So, here's a question for any rabbis or religious scholars that's obviously of utmost importance:
Could a pokemon be a member of a minyan?
According to Yeshiva, a deaf or mute person can be a member of a minyan, so the fact that most pokemon can't speak is irrelevant. There are numerous pokemon that display human level intelligence (or higher) throughout the series. Alakazam has an IQ of 5000 and perfect recall, Slowking has an intelligence "comparable to that of internationally recognized scientists", Metagross is a smart as a supercomputer, so at least some pokemon should have the intelligence and understanding needed to comprehend and participate in Jewish traditions (and if we take Mystery Dungeon and Pokopia as canon, all pokemon have a human level of intelligence). We'll assume they're all at least level 13 and properly instructed.
As a follow up, if a pokemon could be a member of a minyan, we also have to consider that several species consist of more than one individual. The aforementioned Metagross is a total of four beldums fused together, so would it count as four people for the purpose of a minyan? Or just one?
This is clearly a very urgent and important question, but I don't feel qualified enough to discuss Pokemon halacha. Reblogging for greater coverage.
I think that they couldnt be part of a minyan simply because they are not jewish and also not human.
there would be the same question about, say, a robot being part of a minyan. Presumably, the robot could understand the significance of what was happening, but it still would be able to complete the ten
Neither robots nor Pokémon have souls, and, as such, cannot be considered part of a minyan
regarding Pokémon that are made up of more than one individual, if they *could* be counted in a minyan, I think that as with did/osdd systems, halachically they would be counted as one person
#we know they don’t have souls because they can be revived after dying#humans don’t work that way
But they don't die,the faint. Completely different, and humans can be revived after fainting as well.
Since you mentioned a robot, there is a question on whether a Golem can join a Minyan. In the end the answer is no, IIRC. I would say the same likely holds for Pokémon, especially considering that, like prev said, they're not Jewish.
but then the question becomes... can a pokemon convert to judaism
Not to sound like a fuckin hippie but please for the love of god start noticing and appreciating the natural world around you. You don’t have to go hike the entire Appalachian trail or anything and I get that not everyone has access to the outdoors for various reasons, but just fucking … look around you when you’re outside. Notice the sky and the sun and the birds and creatures. Start caring about them. I’m begging you.
Look in gutters. Flip over rocks in a park. Get into birdwatching, even if it's just for pigeons and house sparrows, cuz you'll be surprised at how beautiful they are and how much else you'll see that you thought was just sparrows. Start identifying plants on the street. Plant a native flower in a public median. Stare into a pond or a puddle until something moves.
you now have THIS jewish superpower
but it comes with THIS side effect
is it still worth it?
absolutely yes!
this will suck but it's still worth it
hm probably not
the side effect makes it totally not worth it
based on this post

jewish-american heritage month display I helped put together at work, featuring my own shofar and menorah 💙
question: my dad sings the brachot and haneirot halalu for lighting the menorah in a tune that I've never heard anyone else use, and I've tried to do a cursory google search and couldn't find anything like it. my father says all he knows about it is that his father sang it in this way.
any ideas as to where I could look up an old jewish tune and maybe find out where it came from? maybe some kind of jewish melody library or something? or at least find someone else who knows it? it's a really beautiful melody and I'd love to find out more about it
silly me for making a post about this tune and not thinking to include an audio clip! here you go 🎶

You: what year is it in the Jewish calendar?
Me:
the image not loading for me makes this post even better
It’s kinda funny seeing people talking about things “ancient jews did” when like,,,Orthodox Jews still do that, we’ve been doing that, that’s kinda our whole thing
If it does not require the Temple and is not about stoning or exiling people, there is almost certainly a Jewish community somewhere that still does it.
this reminds me of when I went to the oxford museum of natural history in england and this case, containing mezuzot and tefillin:
was labeled "ancient near east amulets and divination charms"

nothing like hearing "is it on? are we live?" on nasa's artemis 2 broadcast before being cut off into silence
even nasa isn't immune to Not Knowing If Your Mic Is On
It's one little goat, Michael. What could it cost, two zuzim?
judaism as lord of the rings gifs
pesach
rosh hashanah
simchas torah
sefirah

lag baomer
tu bishvat
bonus: purim
I do think there's something poignant about Artemis II being launched Seder night, in the month that was the first month ever observed by Jews as a people, in the month where Hashem first pointed to the moon and said "הַחֹ֧דֶשׁ הַזֶּ֛ה לָכֶ֖ם רֹ֣אשׁ חֳדָשִׁ֑ים רִאשׁ֥וֹן הוּא֙ לָכֶ֔ם לְחׇדְשֵׁ֖י הַשָּׁנָֽה׃" - "This new moon shall be for you the head of the months, it shall be the first for you of the months of the year." I really hope it'll be successful and that the launch and return goes smoothly for the crewmembers.
has anyone posted this one yet for this year?

wait I'm having more pesach in middle earth thoughts
dwarves have incredibly beautiful intricate metal/jewelled seder plates that get passed down through families
the who knows one song but in elvish and maybe about eru ilúvatar?
shulchan arech is the longest part of any seder in the shire because it's finally time for the food
in rohan they use horsehair brushes to search for chametz instead of a feather
the almost-harmonizing sounds of many dwarven sederim echoing through the caverns of moria
because minas tirith faces east they developed a minhag to keep singing until the sun rises
