Famously private, the early years of Lady Glinda Uplandâs life and career are shrouded in rumor and speculation, innuendo and outuendo. She has notably refused to speak about her connection to the Wicked Witch of the West.
Nor is a directionless journalist, struggling to reconcile her unknown past with her ambitions as a writer. On the eve of Lady Glindaâs retirement, Nor receives an invitation summoning her to Pertha Hills, the seat of the Upland Arduenna family.
To hear the entire story.
To know the whole truth.

can you give directors commentary on one of your favorite sections of nesting box or provide insight of Elphabaâs perspective in any scene you like
yes of course :))
one of my favorite moments of elphaba perspective is actually in chapter two:
Dr. Thropp is here already, of course. Standing behind the podium, she wrings her hands together. âOh,â she says as Glinda approaches, instead of hello or hi or anything else a normal person would say. Instead of continuing with how are you? or gosh, this is a great turn out, she glances up and down at Glindaâs outfit. âYouâre not wearing scrubs.â
âI would never wear scrubs to hold a lecture,â Glinda hisses, suddenly self-conscious of her dress pants, the cream-colored blouse she ironed at 5 A.M. What, is it not buttoned high enough? Dr. Throppâs eyes, ticking down towards her neck, seem to confirm her worry. âI wonât change now, so stop gawking.â
glinda thinks elphaba is judging her for not buttoning her blouse up higher. elphaba is actually just checking her out and she's flustered bc glinda looks hot.
she is a loser.
(more director's commentary under the cut)
also fiyero is at the first lecture to ask elphaba out but she fucks off immediately and he never gets the chance. sucks to suck straw boy
i really enjoyed writing this sequence because it gave me a good bit of insight into both characters. elphaba tending towards rigidity, glinda tending to being delusional about everything just working out magically. but when they actually sit down and think of things TOGETHER it works out.
also the scene where biq-boq contaminates glinda's sterile field is based on something that really happened to my coworker, but instead of an intern it was actually the patient trying to be helpful and then she had to completely redo everything :( if something falls off a sterile field let it drop people!
hello!! any idea of when youâll post the next chapter of nesting box?
really been enjoying your takes on the different chapters :)
thank you! if you sent me an ask i will be replying it's just taking me a long time right now sadly :(
i hope i will be able to post next month. i'm very thankful for everyone being so patient and i realize that it's been a really long time but i have been so extensively rewriting things that i basically discarded like... 40k words and i am now just catching up to myself. it's been a very turbulent summer for a lot of reasons so yeah it's just taking a while

actors love to make their characters subtextually gay not just because theyâre a little gay themselves though that often is the case but rather because having a secret is like energy drink to acting, and being gay is the easiest most obvious secret. whenever youâre unsure of your characterâs motivations consider: maybe they are gay? see where that takes you. should be pretty far
I can't draw for shit but here's my @localgaysian Nesting Box fanart in the form of a song trying to get inside Chapter 17 Glinda's insane mind I love her + this fic a lot :)
people denying that gelphie's book kiss is strictly romantic are dumb for a lot of reasons. besides the obvious homophobia of "it says these two women kissed but it didn't specify on the lips" that no one would apply if it were two men or a man and a woman, it also ignores what elphaba's saying in that moment. because she's not just saying goodbye to glinda--she's asking her to hold out. elphaba knows she has to leave shiz and glinda behind and she doesn't know if or when she'll be able to go back, but she wants glinda to hold out for her. elphaba is willing to give up everything for the greater good, but she still wants glinda to wait for her and be there for her should she come home. it's incredibly romantic and i don't really think it makes sense for her to request that of someone she just considers friend
hey guysss so unfortunately the rumors are true and im leaving the narrative. Buttt the good news is my absence will create such a gaping hole in your lives that it will become a sort of presence itself, and so in a way it will kind of be like i never left! But i am. Leaving just to be clear.

