These pescatarian birds are directly exposed to PFAS contamination due to the island's position near the St. Lawrence Seaway.
Over fifty years of data show a peak in PFAS (also known as "forever chemicals") content in seabird eggs in the 90s, followed by a decrease as regulations went into effect. The most recent findings show a 70% decrease of most common PFAS.
While continued vigilance a regulation is needed, this data indicates that regulations are working to reduce PFAS concentrations in marine ecosystems.
Yes!!!! I did a review of literature on PFASs in human drinking water about half a year ago, and there is a lot of really good progress! Please celebrate this, please don't let this solution be forgotten (at least so quickly) as the ozone layer or acid rain.
We are making genuine progress! Producers are dramatically altering how much they use PFAS and how much gets released in effluent, but also there's a lot better understanding of how to remove PFAS from the environment!
Environmental problems CAN BE SOLVED.

Ah dammit. I wanted Peridot to be shocked that Amethyst knows Garnet. But their relationship had already been mentioned.
Wait I'm saved! Garnet never introduced herself to Peridot!

A German regional court has ruled that Google is directly liable for the content of its AI search overviews. According to the court, previou
Letâs fucking go
This is HUGE.
1. The court holds Google responsible for statements made by its AI, considering them Google's statements (search engines have limited liability for results in their engine as they're the words of other sites/companies/people), meaning when their AI lies/hallucinates they're liable for the defamation/harm resulting from those statements.
2. Google's defense that customers are generally aware of the lack of reliability and are responsible for fact checking was dismissed. As the court pointed out, that would "significantly diminish" AI Search's stated purpose and it can't be distinguished from Google's business practices/statements as a search tool.
3. Studies have found about 91% of Google's everyday AI responses are accurate, leaving millions of searches per HOUR with potential liability for falsehoods. 56% of correct responses weren't supported by the sources the AI listed. Both of which mean Google is now liable for a LOT more AI "errors."
4. Google was held liable for 80% of court costs in this case and this precedent is expected to reverberate around the world. This is a massive shift from the 3rd-party search provider role Google has previously played and it comes right as they've tied ALL searches to their AI search.
TL;DR Google reeeeeally stepped in it this time.
Additional source and more details below. Absolutely thrilled to say that this is real. And yeah, it's huge.
For all the reasons above AND ALSO because this particular lawsuit is a defamation case
Privacy lawsuits are hard because most privacy laws are super super weak, and there's very rarely a lot of money or enforcement backing privacy laws for...twenty million reasons, really...
But defamation suits? Those have teeth.
(In large part because, at least in some countries and including in the US, defamation laws protect public figures the least - and "public figures" legally includes most if not all politicians, and a hell of a lot of other rich ppl too)

A German court has ruled that Google can be held directly liable for false claims made by its AI Overviews, a decision that could put a serious legal dent in the whole âthe AI made me do itâ defense. According to The Next Web, the Regional Court of Munich issued a temporary injunction after Googleâs AI Overviews wrongly tied two Munich publishers to scams, subscription traps, and dubious business practices. The court treated those AI-generated summaries as Googleâs own statements, not just ordinary search results pointing to third-party pages. That distinction matters. Search engines have traditionally had more protection because they index and link to other peopleâs content. AI Overviews changes the machinery. Google is not just showing the web anymore. It is summarizing it, rewriting it, and sometimes apparently hallucinating a tiny legal grenade into the results page... This is still a preliminary injunction, not a final ruling, and Google can appeal. But for publishers, brands, SEOs, and anyone watching AI search swallow the results page, the message is clear: if Google wants to be the answer engine, courts may start treating it like the publisher of those answers.

