Researchers hope their report will change the way local and national governments invest in community services
I havenât seen this article posted anywhere outside of my immediate library-sphere so I wanted to shout about it - remember that supporting your local libraries is super duper punk rock đâ¤ď¸
I was at the coffeeshop in the village and someone asked me how my llamas are doing, and a woman overheard and told me that when she was a kid, her parents used to have a couple of llamas in their sheep farm, and every single sheep in their flock imprinted on one of the two llamas. Each sheep chose the best most charismatic llama according to mysterious sheep criteria, and never wavered in their ovine loyalty. Each of the two llamas was worshiped by a small sub-flock of devoted sheep who followed him everywhere like Jesusâs apostles and only left their field for transhumance when led by âtheirâ llama. The funniest thing is the way this woman overheard the word âllamaâ and immediately came to sit next to me to tell me this, like she had waited since childhood to share her bewilderment about the two religious congregations of sheep led by rival llama prophets in her family farm.
Iâd have trouble keeping that in myself.
i love how 100k of us feel the same need to tell everyone that she felt
Mario kept reminding me of someone and I couldnât figure out who until it suddenly hit me.
I canât believe Iâve been both a fan of Mario and Asterix for years and had never noticed the similarities before. Shame on me. xD
Thank you for putting in image what Iâve been thinking for years
im so done with seeing articles about kids and screen time that doesnt mention parent behaviors even once. âkids are always on their phonesâ so are the parents! which the kids look to for how they should behave! ipad babies didnât chose to only play on their ipads, thats what their parents gave them!
an anecdotal example: when i was a kid, all my parents would do in their minimal free time was watch tv and then they would be surprised when in my sister and iâs minimal free time we would also only watch tv/play video games. they scolded us for not reading books, but they never read books. they scolded us for not going outside but they never went outside.
âkids are always on their damn phonesâ my mom is in her 60s and opens up candy crush anytime sheâs sitting â it isnt just the kids
I'm 41. When I get together with my mother I try to be present, engaged and involved. Meanwhile I have to beg her to fucking put her phone down and stop scrolling through Facebook.
I went out to lunch with my nephew, his wife, their baby, and my mom. All of them were on their phone (my nephew was letting the baby watch his phone) while I was trying to start conversations.
My neighbor's daughter came over so I could teach her to sew, I told her 'I'm fine with you checking your phone when you get a message but when we're working I'd like it if you focus on what we're doing so you can learn and don't hurt yourself.'
Know what she did? Told her friends she was going to be busy for the next hour and stayed off her phone. Even with one of her friends being an emotionally abusive dick head (He kept demanding she answer all his messages within seconds and was pulling crap like 'You're ignoring me because you don't like me anymore' NO DUDE. SHE WAS BUSY. That is 100% emotionally abusive!) she talked to me about it and I encouraged her to stand up for herself and warned her to watch out for that behavior. She ended up cutting him off a few weeks later and I'm proud of her.
The kids? THE KIDS ARE FINE. They'll learn to navigate this way better than current adults.

Fuck Around and Find Out
We have regular doors on either side of revolving doors because 492 people died at the Cocoanut Grove in 1942. We have radar for air traffic control and the Federal Aviation Administration because two planes collided over the Grand Canyon in 1956. Natural gas smells like that because it didnât before it blew up the New London school in 1937 and killed around 300 people. We have a LOT of fire safety rules because of the Triangle Shirtwaist factory fire. We have stronger cockpit doors because of 9/11 and stronger security for employees because of Pacific Southwest Flight 1771 and lighted aisles on planes because of Air Canada Flight 797.
I mean, thatâs just off the top of my head after getting home from working twelve hours overnight. Two hundred and twelve episodes of @disasterarea-podcast, and nearly all of them involved the disaster in question spawning new regulations or rules to prevent the same thing from happening again.
actually iâd like to point out: we have safety regulations because people PROTESTED AND FOUGHT AND STRUCK AND DEMONSTRATED AND RAISED HELL. it took the bereaved families of those who died in the triangle shirtwaist factory years of campaigning for the government to pass regulations about fire and door locks. it took open warfare--the government was sending in troops, dropping bombs-- for miners in appalachia to get basic safety regulations. it takes parent groups and boycots and unions fighting cops in the street. it takes marches on washington. it takes a lot of journalism.
the government does nothing for the silent dead, the humble dead, the polite dead. a dead body is shoveled into the ground and forgotten by the next business quarter.
safety regulations are not written in the blood of silent, disposable victims. theyâre written in the blood of those who split their knuckles and screamed their throats raw for a better world.
donât ever underestimate the value of protest.
I NEED MY GAY ROMCOM OUT OF THIS, STAT.

