Jason, exhausted and ready for the weekend, is on his way back to the dormitories from practice, freshly showered and wet-haired, when someone stops him in the middle of the campus garden grounds.
Heβs not in the mood for it and is almost about to raise a hand to politely motion for them to not bother him, but the guyβs already spoken before heβs got a chance to.
βAre you a varsity?β says the guy in a red hoodie, then offers a small microphone in between his fingers for him to speak into. Another guy in a blue GSU shirt holds up a smartphone to record the interaction.
βYes. Javelin,β says Jason impatiently, hiking the strap of his duffel bag further up his shoulder. He thinks about all the things he still has to do with the little time he has left that this little interview is taking up.
βAnd what year are you in?β
βIβm a senior,β Jason answers into the microphone, hoping this interaction isnβt going to that much of a waste of time.Β
βIβm Hank, this is Don and weβre sophomores. And weβre just messing around for social media. Trying to get some views,β

The phone rings for a few seconds before someone picks up.
βHi, Clark, is dad there?β
Some shuffling about is heard from the other end.
βMhmm?β says another voice.
βItβs Jason,β says the man named Clark.
βWhat is it?β says the other voice, Bruce, with some urgency, coming closer to the phone. βWhat happened?β
βHey, Bruce. Was just calling to say I love you,β
βWhat happened!β Bruce presses, clearly concerned and worried.
βNothing happened!β Jason insists, chuckling. βI just wanted to say I love you,β
The cameraman, Don, and the dude with the mic, Hank, are trying their best to keep it together.
βOkay, did you get arrested?β the tone is accusatory.
This time, Jason, too, is laughing. βNo,β
βYou are. You got arrested. For what? Iβm going to take that bail out of your allowance, mister,β
βNo! I didnβt get arrested,β Jason cackles. βI was just calling to say I love you!β
βAnd what else?β says Bruce, clearly distrustful of the call. For a moment his voice becomes farther away from the phone. βClark, call Gordon and ask if Jason got arrested,β
βLetβs not jump to conclusions, Bruce,β says Clark, far from the phone but still audible.
βNothing! I didnβt get arrested! Just, I love you, and that the pudding Alfred sent the other day was amazing,β
βAm I going to see you on the news? Is Clark going to have to embarrass himself writing about you on the paper for tomorrow?β
Jasonβs laugh half-overwhelms the microphone recording him and his phone call. βNo, no, I promise. Iβll be home tomorrow,β itβs almost as if Jason can see Bruce narrowing his eyes at him.
βYou never call to just say I love you. You just call me when you need something,β
βOh, well now Iβm calling to say I love you, and that I should call and come home more often,β
βWhatβs going on? Did you crash your car? Are you hurt? In the hospital? Iβll know if you lie. Clark, call Tommy! And Harvey!β
βBruce, Iβm not going to call Gordon and Harvey. Or Elliot,β
βPlease donβt call Mr. Gordon and Mr. Harvey. Or Dr. Elliot. Nothing happened; I didnβt get arrested, my car is in one piece, and Iβm not in the hospital. I promise,β
βThen whatβs wrong?β
βNothing! Nothing is wrong,β Jason pauses for a bit and bites his lip. βI love you,β

Jason raises a brow. βWhat about Clark?β
βYou donβt love Clark? He raised your barely home ass,β
This time, Don laughs into his arm and Hank moves away from Jason so the microphone and phone won't catch their laughter.
Jason shakes his head with exasperation but relents. βLove you, Clark,β
A boisterous, booming laugh comes from the speakers. βAww, love you, too, bud!β
βAlright, Iβll tell Alfred you liked that last pudding. Donβt forget to bring back his Tupperware,β
Jasonβs dad hangs up and the phone gets shoved back into the duffel bag.
βYour dadβs pretty cool,β says Hank, grinning at him, and Don offers him a fist bump that he returns with barely contained enthusiasm.