TL;DR Google reeeeeally stepped in it this time.
5. If the words are Google's, this solidifies the position of universities who demand that all answers from AI are fully cited. If all the in-line citations now have to be (Google, 2026), that's going to make it obvious when someone's trying to use Google as a source. There's still the difficulty with people who are academically dishonest by trying to pass off the AI writing as their own. 6. 91% accuracy is officially too low to use as a source of references, which means the AI can't be used as a source of references either. This makes it less legitimate for such purposes than Wikipedia of all places (Wikipedia might need date/time proof of when it was accessed for the reference to be valid, but at least it is possible to prove the link existed at a particular date and time). 7. This will help encourage the rollout of courses on how to avoid AI search for students who need academic accuracy, because it's statistically not good enough to use. 8. This strengthens the case intellectual property authors have against Google in the EU, as this is proof that an intellectual property transfer took place.
One aspect of early pokemon in the USA that doesn't get remembered much is that Mew existing at all was debated, even with Mew being mentioned in the cinnabar mansion and Mewtwo existing at all, there were plenty of Mew deniers that claimed there were only 150 pokemon. Yeah Mew kind of appeared in the intro to the anime but it was surrounded in a shimmering light that made it difficult to actually see, some assumed it was just Mewtwo glowing with power or something.
Mew didn't appear in any episodes, and was not included in the pokerap, we didn't see any merchandise of it for a while, even things that included every pokemon excluded Mew, hell, pretty sure the official pokemon guidebook's second edition is only justified because they updated it with Mew and the few Gen 2 pokemon that appeared in the pokemon movie. Literally Mew was basically treated like a pokemon cryptid like Pikablue and Doomsay until promotions for Pokemon the First Movie started appearing.
And that's why Mew is the only pokemon that ever really felt truly mythical to me, it didn't have a cool story event to retrieve it like some of the later pokemon got ( not that it matters since most of those events were never widely available to most players ) but it's mythology is the only one that kind of spilled over into the real world, and you can never really re-capture that in the modern world where internet spoils all the mystery and mythic pokemon are unceremoniously dumped in your lap over wi-fi.
The first rule of cable management is "out of sight, out of mind"
The second rule of cable management is that all true art is provocative. If zero people want to kill you over it, it's not good art.

Some cool news for today: someone uploaded the uncut English dub of Yu-Gi-Oh Duel Monsters to the Internet Archive!! They used to be all online, but got taken down, only 2 were avaliable for a while
Episodes 1-9 of the Uncut Yu-Gi-Oh Dub breifly produced by 4Kids Entertainment and distributed by FUNimation in the early 2000's.Episodes 1-
For those that don't know: This was an attempt by 4kids to make an uncensored, more accurate dub of the show, released directly on DVD, with most of the same cast of the older dub. They didn't sell very well, so there were only 9 episodes released, but we have these at least (i believe the episode 10 in the link is an fan edit)