âď¸directors commentary on your favorite chapter or scene youâve written for nesting box PLS! what are you most proud of? what did you have the most fun writing?
i love your writing i swear i can picture every scene you are so talented :)
hope youâre doing well!!
omg thx for the ask<3 i have been better but i am pulling through lol
my favorite chapter that i've written for nesting box is definitely the chapter where elphaba's father dies. i actually got Visions TM for this chapter while sitting at the breakfast table and especially the conflict between elphaba and nessa REALLY clicked into place and i was like ohhh. oh. this is going to be so difficult to write and then i immediately got up and began typing into my notes app.
putting this under a read more for the sake of the dash! cw: mental illness (ocd); ethical dilemmas in medicine
ideally, when i choose a chapter title there are multiple instances of that type of cognitive bias/heuristic in the chapter and this is definitely a chapter where the title concept pops up several times. just for context, omission bias is the belief that it's considered less harmful to do nothing than to do something, even if the outcome is the same. it's similar to both the trolley problem as well as the ethical principle of nonmaleficience in medicine ("first, do no harm").
so this applies, amongst other things, to glinda staying in her room while nessa & elphaba are fighting, glinda not allowing herself to make a move on elphaba (probably appropriate, let's be real), the dilemma of elphaba and nessa's conflict around frex's end of life care, and, of course, elphaba not managing to tell glinda she is moving across the country until her hand is forced.
one of the things i'm most proud of is probably elphaba's struggle with her feelings towards her father's impending death and especially her not-so-unconscious fear that she's somehow willed it into existence. dr. thropp has a touch of obsessive-compulsive disorder and this is a combination of magical thinking (having the irrational belief that unrelated events influence each other) and harm ocd (obsessions and compulsions centered around being a bad person and/or secretly wanting to hurt others or having hurt others and forgotten about it)
(by the way if you have any of these thoughts, ocd is very treatable but often goes undiagnosed for many years because people are so ashamed of their symptoms and don't know what it is. i would really encourage you to speak to a trusted healthcare professional about this.)
within the chapter, one of my favorite parts is glinda going into elphaba's apartment for the first time. i actually didn't actively make the choice to not have glinda go to elphaba's apartment at all before this but at some point i realized like... has she ever been there before? i like the idea that dr. thropp is just a very private person who doesn't invite others into her space lightly, and since glinda invited her over first she just always defaulted to going to glinda's. so not a choice per se on my part but i think it helped characterize elphaba in that sense and it ended up being congruent to my vision of her.
especially this passage was very fun to write:
Impossible, Glinda knows. A fine selection of science fiction, a bespectacled detective would declare, points to an inquisitive mind. Prodding at a spray or lotionâcitrus, obviously. Studying a faded grocery listâthe precision of the angles! A hand most controlled, nearly restrainedâ
And none of it would suffice. None of it would be adequate preparation for the reality of her: Elphaba in her own apartment, in a faded cardigan with her arms crossed tight over her waist, the fine construction of her face and the depth of her gaze.
which is based heavily on the inner monologue of the main character from shirley jackson's novel hangsaman and a bit of an inside joke between @blackseablacksky and i because we both love shirley jackson.
this was put in to foreshadow elphaba's septum piercing in the emerald city (really important foreshadowing!):
âAt least you can get your nose piercing,â Nessa mumbles. âNow that he canât disown you anymore.â
this also ended up being an important chapter because there's also the reveal for the reason why glinda changed her name in this canon:
When it was finally published, she looked for her name in that row of authors and realized that the corresponding author had mistyped it, so that Galinda Upland, MD candidate, had become Glinda Upland, MD candidate.
Without much fuss, sheâd discarded the a.
this was not something i knew about her going into writing the fic. i think originally it was supposed to be a medical school nickname or something.
A nurse in garish orange scrubsâprison scrubs, Glinda thinks disdainfully, a strange choice for the palliative wardâis typing rapidly at the nurseâs station, but she glances up and nods at Glinda while she walks by.
My condolences about the scrubs, Glinda almost says, but thatâs clearly inappropriate so she nods back.
the nurse in this scene is @perigrin aka liv aka the author of titanic au. she wanted a cameo and she did choose the scrub color. i warned her that glinda would judge her and she still agreed.
Glinda looks for a trace of Elphaba in his features, but there is nothing. Nessaâs nose and the line of her chin, perhaps. But nothing of Elphaba.
i fully believe that even in nesting box canon frex is not elphaba's biological father. is it chief diggs? i do not think so. don't ask me who he is lol. it won't become plot relevant (i think)
also nessa definitely asked elphaba a LOT of questions on that train ride back and elphaba was not amused.
thank you very much for the question and i hope you enjoyed my ramblings about this chapter of nesting box <333

Nesting box commentary about that scene where Elphaba comes to Glindaâs apartment with sorbet so Glinda can commiserate about her breakup. Thatâs one of my favorite scenes, and I especially want to know Elphabaâs thoughts during that scene and leading up to it!
ahhh thank you okay yes. let me pull it up
okay so poor elphaba. she's really been going through it in the lead-up to this because finding out your crush is into women in the exact same moment you also find out your crush is dating your ex is a rough time of it always and also glinda is the queen of mixed signals. also! elphaba decides to show up at glinda's with ice cream/sorbet and wine because in an earlier chapter (chapter 9 i think) glinda talks about being good friends with shenshen:
âThank you,â Glinda says. âAnyway, ShenShen is a dear friend of mineâice cream and wine after breakups, manicures, you know?â
so elphaba is like (little mental note) this is what glinda expects of a friend.
i also think elphaba is not quite comfortable enough to really make a move at this point which is why she doesn't. like, she doesn't know what happened between glinda and selma exactly. she doesn't know at this point how long she'll be at ozford, there's too much up in the air.
âIn a hysterical, irrational way,â Glinda specifies. âDonât take me too seriously.â
âI always take you seriously.â
nothing super smart to say about this but this is a recurring gelphie thing to me-- that elphaba takes glinda more seriously than glinda does herself, and that that's one of glinda's major character flaws that she doesn't take herself seriously in a lot of ways: her potential to do harm, her potential to do genuine good, and figuring out what the fuck SHE actually wants.
âMe?â Elphaba tucks the errant braid back, peers at Glinda over the rim of her wine glass. âWhat about me?â
âYour type.â Glinda smiles sweetly around her next spoonful of sorbet.
âI donât have one.â
this is a big fat lie. dr. thropp is a liar. she definitely does not know what to say without it sounding incredibly odd. i think her type Actually is women who are very confident and smart and who don't impose societal expectations on her but like. how would she say that?
also probably blonde dermatologists a little :/ sorry elphaba. putting you on blast.
Clear margins, distinct lines. And Glindaâsâwell, crush, she can admit that much, at leastâcan live in its own little box, undisturbed and safe.
boxes motif, obviously, but nesting box does seem to return to the idea of boundaries and spaces and homes often.
i also feel like this scene really hammers the recurring thing in where glinda is obsessed with permanence and whether the inclusion of elphaba in her life is permanent or not. i tried to really establish this relatively early on so that the ozford reveal would feel organic--the entire time they are together, before glinda has a concrete reason to suspect otherwise, she already senses somehow that this is transient. and then of course elphaba tells her at the end but she doesn't understand the significance of it, just like she doesn't understand what it means that elphaba would show up at her apartment with sorbet and a bottle of wine -- another example of "representativeness restraint" (the chapter title), which is when you miss a diagnosis because the presentation isn't typical.
