says thier Matriarch and leader.
âEine Frau is Veeeeerlos- no, Verloren! Kann Sie- aw crap whatâs the word? Translate?â
âOh, Ja!â Frau Windbreaker speaks Idiot Tourist too, apparently. The Swiss collective follows me back to the parking lot and and Frau Windbreaker and Madame Red Pants have a very animated conversation in French that I understand exactly none of. My sister, feeling left out, offers various memebers of the Swiss Collective trail mix. some of them even take it. Frau Windbreaker turns to me.
âWo ist Norris?â She asks, looking mildly embarassed.
I end up having to convey the directions to Norris in German, which Frau Windbreaker translates to French, hindered slightly by the fact that neither of these women know how to read a map, but eventually Madame Red Pants comprehends, thanks us profusely, gets in her car, and manages to turn the correct direction out of the parking lot. Frau Windbreaker and I shake hands and all of us part ways with the feeling of a job well done.
Before my sister and I can get in the car, the Ranger appraoches us.
âThanks for that. Iâve felt bad all summer that all Iâve been able to do is turn on google translate for people.â he said, shyly.
At that moment my sister and I both realized that Madme Red Pants had both a GPS in her car and an Android phone in her hand.
Hopefully the next person to help her was more technologically literate or generally observant than we are.
Now THAT is how you tell a story! I cackled like a gremlin at the end. well done.
i think its gross and bad and inexcusable that the cdc says you can end quarantine after day 5 of covid. omicron infections last 8-10 days on average. day 4-5 is the peak. it's just fully not okay for covid-positive people to be wandering around and working and infecting others. im not blaming the people who don't have a choice but to follow it. i don't want you to get fired. this one is on your employers and on the cdc for giving shitty ass guidance that is not based in science but rather based on the fact that last winter's covid wave was so severe that they were worried that if we let people quarantine until they tested negative that we wouldn't have enough of a workforce to run society. regardless of the validity of that we are not at that point right now.
otherwise reasonable people are following this guidance and it's really upsetting to see. people close to me have gone to coffee with their friends or voluntarily back to work while actively covid-positive because they diligently looked up the cdc guidance and that's what it said.
im just so fucking tired.
she asked me if i believed in god and i told her that when i was four i almost drowned in a public pool and in my panic mistook a stranger for my father. i clawed my way up his leg. four years later heâd send my parents a picture of the scars alongside a tin of cookies. he said, âi hope sheâs still okay. i carry her with me. it isnât every day you save a life. it isnât every day you feel like you were here for a reason. when it does happen, you have to cherish that memory. for once, i had a purpose. just being there was enough. she tore me open but she taught me a lot about love.â
Having rewatched Pirates of the Carribean several times, I have noticed something interesting. Will Turner is often the only survivor of massive shipwrecks, like the one that killed his mother or the one with the kraken. Other times even when hes alone he survives drowning in ways he really has no right to, like the destruction of the Interceptor. He just often conveniently finds a perfect sized piece of driftwood or something. Remember what Calypso said? About him having a âtouch of destiny?â I think that the sea could never kill him, will always cradle him and protect him, because all along he was destined to be the captain of the Flying Dutchman. The sea could no more kill him than a human could cut off their own arm.
#gonna mentally pair this with that post about how elizabeth heralds death #every man she kisses shortly afterwards dies at sea #and she sees the ghostly black pearl as a girl when no one else does #and at the start of the story elizabeth - the sea's own psychopomp - sees will floating past and sounds the alarm to save him #and she falls in love with the one man the sea will never kill (@aetherseaâ)

Vampires when they sip on your blood and catch extra strength Tylenol, at least two psychiatric meds, two cups of coffee, weed, and microplasticsÂ
Okay, so âDusk Glowâ has been in the Sims 4 since I started playing it:
But I was playing the new werewolves expansion last night and noticed a Dusk Glow 2 and Dusk Glow 3 that I hadnât seen before. Iâm assuming they came with the werewolf pack?? But itâs possible that I just never noticed them before.Â
You can identify a fake redneck by their passionate support of âblue lives matter.â Real rednecks have been in at least one physical fight and/or high-speed chase with police officers and would do it again
âredneckâ is a valid culture, not a euphemism for âbigotâ
So this has probably already been said on this post but I dont wanna scroll through 66k notes to find it.
The term Redneck gain prominence with striking coal miners in Appalachia. They wore red bandanas around their necks to express union solidarity.
And they fucking FOUGHT police and Pinkerton strike breaker forces. It was a period called The Coal Wars.
The poor and working classes have a long history of community support and rejecting police authority.
If youâre pro-cop, youâre not a redneck, youâre a bootlicker who based your personality on a played out Jeff Foxworthy caricature. Get bent. Your ancestors are ashamed of you.
If you can, please donate to the Internet archive, links in the description. The loss of the archive would be devastating for dozens of reasons.
I know the Library of Alexandria comment sounds like an exaggeration. It absolutely is not. As of May 7, 2022, the Internet Archive holds over 35 million books and texts, 7.9 million movies, videos and TV shows, 842 thousand software programs, 14 million audio files, 4 million images, 2.4 million TV clips, 237 thousand concerts, and over 682 billion web pages in the Wayback Machine. Itâs been operating since 1996, the loss of knowledge would be impossible to ever completely come back from.
The lawsuit from Hachette Book Group, HarperCollins, John Wiley Sons, and Penguin Random House alleges there have been significant revenue losses because of their controlled digital lending program. For context, most libraries in the US also use CDL to distribute books to their patrons wherever they are but those programs are run through for profit companies and the libraries are often paying a very high fee to so their patrons can have access to digital books. The Internet Archiveâs program is completely free but they have a policy of not digitizing and lending anything less than 5 years old.
The lawsuit goes on to note that authors often own larger shares of their revenue of digital vs. print copies of their books. So the publishing companies, seeing that theyâre underpaying their authors, are essentially blaming a library for being free instead of bumping up what authors earn on print copies. The Internet Archiveâs 5 year policy is designed to protect authors anyway as thatâs when books typically make the most money.
Hey by the way The Internet Archive is also one of the most cited places on Wikipedia. If it goes down a good chunk of Wikipedia will go back to âcitation neededâ or citations will lead to dead links.

Heroes of our times: this woman who stopped shaving, plucking, moisturizing, fixing her hair and applying make-up because her douche boyfriend kept complaining she spent too much time in the bathroom and YOU WONâT BELIEVE WHAT HAPPENED NEXT.
[Spoiler: he learned women donât actually âlook like thatâ and tried to force her to âtake care of herselfâ again, while she realized she was wasting so. much. time. and is now living her best hairy, unplucked, unmoisturized, unblow-dried and unlipsticked life. Truly a blessèd day.]
For once the you wonât believe what happened next line was actually correct. Kinda nice to see people willing to learn and grow.