I've been slowly going through my Peridot tag and decided that I've been too boring with her Human AU glasses so far. They aren't reminiscent of her visor enough. So I decided to look up glasses with a triangular frame and these ones caught my eye. I'll be giving them to tattoo artist Peri once she's got her life back in control. Well, them but in green.
I'm very excited to announce that I have finished chapter five of Not Everything is Permanent! :D Now, it is under 3K words which I hope won't be too disappointing considering the seven year hiatus. But I am also writing chapter six before I post anything just because I don't want to risk leaving for another several years without at least getting Amethyst and Peridot back to being on good terms.
I revised my outline for the fic. It's funny, I wanted to trim the fat and make it shorter than I had already planned. But with the short chapters I ended up with just as many planned as I did before. Welp.
I wrote out a very important scene and right now I'm trying to figure out where to put it exactly. It's in chapter six. But I don't know if it should be at the start or the end. Right now I'm leaning towards it being at the end of the chapter.
Amedot Week Day 1-Flowers
Amethyst spin-dashed through the door with style as she had become accustomed to.Â
You never know who might be watching.
As she did so she noticed something got stuck in her hair. She pulled it out and saw that it was a flower petal.Â
âThatâs weird,â she muttered as she examined it. Then she looked at the floor and saw a trail of them.
Just for the heck of it she decided to follow them. Eventually they led to the bathroom.
Or as itâs become, Peridotâs room.
Amethyst opened the door and saw a sight she would not soon forget.
Peridot leaning on the wall with a flower clutched in her teeth. She seemed like she had at one point looked flirtatious but apparently she had been in that pose for a long while so discomfort had started to colour her features.
She couldnât help it, Amethyst started to laugh. âMan Peri, what were you up to?â
âMmmI h-ve b-n w-ch-ing,â Peridot tried to reply but the flower in her teeth made it a bit difficult.
âPeridot, try taking the flower out of your mouth first,â Amethyst had a difficult time stopping her chuckles.
âR-t,â Peridot removed the flower from her teeth. Well, mostly, bits and pieces did get stuck to her fangs and her tongue. âAs I was saying, in my quest to find a new show to watch since Lapis, well, soured me on Camp Pining Hearts I have noticed a trend on the more romantic entertainment. For some reason humans create trails to their resting place to lure their mate. From what I understand the goal is to engage in an evening of fun.â
âAnd you decided to lure me so we can have an âevening of funâ like on TV?â Amethyst covered her rising smile, her mind went to places, some hilarious, others very tantalizing. You never knew with Peridot. âSo what do you think this âfunâ is?â
âThatâs the thing, Pearl always turns off the TV before I get to see.â
The giggles came back. âDoes she now? So whatâd you have in mind for us?â
âI always hear moaning start up right before the screen goes blankâŚâ
âYou do huh?â
âSo I think that theyâre performing a difficult task of some sortâŚâÂ
At this point Amethyst had to literally bite her tongue to not burst out laughing. Peridot tried and that was very endearing.
Or at least it was to Amethyst.
âWell, I guess it is kinda difficult, well, for some people,â Amethyst stated without thinking.
âSo you know what theyâre doing?â eagerness was all over Peridotâs face. âAmethyst! You have to tell me!â
âPearlâs would kill me,â Amethyst thought. She instead said, âhey, why donât you guess? And if youâre right Iâll tell you. Youâve watched enough CPH to have some idea of what people do for fun.â
Peridotâs expression wilted at the mention of her former favourite show, but she did regain some of her joy when she started to think about what sheâs seen in media and experienced during her time on Earth.
âPerhaps theyâre playing a difficult video game?â she speculated. âBut Iâve never seen a game console or a tablet⌠Or maybe theyâre playing Pretzelâd? Thatâs difficult and easy to hide under a bed.â
Amethyst chomped on her fist and hoped Peridot didnât think anything of it. âYou know what, thatâs pretty darn close. I think Iâll give this one to you.â
âClose isnât good enough,â Peridot protested. âI want to know exactly what they do!â She stomped her foot for emphasis.
âSorry bud, Pearl would never let it go if I told you,â Amethyst blushed. âBesides, thatâs something people do when theyâre really really close. Like, closer than us, even.â
âThen I will make it my goal for us to be that close,â sheer determination fueled Peridot.
But only momentarily as she realized what Amethyst had meant. Blue tinted her cheeks. âOh stars. But uh, only if you are comfortable with it.â
Amethyst shyly crossed her arms. âYeah, I think Iâd be okay with that.â
So it was decided.
The two of them would work towards becoming âmatesâ as Peridot called it.
I know it's more nuanced than this but I think having a hard policy of thinking anyone who genuinely hates one group of queer people for their identity might as well hate all of us and thus I should block any queerphobic queer person I see can do a lot to save you from believing anything exclusionists say.
"bomb that kills all-" "I just don't get bi women bringing their-" "pansexuality isn't a real thing-" "all lesbians-" "trans men really are the men of the-" "theyfabs-" "pfft aroace people are cringe-" "nonbinary people are actually all-" Instant block. Goodbye. Not listening. It's for both solidarity with your fellow queers AND to protect yourself, because once a person is convinced to hate one group for their immutable traits they can be convinced fairly easily to hate another too, and thus I do not trust them.
Just block these people the second they pop up, they aren't your allies and nothing they have to say is worth listening to.
These types will often try to guilt you into defaulting to their judgement by citing their own identities but that's bullshit. You can, should, and must completely ignore them. A bigot is a bigot, and if you wouldn't listen to a cishetperisex one then you shouldn't listen to a queer one either.
Only complaint about the eternia remaster so far is the font.
Why do remasters insist on using el cheapo mobile game UI instead of the classic pixel fonts of old
I occasionally go on Steam boards and I noticed that a lot of games that use a pixel font have people saying that they can't read it. I'm guessing bigger studios have decided to just always change the font to something that everybody can read. That being said, there's options that aren't so ugly.
I'm all for better accessibility but I just wish the chosen readable font wasn't so ugly and clashing with the rest of the design
I agree. A toggle would be best. I hope they give us a font toggle.
And maybe in the future pick a less cheap looking font.
