The truth is that the ineffectiveness and harmful nature of intentional weight-loss is well known within the scientific and medical communities. If pressed, most doctors will affirm that their clinical experience conforms to the scientific results: Basically everyone who loses weight will go on to regain that weight within 3-5 years. In 75% of cases, they will regain more weight than they lost. 

This knowledge is why doctors became so desperate that they resorted to amputating parts of the digestive tract in the hopes that it might finally result in long-term weight-loss. Except oops, that doesn’t work either. Oh, and it causes death,  addiction, malnutrition, and suicide. Whoopsie daisy.

Blindly adhering to a regime of calorie restriction with literally no other consideration is bad. And this is something that is easy to walk into if you’re messing around the basics of a weight-watchers programs, or if you’re just reading the big number at the top of nutrition labels. While I have never had to seriously diet, I have very little way of commenting on whether or not the culture of the people invested in is bad, the concept of dieting is not bad. 

Weight loss is important for general long-term healthcare in the obese population group. And bariatric surgeries, like gastric bypass, are some of the safest and most effective treatments for morbid obesity. This is something that one of OP’s sources agrees with. 

In the study OP cites when they claim that bariatric surgeries lead to death, in the conclusion of that study it says “Bariatric surgery results in clinical improvement and resolution of the obesity-related co-morbid diseases.” It also says “There was a substantial excess of deaths owing to suicide and coronary heart disease.” Which are problems that the surgery would neither cause nor address. The ‘high mortality rate’ the study says is “likely a function of the initial comorbidites related to substantial obesity and the likelihood that the patients remain obese even after the substantial weight loss and have remaining comorbidities”. In the first LINE of that study it reads “ Bariatric surgery has emerged as the most effective treatment for class III obesity (body mass index, ≥40).” 

So first of all, saying that the surgery is only successful 50% of time, as stated by that study, is a gross over simplification of the results. 

Again, that specific type of surgery as it was evaluated at the time, didn’t see the exact long term effects that they wanted to see ie: weight loss back down to where they wanted to see it in 60 months. But the weight regain is something that you don’t want to see, but the study is saying that weight regain is 8% up from the bottom. That’s not 8% gain from where they were before they had their surgery, but after the surgery. What the results say is that the surgery isn’t a magic anti-obesity stick. Well I suppose it is in 50% of cases (obvious joke), in the others the gain back SOME weight, around 8%. An 8% weight gain even after the weight they loss, could be a significant amount and absolutely could put undo pressure on their heart. But the weight gain isn’t a fault of the surgery.