One of the most life-changing things I ever learned came from Mythbusters, where they tested and proved (with cognitive testing puzzles and reaction time tests) that lying down and resting with the intention to sleep STILL provided significant mental benefits over just staying awake, even if a person couldnât fall asleep in the amount of time they had.Â
It helps me to actually sleep to know that just lying down with my eyes closed is still doing me some good, and helps me to not freak out/beat myself up when I stay up later than intended. Any amount of rest is better than no rest!
So if you didnât know thatâŚnow you do
do you know that i think of this post every time i canât sleep op. what mythbusters did for you, you have done for a great many others.Â

shoutout to the guy who created a parody account of cinemasins where instead of pointing out every single flaw in a film, he just pointed out things he liked about the movie. you're so right cinemawins its so much more fun to like things
CinemaWins once said "Every movie, with very little exception, is someone's favorite, I like to find out why." and that sentence alone is worth more than every single thing the CinemaSins guys have ever created.
Meanwhile, in another Spider-Verse.... the cast of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (in theaters now), swap voice roles in this hilarious web exclusive.

âIrish doesnât have a word for please, you have to say if it be your willâ buddy do I have news for you about âpleaseâ
âIrish doesnât have a word for hello you have to use a shorthand religious blessingâ buddy do I have news for you about âgoodbyeâ!
âIn Polish the word for car is that which walks by itselfâ BUDDY what do you think an AUTOMOBILE is?
you have got to understand that your mother tongue is not the model of language. all your words have secret histories and layers of meaning just the same as other peopleâs words. the word you think of as just a word has etymology, it wasnât handed down from God as a finished word. English doesnât have a word for movie you have to either refer to the recording medium or use a short version of âmoving pictureâ, isnât that cute?
Okay, so, the French word for âpotatoâ is âpomme de terreâ, which literally means âapple of the earthâ, roughly.
One time, I was talking to my kid, and because I am Like This, I said âapples, or as the French call them, the potatoes of the treesâ. Haha. See what I did there?
Anyway, sometimes I tell this story to people, because I think itâs funny and witty. Twice so far, native French speakers have responded to this story with â⌠FUCKâ or words to that effect, because they did not know this. They simply had a sound that referred to potato, and had no semantic content past âpotatoâ. And then they said âpotatoes of the trees? what?â and then they thought about French and potatoes and they thought about apples, and about âpomme de terre of the treesâ and they actually heard the term âpomme de terreâ as adults who knew about apples and etmymologies, and they said âFUCKâ.
And I think thatâs absolutely beautiful.
Oh! I found a great one of these the other day!
So English has this word â gall â that originally meant bile, but because of the 4 humours theory of medicine, came to also mean, like⌠spite and irritability, and then migrated into meaning impudence, boldness, nerve. Itâs now found mostly in phrases like âI canât believe he had the gall to stand there and claimâŚâ
Unrelatedly, I was trying to find the Chinese names of acupuncture channels, cuz I wanted to trace their etymology (yes Iâm a language nerd donât @ me). So I happened to look up the gallbladder channel, which is čĺ, and that oneâs actually pretty straightforward:
č means guts, nerve, determination, courage
ĺ means âsackâ
So čĺ is âboldness bagâ
whereupon I â for the first time in my entire life â actually considered what the word gallbladder means.
đ
Anyway, both Chinese and English are in agreement that you have a little pear-shaped container tucked in under your liver thatâs where you keep your bravery. So if youâre ever feeling like youâre lacking in heroism and you donât know where to find someâŚ
⌠apparently itâs right here

this is by far my favorite safety/warning sign btw. they really went off with this one
No cuz I fucking love this sign. Itâs not an actual barrier so itâs not like some sort of challenge it simply says âfuck around and you will find outâ
Ohohoho I LOVE âfuck around and find outâ signs, especially the really dramatic and ominous (but true) ones
(Context for the last one: itâs a WWII era sign posted around the soldiersâ washroom mirror, warning them to never discuss military plans in places where civilians could hear them and report back to the enemy, e.g. in restaurants and pubs in the country. âLoose lips sink shipsâ.)
I also love these two, which I would place in the category of âYou already fucked around, now youâre about to find out.â
Aerated water is fucking scary. It's water that has a fuckton of gas in it, which reduces the buoyancy to the point where you will immediately start to sink if you fall in.
ive been collecting these recently and wanted to add some of my favorites
