ok so, I approached my local library with a proposal to donate a mural as a way to A: build portfolio/gain practical experience and B: give back to a beloved public institution. The director was very enthusiastic about it and i've been working on it since the beginning of March. Come with me as I endeavor to paint what is in all honesty an excessive amount of birds
I wanted the birds to look like they were actually in the space so first thing after doing the draft was to do a lighting study
after that I covered the walls in letters in lieu of a projector/vr headset bc i have neither of those :) Then i take a picture of the section of wall and superimpose the lineart over top of it so I can pencil in the lines
et voila
and that was a whole week on it's own so next comes the paintin' >:)

this guy took me about 4 days to completely finish, all of those freakingk coverts were a bear to render

genuinely made me start questioning my sanity around day 3, it's half the size the of the goose, WHY did it take me 4 days to finish??
nothing but pain and suffering, i'm sure hope the next bird will be much easier and with FAR less barring :)

my chains are broken i am FREE. although i did have a great deal of fun with this, the barring on the wings itself took me like four days and i am READY to move on

the male and female ones are gonna be posted separately bc they're taking a lot longer lol but yea! super happy i was able to capture the iridescent green of the head, i found metallic green and blue paint at a craft store that really made his head POP. it looks better in person i promise
ALSO!! As this is the 10th one, BIG announcement. The end is in sight!!!!! I plan to finish within the next 3 weeks and there will be a small dedication ceremony/ unveiling happening at the library to commemorate its completion on the 16th of May. the 16th is looming in the distance so i'm trying to get thru these as quickly as i can so i can have as much time for the GBH as possible. i still need to do the names next to all of them so i've got about a week and a half to finish everything which is GREAT because i have adhd and nothing gets my ass in gear like a fuckin deadline, let me tell you
power couple that they are, here's bird number 12 and 13,
the Northern Cardinals, Cardinalis cardinalis
and NOW that they are complete, ITS GO TIME, in the next five days (library's closed for mother's day 😭😭) i need to have the GBH fully rendered, the names of the birds vectored, weeded, masked, applied to the wall, and then painted, plus additional cattails throughout. I may be able to get away with just getting the GBH done in time for the unveiling and then just have the names and cattails added later, but i'm gonna really try to get it all done in time. BUT, i have a plan. Part of why i take so long on these is because i really am just figuring it out as I do it lmao. there have been many a time where i am sitting on top of the ladder googling "how to paint birds" but I think if i take the time tomorro to do all that figuring out how to approach it beforehand, this will go a lot faster. I may also recruit some of my artist friends to help with the placing of the names... hrmm we'll see.
Anyways, shout out to the librarian who tracked down exactly the thing i needed so i could figure out where to place the highlights in my birds eyes, ur the real mvp

thank you to everyone who reached out or got excited about this project, it genuinely gave me the fuel i needed to keep going. In total, the 480+ total hrs it took me to cover this wall pales in comparison to how long its expected to spend on there, hopefully imparting a sense of beauty and love for the natural world to the next generation and here's hoping i'm only getting started with these.

Ok does anyone else remember this TV series from i think the early 2000s, could be 90s. There's a dude named i think Rick or Steve (idk why both of these names sound right but here we are) and it was like a travel show on PBS (?) And he was just super nice and showed us castles?

im having feelings about the uffington white horse again
so essentially there’s this cool horse drawn into the hills in england made out of chalk and it’s like 3,000 years old.
people carved trenches 3,000 years ago and filled them with chalk in the shape of a horse but what’s interesting is that if you fail to maintain the horse by adding new chalk regularly, it will disappear. for 3,000 years, we’ve been filling in chalk in this horse so it doesn’t disappear.
we’ll never know what the purpose of the horse was originally. we’ll never know if it had ritual or spiritual significance or if it was just art. but we do know that people maintained it then, and, even though the meaning of the horse has long been lost to time, we continue to maintain it now.
the people who made this horse are long dead, but they live through us still, don’t you think?

That’s an exaggeration. What was invented in the 16th century was mercantilism. Capitalism really dates for the beginning of the nineteenth century, with the rise of industry and cash crops over artisans and merchants. Vulture capitalism, with the notion that companies have no duties other than generating profit, is even younger.
Capitalism is only 200 years old and I have to say, they have not been an impressive 200 years
I think a lot of this comes from the fact that most people don’t know the formal definition of capitalism. We all know the word, we’ve all seen the jokes, but very few people bother to actually define it unless they’re talking about political theory and philosophy, so it’s easy to end up with the impression that Capitalism = Money Can Be Exchanged For Goods And Services.
Capitalism is the economic system where most of the means of production (i.e. everything people need to have to make the stuff that everyone wants) are owned by private individuals or corporations, who then hire people to provide the labor necessary to produce things, with the intent of selling the output at a profit. It’s the difference between “you’re a carpenter and you make a chair and you sell it” and “you’re Richard Q. Richington who owns a chair factory, and you pay people to sell the chairs you paid other people to make and then all the excess money goes back to you.” There have been Richard Q. Richingtons on and off throughout history, but that being the norm for every single industry is a pretty recent development.
An alarming amount of people seem to think capitalism = all trade, and I don’t think that’s a coincidence.
So one thing I am is wildly out of the loop on current shows, so today when a friend of mine was like "Omg have you seen the end of Amazing Digital Circus" my response was "I havent seen the beginning, what's that?" And my partner without looking up said "oh yeah, so ya know hasbin hotel? It's like that but with clowns." (My friend was like "it's so not but lol") but I was like "uhhh I've heard of hasbin hotel, uhhhh is that the one with the guy with the severe middle part who's super tall? I think he plays basketball?" And I knew I fucked up with both of them went "WILT???!?!?!"
So anyways, I know what hasbin hotel is now, and fosters home, and also amazing digital circus sort of lol

Ive had my wallet connected to my phone for years since its one less thing to forget, but my new phone doesnt really allow for that and also its been kindof a safety hazard a few times so I got a wallet and now I have both, but lord knows im gonna forget one so im thinking about getting a daily bag as my go to grab and go thing, but if imma do that im packing other things ive always wanted to carry like pain meds and bandaids so it cant be super small but I also dont want it too big and I dont want a cross body bag cuz sensory issues but also I cant do too thin a strap cuz joint issues
This is a bigger project than I thought. Does anyone have any recs?

Ok, so after playing 12 hours straight of Paralives I am in love. Lemme be clear, I just spent the last 12 hours in almost exclusively build mode, and there is so so much that they are doing right!!
Obviously there are bugs to work out, but really I only encountered bugs in live mode for the hour that I dipped my toes into actually playing with the people, and even then not too bad. My paras kept being uncomfortable from peeing and sleeping outside even though they were inside so idk what thats about but im sure with time they'll iron stuff out.
But yeah, all that being said, WOW. Even with limited items theres so much flexibility for what kind of house you wanna build. I said this before but honestly I might get back into streaming because of this, cuz im obsessed with this build mode and the flexibility it gives you
Is there a learning curve? For sure, but once you figure it out its so niceeeee
