entomologists are the most fucking wild people ive ever met
i pointed out a cool wasp to one and she just picked it up with her bare hands and started showing me different features she was using to identify the species
on a walk with another one he just paused, turned, violently shoved his hand into some rotting wood and offered me a tunnel web spider like oh okay i guess-
Why would you NOT be patient with overworked staff. Is there any interaction more honest and rewarding than seeing someone obviously overwhelmed and telling them "y'all look super busy, don't worry about serving me fast, take your time" and watching them drop the customer service act for a sec to be like "yeah it is nuts today, you have no idea", like babe I've BEEN there, anyone in here gives you shit u know I gochu
bro not to start again on names but u ever think abt how some names have been used for centuries, millenniums even…like how many times has the earth heard a mother calling, ‘alexander!’…how many times have the stars caught a lover whispering, ‘freyja’…how many times has the ground we’ve walked on and continue to walk on felt vibrations of a friend excitedly yelling, ‘mary!’
#names are so amazing because everyone’s name is *theirs* but that name has been used thousands of times by so many people but right then and #there it is *their* name #and theirs alone [@flower-borne]
+
#how beautiful is it that we did our best to find the loveliest sounds the human voice can make #and assigned those sounds to one another #so that our whole identity is inexplicably linked to something made with love in mind [@honeytuesday]
+
#how ppl are named after family members; or after the things we love and that inspire us (hope; faith; not to mention all the non-english #names with meanings of beauty and kindness and intelligence; also how a lot of names have biblical or otherwise religious origin); how names #translate over countries and languages (mary/marie/maria/etc); how some don’t translate as well bc of linguistic differences (julia/yulia) [@maryolive]
+
#how names hold stories and history and how one name is enough to bring back memories! #how parents fondly choose a name because of the meaning and wish their child carries the legacy of the name forward #how we have silly nicknames for each other and it’s like here’s a part of you given to you from my side and now it’s ours #the name of your enemy is the name of my lover and both have spurned us so here we are grieving different people of same names [@ijaazat]
my favourite is historians i have met who have named a child after something they glanced at on a historical record once, because it was the first time they had heard the name - and hey they liked it
because it means in this world there is a little girl who is named for a woman long gone. and that woman will never know this, and this girl will never meet this woman. but they are connected by a few letters of handwriting in an old book and hundreds of years
me at any given time: can we just buckle down and focus on the task at hand please???

How is it is supposed to work: your emotions are a response to your situation and surroundings. It is OK to feel the emotion. Now take that emotion and use your logical brain to decide which parts of the emotion fit the facts of the situation and which do not and why, and how you're going to respond to said emotions (which is what tweet said, and what therapists say)
How people seem to interpret it: any emotional reaction is perfectly fine and I am not responsible for what I do out of emotion.

cust called today and said coworker got mulch all over his car when he loaded it and demanded that [store] pay to have the interior cleaned. later a different one refused to move to the side so we could drive the reach down the aisle because “i’m shopping here” and “i injured my back and i can’t walk. go find another way around.” like how the fuck did you manage to get over here if you “can’t walk” you entitled fuck. i hate m3n and r3tail

having to come to terms with the fact that love is not an everlasting performance in which you attempt to retain the attention of your significant other but rather a release of control and putting faith into them and trusting them to choose to stay with you no matter what you have to offer
to love and be loved is to rest
It is to exhale the breath you didn't realize you were holding....
“In 1986 Grandma was worried I wasn’t settling down. So I told her I was having a relationship—with a woman. “I am settling down, in my own way.” And the sunlight settled on the dust on the mantlepiece and the cat settled in Grandma’s lap and Grandma said there were two nurses boarding in her mother’s house in Yorkshire in 1916. And Grandma said she was in love with one of them. 70 years later, she still remembered waiting at the bottom of the boarding-house stairs to blush and smile hello at the funny, dark-eyed nurse she loved. Love between women? Unforgettable.”

“I have noticed that when all the lights are on, people tend to talk about what they are doing – their outer lives. Sitting round in candlelight or firelight, people start to talk about how they are feeling – their inner lives. They speak subjectively, they argue less, there are longer pauses. To sit alone without any electric light is curiously creative. I have my best ideas at dawn or at nightfall, but not if I switch on the lights – then I start thinking about projects, deadlines, demands, and the shadows and shapes of the house become objects, not suggestions, things that need to done, not a background to thought.”
